Chapter 168: People don€™t care about the truth.
Resignation?
The word hit Ava like a punch to the gut.
“What nonsense?” Ava’s eyes blazed as she slammed the phone onto her desk, the fury in her chest nearly choking her.
“What link up you are talking about?
Nicholas and I are just friends, nothing else.” Jodie raised an eyebrow, feigning innocence but clearly relishing the chaos.
“But the photographs suggest otherwise,” she said slyly.
“You know how it works, ma’am.
People don’t care about the truth.
They believe the story that sells.” “This is bullshit,” Ava spat.
“I won’t let anyone slander me over some baseless gossip.” Her resolve simmered beneath her anger.
Knock-Knock€¦ Before Jodie could respond, a sharp knock echoed through the room.
“Come in,” Ava barked with impatience.
The door creaked open, and a man in a sleek black suit stepped in.
His face was grim, his posture stiff.
Ava recognized him as an assistant to one of the directors, and her instincts screamed trouble.
“The directors have called for an urgent meeting,” he announced.
“You are required to attend, ma’am.
It will begin in thirty minutes.” Straightening her back, she nodded curtly.
“Understood.
I’ll be there.” The man inclined his head and exited without another word.
Jodie smiled sneakily, happy with the prospect that the directors would tear Ava apart with their sharp questions and accusations.
Under their pressure, Ava had to resign.
She couldn’t wait to see Ava walking out of the office.
But she hid her excitement and made a worried look.
“I hope you can explain them well,” she said, pretending to be sympathetic.
However, Ava didn’t need her sympathy.
She could fight her own battle.
“Don’t waste time on thinking about meaningless things.
Follow new episodes on the "N0vel1st.c0m".
Go and do your job.” Jodie left the office.
Her lips curved into a sly smile as she closed the door behind her.
Her mind raced with excitement at the prospect of Ava being grilled by the directors.
Fate seemed to be turning the tables in her favor.
“This is what you get for humiliating me,” Jodie muttered under her breath.
“You asked me to resign.
Now see, you will be forced to resign.” As she walked down the empty hallway, she pulled out her phone, her fingers deftly dialing a familiar number.
As the line connected, a voice on the other end answered smoothly.
“The plan is working perfectly,” Jodie murmured.
“The directors are seething with anger.
They are all convinced Ava is colluding with the Bakers.
There is no way they’ll let her continue as COO.” A chuckle echoed from the other end of the line.
“It’s all thanks to your clever maneuvering, Jodie.
You never fail to deliver.” Jodie smiled gleefully, hearing those appreciative words.
“Thank you.
I can’t wait to see the outcome.
Sooner or later, the COO position will be yours.” ~~~~~~~~~~ Left alone, Ava slumped forward, her head in her hands, her elbows pressing against the desk.
The chaos in her thoughts was overwhelming.
She hadn’t shared her plans to meet Nicholas with anyone.
‘Could someone be keeping tabs on me?’ Doubts swirled relentlessly in her mind as her suspicions turned to Ethan, who had always expressed disapproval of her friendship with Nicholas.
Maybe he had someone follow her to check on her movements.
“I need to talk to him,” she muttered, picking up her phone with resolve.
Just as her finger hovered over the call button, the device vibrated in her hand.
Ethan’s name flashed on the screen, deepening her scowl.
“Hello?” she answered curtly, her tone sharp.
“Ava, are you okay?” Ethan’s voice was filled with concern.
“Is something wrong at work?” “Ethan, be honest with me,” she snapped.
“Did you post those photos?” “Are you suspecting me?” Ethan asked in a frenzy.
“Why would I even do that?” “You’ve never liked Nicholas,” Ava bit out, her frustration boiling over.
“You’d want to create trouble between him and Dylan.
I told you before-nothing is going on between us!
Why are you doing this?” “For heaven’s sake, Ava,” Ethan retorted with a mix of desperation and hurt.
“I didn’t post those photos.
I didn’t even know you were meeting Nicholas!” Ava exhaled sharply, rolling her eyes.
Though he sounded sincere, doubt still lingered in her mind.
“I called because I saw those rumors on social media,” Ethan continued with sadness.
“I was worried about you.
But instead of hearing me out, you’re accusing me.
Ava, we’re family.
I’d never do anything to humiliate you like this.” His words, laced with genuine pain, left Ava momentarily speechless.
The anger bubbling in her chest subsided slightly.
Her conviction that he was behind it started to waver after hearing his serious words.
‘Maybe I misjudged him,’ she thought, her inner conflict brewing.
‘If it wasn’t him, then who?’ “I know you’re still upset about what happened that day,” Ethan continued.
“I’ve apologized already, and I’m doing it again.
But please don’t suspect me of this.” “Never mind,” she said dismissively.
Her frustration ebbed, but she still hesitated to trust him fully.
“I shouldn’t have jumped to conclusions.
This news caught me off guard, and I was irritated.” “It’s okay.
I understand your frustration.
But this is not a simple issue.
Someone is deliberately targeting you.” Ethan’s tone grew serious.
Ava thought he knew something about it.
“Do you know something?” she asked curiously.
“I can’t be certain, but I have my suspicions,” Ethan began.
“I think it’s Lydia.
She is trying to tarnish your reputation to avenge her daughter.
And I wouldn’t be surprised if Dylan knows about it.” He purposefully said that to raise doubts in her mind, and he was successful in it.
Ava’s suspicion shifted from Ethan to Lydia, and her mind filled with bitterness.
Sensing Ava wasn’t retorting, Ethan’s courage grew.
“Do you know where Dylan is right now?” he asked.
“You might be thinking he is on a business trip.
But he is not.” Ava raised an eyebrow, wondering if he knew where Dylan was.
“What are you trying to say?” “He is in Hawaii,” Ethan announced, delivering the blow with deliberate precision.
“Hawaii?” Ava’s voice rose in disbelief.
The revelation hit her like a tidal wave, leaving her reeling with confusion and a growing sense of unease.
“I don’t think he is in Hawaii for business.
What possible work could he have there?
I mean, Ace Group has no branch in Hawaii.” Ethan’s scornful tone was like a thorn pricking at Ava’s already frazzled nerves.
Ava had been wondering where Dylan had gone.
It turned out that he was in Hawaii.
But why?
What was he doing there?
And most importantly, how Ethan knew about it.
“How did you know?” she asked, unable to hide her curiosity.
“A friend of mine is vacationing there.
He saw Dylan dining at a restaurant.” “Your friend?” Ava asked, skeptical yet intrigued.
“Yes,” he confirmed.
“We went to the same school, and he used to work for Williams Holdings.
He knows Dylan well enough to recognize him.” The more Ava listened, the more her thoughts spiraled.
What could Dylan possibly be doing in Hawaii?
Why didn’t he tell me?
What was he planning to do this time?
“Maybe he went there to meet with Erica,” Ethan said, adding to Ava’s confusion.
