Chapter 127: She didn’t like roses.
Dylan tightened his hold as if afraid she might slip away. His voice was soft, almost pleading. “I know I’ve hurt you in ways I can never take back.” Slowly, he turned her to face him, his hands cupping her. “I know it’s not easy, but you can try. Let’s try it together. Please…”
His thumb brushed away her tears, his heart pounding with the hope that she might, just this once, take a chance on him again.
Ava couldn’t look into his eyes. She was terrified that if she did, her resolve would shatter, that she might see the hope in his eyes and fall for it once more. She quickly pushed his hands away and hurried toward the bedroom.
But Dylan wasn’t going to let her go that easily. With a determined move, he caught her by the arm and stopped her.
“Let me go,” she managed, barely able to control her tears.
“No,” Dylan said firmly, his forehead resting on hers. “I know I did many wrong things. I hurt you so many times, and I wasn’t the husband you deserved. But I want to be that husband—someone who is loving and caring, who’ll do anything to make his wife happy.”
He brushed his thumbs against her cheeks, his lips seeking hers. But he restrained himself, not giving in to the urge to kiss her this time.
“Try me once,” he pleaded. “I swear, I won’t disappoint you. I lost you once, but I’m not going to let that happen again. This time, I’ll cherish you, Ava. I will.”
Ava’s body stiffened at his words, her mind racing to make sense of them. “What do you mean?” She looked up at him, her breath catching in her throat.
For a fleeting second, a wild thought crossed her mind—could it be that he had also been reborn? Had he returned with the same memories of the past? Her pulse quickened as she awaited his answer.
Dylan froze. A flicker of panic crossed his face. He couldn’t tell her the truth—how could he? The idea of admitting that he had been reborn, that he had carried the weight of his regrets into this second chance at life, felt absurd.
‘She would laugh at me,’ he thought.
“I mean – I won’t fail you this time. I’ll keep trying to improve myself in every step of my life,” he blurted out.
Ava chuckled sarcastically at her own thought. ‘If he had been reborn, he wouldn’t be standing here like this. He’d have already kicked me out.’
It didn’t matter whether he had reborn or not. Her heart was set. Her decision wasn’t going to change.
“I am tired, Dylan,” she hissed coldly. “I want to sleep.”
She turned around but paused and glanced back at him. “And don’t buy roses for me again. I don’t like them.”
With that, she disappeared into the room, leaving Dylan standing there, utterly speechless.
‘She didn’t like roses.’ How had he never known that?
The realization hit him like a blow. He thought he was trying, thought he was making progress, but in that moment, he realized just how much of her he still didn’t know.
Later that night…
Lydia sat on the edge of her bed, her fingers gripping the phone tightly as Erica’s frantic voice echoed through the line.
“Have you talked to Dylan? What is he saying?”
Lydia exhaled a deep sigh, her shoulders sagging with weariness. “He is not listening to me anymore. He is slipping out of my control. On top of that…” She grimaced, her lips pressing into a thin line in annoyance. “Lilianna is becoming even more daring. I underestimated how much she could influence him.”
On the other end of the call, Erica let out an exasperated groan. “I don’t care about your problems, Mom. I can’t live like this! Dylan has blocked all my credit cards and frozen my bank accounts. I need money—urgently!”
Lydia’s irritation flared. “More money?” she snapped. “I sent you five million last month, Erica. What happened to that?” Suspicion crept into her mind. “Have you started gambling again?” Her tone sharpened, irritation flaring.
“No,” Erica denied it, but her hesitant tone betrayed her lies. “I used it. I bought jewelry and bags… And I need a gown for a party next month!”
“Erica!” Lydia hissed. “Don’t lie to me. “I know what you are doing. I warned you about this before. Do you remember what happened last time? You caused chaos in the family because of your gambling. And yet, here you are, repeating the same mistakes.”
Her tone dipped a bit as she reprimanded her daughter, “Do you realize how destructive this habit is? Your father gambled away everything, and it ruined him. That’s why I left him. Do you want to follow in his footsteps?”

She paused to take a breather, her teeth clenching. “If you keep this up, I won’t be able to help you anymore,” she warned. “You need to get a grip before it’s too late.”
“I am sorry, Mom,” Erica cried out desperately, her words tumbling out in a frantic rush. “Please, you have to help me this time. I need the money urgently. If I don’t pay them back, they’ll come for me. Do you understand? These people aren’t bluffing—they’ll take me away! Do you understand how serious it is? Convince Dylan to take me back. Living like this is difficult for me.”
“Okay…” Lydia snapped. “I’ll send you some money tomorrow. But listen to me—this is the last time. Do you hear me? My last warning. You have to stop this nonsense.”
“I promise,” Erica said instantly. “I’ll stop gambling, but you have to make Dylan bring me home.”
“I’ll see what I can do,” Lydia said tersely.
Outside the room…
Lilianna stepped out of her room, her empty water bottle in hand, intending to refill it in the kitchen. As she walked past the adjacent room, she heard Lydia speaking on the phone. She paused, her brows knitting in curiosity. She froze as she heard that Erica had a gambling habit.
‘Erica. Gambling. Debt.’ Those words seemed to echo in her ears.
‘How did I not know about this?’ she wondered. ‘When did she develop such a habit?’
