Chapter 110: A mysterious woman
The door burst open, and a group of nurses rushed in. They carefully lifted Lilianna onto a stretcher, moving with practiced urgency as Dylan trailed behind.
He followed them to the ER but was stopped at the doors as they wheeled her inside. Dylan stood there helplessly; his fists clenched at his sides. Sinking into a chair, Dylan dropped his head into his hands, his body trembling with fear and guilt.
Lilianna was pregnant after four years of her marriage, and Dylan dreaded the fact that she would miscarry. The thought was unbearable. What would he tell her husband? How could he face him?
“It’s my fault.” Dylan blamed himself. He shouldn’t have called her in the first place.
Justin hurried down the hallway, his expression tense with concern as he spotted Dylan slumped in a chair outside the ER. His usually composed boss looked completely undone, his face pale and his hands trembling slightly. He couldn’t understand what had happened to him.
“What’s going on?” Justin asked with concern.
Dylan lifted his head, his haunted eyes meeting Justin’s. “Lilianna… she is…” He took a shaky breath before recounting what had happened moments ago.
“She came here to help me,” he added with a sad tone, regretting for calling her. “But she is in trouble now. It’s all because of me. I’m responsible for her suffering.”
“You didn’t know she was pregnant,” Justin said reassuringly. “Don’t blame yourself. You couldn’t have known this would happen. What matters now is staying strong. Whatever the outcome, you need to be ready to face it and support her.”
Justin lowered himself into the chair beside Dylan, his own heart heavy as he thought of Lilianna’s condition. She had always been kind and selfless, and the thought of her and her baby being in danger was deeply unsettling.
“She is lucky. She got medical help immediately. That gives her and the baby the best chance. I believe they’ll both be fine.”
Dylan nodded faintly, but the worry etched into his features didn’t ease. Justin kept his eyes on him. He had something important to tell him. But seeing the state Dylan was in, he decided to hold back for now.
In the meantime, the doctor appeared and informed that Lilianna and the baby were alright. The confirmation brought Dylan a sense of peace.
“Thank you, doctor,” Dylan expressed his gratitude.
“The early stages of pregnancy are vulnerable,” the doctor said with a hint of caution. “You’ll need to be extra careful. Stress should be avoided at all costs.”
“I understand,” Dylan replied earnestly. “I’ll be more careful.”
“You can see her once she is taken to the ward.” The doctor gave him a reassuring smile before leaving.
Dylan sighed deeply as he sat back in the chair, the weight of the worry lifting from his shoulders. He didn’t know Justin was going to deliver disturbing information that would chase away his relief.
“There is something you need to know,” Justin started seriously. “The witness we’ve been searching for… he has been found dead.”
“What?” Dylan exclaimed in shock. “How did he die?”
“A car hit him,” Justin explained. “But that’s not the whole story. The cops discovered other injuries—chained marks on his wrists and ankles, bruises all over his body, and cigarette burns. He was tortured before he was killed.”
Justin pulled out his phone and brought up a photo, holding it out for Dylan to see. “His body was found near the mount road.”
Dylan snatched the phone and took a good look at the man. His eyes narrowed as he recognized him. It was the same man who had run in front of his car the previous day.
“I saw him on the mount road,” he blurted out.
“You saw him!” Justin asked, his own surprise evident.
Dylan nodded slowly, still staring at the photo. “Yes… He ran out of nowhere, right in front of my car,” he recounted, his tone distant. “I was about to hit him. He looked… frantic like he was running from something.”
He paused, frustration darkening his features. “If I’d realized who he was, I could have helped him. I could have stopped this.”
His grip on the phone tightened as regret gnawed at him. This man had been their key—the one person who could have explained why he gave a false statement years ago, the one who might have revealed the mastermind behind the conspiracy. Now that he was gone, it would be more challenging to find the real culprit.
Dylan clenched his jaw. He refused to let this setback stop him.

“Find out who tortured him and why,” he commanded. “I want answers.”
Justin nodded solemnly. Dylan’s gaze stayed fixed on the photo, his mind racing as he vowed to uncover the truth, no matter how deeply it was buried.

In a shadowy corner of the city, a sleek black sedan idled quietly by the side of the road. A man in a sharp black suit slipped into the passenger seat, his movements precise and deliberate. He handed a thick file to the woman seated in the back seat, her presence exuding an air of authority and control.
“The threat has been eliminated,” the man said in a steady yet grave tone. “There is no lead left.”
The woman, her face partially obscured by oversized black sunglasses and a sleek mask, took the file with a gloved hand. As she flipped through the pages, her eyes glinted with a cold, calculating light. Under the mask, her expression was concealed.
“Dylan won’t stop here,” she said calmly after some time. “If he uncovers the truth, the web of deceit we’ve woven over the years will unravel.”
“He won’t find out,” the man replied confidently.
She snapped the file shut and handed it back to him, her stiff posture relaxing. “Take me to Gianna. I want to speak with her.”
“As you wish.” The man gave a curt nod and gestured to the driver. The driver pulled away from the curb.
The woman sat silently, her gaze fixed out the window, her thoughts concealed behind her inscrutable mask.
