Chapter 112: I am already regretting it.
Lilianna was finally moved to the ward, her face pale but her smile bright and full of warmth. She looked up at Ava with a playful glint in her eyes. “Did I scare you?” she asked innocently.
Ava nodded. “Yes. And I am sorry. I was…”
“Lili…how are you feeling now?” Dylan barged into the room; his steps brisk with urgency. Both women turned to him, their conversation abruptly interrupted. Ignoring Ava completely, Dylan made a beeline for his sister, practically shoving Ava aside in his haste.
Ava stumbled slightly, her mouth dropping open in disbelief. Just a few minutes ago, he had been speaking with her so softly. She had even thought he had changed. But now, he treated her as though she didn’t exist. The sting of his indifference prickled her skin, and Ava couldn’t stop her frustration from bubbling over.
Grasping Lilianna’s hands, Dylan asked, “Do you feel okay? Are you comfortable? If there is anything wrong, I’ll call the doctor immediately.”
“Stop overreacting,” Lilianna whined. “I am fine. Ava is with me. She will take good care of me. You should go and rest.”
“No, Ava can’t stay here,” Dylan said immediately, catching Lilianna by surprise.
Ava was stunned too, but annoyance soon overpowered her. She silently clenched her fists.
Lilianna blinked in surprise. “What do you mean, she can’t stay?” She had been planning to use this opportunity to tell Ava about what she had learned from Dylan. She thought this would make Ava believe that Dylan wasn’t planning to hurt her father. But Dylan was inexplicably chasing Ava away.
Lilianna was annoyed.
Ava also wanted to ask the same question. She waited for his reply eagerly, her arms crossed, her sharp gaze fixed on Dylan.
“Because she is going to the office,” Dylan said sternly. “She has already taken enough leaves. No more skipping work.” He turned to Ava, meeting her gaze with an authoritative air. “Go to the office and attend important meetings in my place.”
Ava’s jaw slackened in disbelief. “What? You want me to attend the meetings in your place?” she blurted out with disbelief. She thought he had lost his mind.
Dylan stood straighter, his posture unyielding. “Yes…As the COO, you can attend the meetings in my absence. Go to the office right away and deal with the urgent matters. Justin will help you.”
Ava remained rooted in place, her mind reeling. The title of COO was a temporary designation Dylan had given her as a way to keep her tied to him when she tried to resign. She had never thought he’d take the role seriously, let alone entrust her with such significant responsibilities.
“What’s the matter?” Dylan pressed, arching an eyebrow as if annoyed. “Why are you still here?”
Ava snapped out of her daze. “I am leaving,” she muttered and left.
As she exited the ward, her mind churned with questions and doubts. “Why is he doing this?” she wondered.
She was in the COO’s position only for three months. She had never taken this position seriously. How could he be serious about it?
She shook her head in confusion, the weight of his unusual behavior pressing on her. “Do I have a choice?” She sighed as she walked out of the hospital.
Inside the ward…
Dylan’s eyes lingered on the door long after Ava had left, his thoughts briefly trailing after her. When he finally turned back to his sister, he was met with Lilianna’s sharp, inquisitive gaze.
“You sent her away deliberately,” she grumbled. “I wanted to talk to her. I was planning to tell her about the mysterious enemy. This was the perfect chance to make her understand that you’re not her enemy and that you’d never hurt her father. Why did you send her away? I thought you wanted my help.”
Dylan’s lips curved into a small, reassuring smile. Without answering her directly, he reached out and gently caressed her head. “You need to focus on yourself and the baby,” he said softly. “Stress isn’t good for you. Leave Ava to me.”
Lilianna’s frustration softened slightly at his tenderness, but her eyes remained wary. “What are you planning to do? You can’t keep avoiding the real issues.”
“I’ll handle it,” Dylan said firmly before shifting the conversation. “I’ll call Henry and ask him to come down as soon as possible. He should be here with you.”
“No, don’t tell him about this,” Lilianna pleaded, a flicker of restlessness clouding her gaze. “He is busy at the medical conference, and I don’t want to disturb him. He promised me he’d come once it’s over. Let’s just wait for him.”
“Alright,” he relented with a nod. “I won’t tell him anything. But you need to rest. I’ve already arranged for a nurse to help you with whatever you need.”
He smiled and stepped back, ready to leave. But Lilianna’s hand tightened around his, keeping him in place. He could see the storm of questions swirling in her eyes.

“You said someone was using you against Uncle Thomas,” she began. “I think you need to talk to Ava and explain everything to her. She might think you’re planning to hurt her father. You have to clear her doubts, Dylan.”
“You’re worrying too much,” he said, dismissing her concern with a faint smile. “Ava trusts me. Gianna’s lies can’t shake her faith in me.”
But Lilianna wasn’t convinced. “Don’t lie to me,” she hissed. “That night, when you called me, you were frantic. You needed my help, remember? You begged me to come down urgently. Why did you do that if everything was fine between you and Ava?”
Dylan was speechless. He had already regretted making that call. Now, knowing how vulnerable her condition was, he couldn’t possibly burden her with the full truth.
“Yes,” he admitted softly. “I needed your help. Ava and I had an argument that night—about Gianna. She was upset with me and… she threatened to leave. I panicked, and at that moment, I called you. But things are fine now.” He clasped her hands reassuringly. “We’ve sorted it all out.”
“Are you sure?” Lilianna was still skeptical.
“Yes,” he asserted, a small smile tugging at his lips. “While you were unconscious, I had a long talk with her. Whatever misunderstandings we had, we cleared them up. See, I even sent her to handle the company’s matters. She is the COO now.”
Lilianna nodded understandingly. She knew her brother better than anyone. If Dylan hadn’t fully trusted Ava, he would never have sent her to represent him in crucial company meetings. The realization eased the knot of worry in her chest, and her warm smile returned.
“That’s a relief. You should cherish her. Don’t upset her again, okay? Or else, you’ll regret it.”
Dylan looked down, a small, bitter smile tugging at the corners of his lips. ‘I am already regretting it,’ he thought.
When he looked up again, his expression was carefully composed. “Now, rest. I’ll come later.”
