Chapter 155: The surprise birthday gift
Ava blinked at the screen, her chest tightening. The text was unexpected, disarming her entirely. “Gift? Did he really prepare a gift for me?”
Ava found it hard to believe it. She read the text yet again to confirm if she hadn’t read it wrongly. “He did prepare a gift for me,” she mumbled with wonder and doubt.
She rose quickly, her curiosity overpowering her skepticism, and hurried out of the bedroom. Her feet moved faster as she approached the study, her heart racing with anticipation. Pushing the door open, she flicked on the lights and scanned the room, searching for a box, a bag, anything resembling a gift. But there was nothing.
“Dylan! Was that a prank?” Her teeth ground together as frustration bubbled to the surface. “Why am I so stupid? He’s never wished me a happy birthday before, let alone prepared a gift. What was I expecting? Forget it.” She shrugged. “I’ll leave this place, his life, and everything related to him. I am so done.”
She turned to leave but paused as she saw something on the worktable. Her steps faltered, and she looked back.
“What is that?” Her gaze narrowed as she spotted a folder lying on the table. “Why would he leave documents like that?” As she approached, her eyes widened slightly at the sight of a birthday card resting atop the folder.
‘Is this the gift he was talking about?’ she wondered to herself. Tentatively, her fingers reached for the card, trembling as she picked it up.
‘Happy birthday, Ava…This is your birthday gift. I hope you will like it.’
Her heart thudded in her chest, louder and heavier with each beat. With a mixture of apprehension and hope, she opened the folder.
‘Property Transfer Document.’ She couldn’t believe what she was seeing.
“What on earth…” Her mouth hung open as she skimmed the details. Dylan had transferred ownership of the villa to her.
‘Why? Why?’ Her mind screamed. She read through the document again, desperate to confirm what she was seeing.
It was real.
Her mind swirled in confusion, disbelief, and an ache she couldn’t quite name. Her knees threatened to give way. ‘What does this mean?’
Just as she was wondering, her eyes caught sight of a small note peeking out from beneath the folder. Her hands moved mechanically as she placed the documents aside and reached for the slip of paper.
‘This house has always been yours, and now I’m finally giving it to you. This is just a token. Whatever I have is all yours. Just be my wife. I’ll give you everything, including myself.’
Her heart clenched, a storm of emotions surging through her. ‘Why now? Why is he saying all this now, when I’ve finally decided to leave him?’
The note blurred in her trembling hands as tears threatened to spill. She tried to harden her resolve, her mind screaming at her not to let his sweet words weaken her. She couldn’t trust him again. But no matter how much she willed herself to feel nothing, the ache in her chest grew unbearable every time she thought of walking away from him.
“No, I don’t need anything from you. I don’t want this.” She fled the study. Her vision blurred, her breaths uneven as she dashed away. The ache in her heart burned hotter with every step, but she pushed forward, desperate to escape the emotions threatening to pull her back into his orbit.

Dylan sat back in the plush leather seat of the private jet as he checked his phone, hoping to see some text messages from Ava, but there were none. ‘ Has she not seen the gift yet?’
For a moment, his thumb hovered over Ava’s name on the screen, the temptation to call her almost overpowering. But before he could press the button, Justin approached with brisk steps, his expression charged with urgency.
“We’ve pinpointed his exact location,” Justin announced.
Dylan’s head snapped up, his earlier distraction vanishing. His gaze sharpened, and he straightened in his seat. “Where is he?”
“Hawaii. He is there with his family,” Justin explained quickly, “enjoying their vacation.”
A glimmer of determination flickered in Dylan’s eyes. When he heard that the former COO had been spotted in Hawaii, he decided to go there. He wanted to talk to him personally.
Dylan had been waiting for this lead. He believed this man might know something about the mysterious enemy.
“Then what are we waiting for? Get us there as fast as possible,” he snapped with authority. “Tell your team to stay sharp—I don’t want any slip-ups this time. I need this man alive.”
Justin nodded firmly. “Understood. I’ll make sure everything goes smoothly.” He headed toward the cockpit to relay Dylan’s orders.

Dylan leaned back against the seat, exhaling deeply as he stared down at his phone. His thumb brushed the edge of the screen, Ava’s photo staring back at him. “Just a couple of days,” he mumbled. He wanted to finish this business quickly, to return to her and make things right. “This time, I’ll change the history. I’ll rewrite the story—for you, for us.”
Ava, on the other hand, packed her things and left the villa. She didn’t want to stay a minute there as she was afraid her resolve to break the tie with Dylan would crumble. She was already determined to keep her distance from him and rewrite her life, where there shouldn’t be any existence of Dylan.
But why was her heart aching so much? Why did she want to give him a chance?
Memories of Dylan’s words, his actions, the small glimmers of change he had shown, danced in her mind, taunting her resolve. Was it possible he had truly changed? Could she give him another chance?
As the car started moving down the street, she grew restless. She wanted to ask the driver to turn the car and take her back to the villa, but then a voice inside her head reminded her to stay strong. ‘Don’t go back. You’ve endured too much. You can’t let your resolve falter now.’
Then, like a sudden gust extinguishing a flame, the memory of her pain surged forward. The sleepless nights, the tears she had cried, and the weight of disappointment resurfaced, hardening her heart.
‘No,’ she whispered to herself. ‘I can’t forget what I’ve been through. I can’t let myself fall for him again.’
She sank back into her seat with a shaky breath, her reflection in the window staring back at her with misty eyes.
Late at night…
The jet finally landed. It was past midnight when they checked into the hotel.
“This is the same hotel where he is staying,” Justin murmured as they entered the elevator. “Your room is on the floor above his.”
“Good. I want him brought to me immediately,” Dylan said with determination, his tone commanding.
“Now?” Justin hesitated, briefly caught off guard. “It’s past midnight. You should rest and deal with this in the morning.”
“I didn’t fly all the way here to sleep,” Dylan snapped. “Bring him to me now.”
“Sure.” Justin nodded, silently admiring Dylan’s relentless determination. As they reached Dylan’s suite, he ushered him inside before heading off to fulfill the order.
