Chapter 172: I€™m trying hard to change myself.
Ava’s eyes stayed fixed on Dylan as he carried her into his office, her mind racing with questions and confusion.
She had imagined he would yell at her and accuse her out of jealousy.
Yet none of that had come.
Dylan hadn’t even asked for an explanation.
Ava couldn’t process how he could be so calm.
‘Is this just an act?
Or has he truly changed?’ she wondered in her mind, the uncertainty gnawing at her.
So lost in her musings, Ava didn’t notice when Dylan stepped into the office until the soft cushion of the sofa embraced her.
“Justin,” Dylan called out, not breaking eye contact with Ava.
He knelt in front of Ava, gently holding her hands.
“Bring fresh clothes for her.” “Right away, sir,” Justin replied crisply.
Ava’s gaze shifted, finally noticing the tall figure standing silently by the sofa.
Only then did she realize Justin had been following them the entire time.
Blush crept down her cheeks when she thought Justin might have noticed her staring at Dylan unblinkingly.
“Do you need anything else?” Dylan asked, his voice softening.
Ava pulled her chin down and shook her head.
Dylan’s expression hardened as he looked over his shoulder at Justin.
“Handle the rumors,” he ordered with unwavering authority.
“And keep a close eye on Nina.
Her behavior is suspicious.” “I’ll deal with everything, sir.” Knock-Knock€¦ The sharp sound of knocking echoed through the room, interrupting their conversation.
Justin moved swiftly to answer the door, only to find the group of directors gathered outside.
Their uneasy expressions and hesitant posture immediately piqued his curiosity.
“Do you need something?” Justin asked as his eyes scanned their faces.
The senior director stepped up and said, “We are here to apologize.” “Uh€¦” Justin blinked, momentarily caught off guard.
He glanced over his shoulder toward Dylan and Ava, unsure how to proceed.
“Who is it?” Dylan’s sharp voice cut through the moment.
“The directors are here, sir,” Justin replied.
Dylan’s brows furrowed, a flicker of irritation crossing his face.

Rising from his position beside Ava, he straightened his suit jacket and walked to the door, his imposing figure filling the frame.
“Why are you here?” His hands slid into his pockets as he regarded the group coldly.
“We’re deeply sorry for accusing Miss Ava,” the senior director said apologetically.
“We accept that we were wrong.
Please, forgive us.” “What happened today was disgraceful,” Dylan said coldly.
“You humiliated Ava based on rumors, going as far as to force her resignation.
Tell me, who gave you the authority to make such a decision?
Have you forgotten that I hold the ultimate authority in this company?
It was my decision to appoint her, and without my consent, no one has the power to remove her.” The group shuffled uneasily, heads lowering under the weight of his reprimand.
“We’re sorry,” the senior director repeated weakly.
“We got carried away.” Another director stepped forward hesitantly.
“It was Nina Shaw.
She convinced us that Miss Ava might be leaking information to the Bakers.
We were worried-” “Worried?
Carried away?
That’s all you have got to justify your actions.” Dylan shot stern glares at them.
“Your reckless actions have not only disrespected Ava but undermined the values of this company.
I’m not interested in hearing your excuses.
Leave.
Cooperate with the investigation.” With a sharp tilt of his head, Dylan gestured to Justin, who immediately stepped in to usher the directors away.
Justin walked out of the office and closed the door behind him.
“Gentlemen, return to your offices.
Mr.
Brooks is extremely upset.
Don’t disturb him further.” The directors exchanged uneasy glances before shuffling away, their heads hanging low in silent resignation.
Inside the office€¦ Dylan lowered himself onto the sofa beside Ava, his intense gaze fixed on her.
“How are you feeling?” His tone softened from its earlier sharpness.
“I’m€¦fine,” she murmured.
“Thank you for standing up for me.” “In the past, I failed you,” he said, holding her hands.
“I didn’t stand up for you when it mattered.
But I won’t make that mistake again.” Ava blinked, startled by his admission.
Even though they were alone now, he hadn’t asked yet why she had met with Nicholas.
The sincerity in his voice was disarming, and for a moment, she couldn’t reconcile this calm, thoughtful man with the impulsive and volatile Dylan she once knew.
Her curiosity got the better of her.
“Aren’t you going to ask why I met Nicholas?” she ventured cautiously, searching his face for a hint of anger or suspicion.
Dylan met her gaze evenly, a small smile curling his lips.
“Yes, I want to know,” he admitted.
“But if you’re not ready to discuss it, that’s fine.
You’ve told me he’s your friend, and I trust you.
I have no issue with you meeting him.” He had been jealous and upset when he saw those photos, but he knew his impulsive actions only drove Ava farther away.
He wouldn’t let that happen.
Ava’s mouth fell open, astonishment clear on her face.
“No issue?” she repeated incredulously.
“I know it’s hard to believe,” Dylan said, his expression more serious.
“But I’m trying to change-to be a better person, a better husband.
It’s not easy, and I’m still learning how to be the man you deserve.” He paused, his voice softening even more.
“I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t jealous when I saw those pictures.
But I reminded myself that Ava wouldn’t deceive me.” Ava stared at him, her heart pounding as she processed his words.
The Dylan in front of her was totally different from the one she had known since her past life.
It was as if the body was the same but the soul residing in it was different.
Her mind spun, memories of her past life colliding with the present.
The shadow of his old cruelty lingered.
Could she trust this new Dylan, or was this just a façade, hiding the man who could easily hurt her again?
“Justin will bring your fresh clothes, but it might take a little time.” Dylan’s voice broke into her spiraling thoughts.
“You should change out of the wet ones.
There is a bathrobe in the bathroom if you’d like.” But Ava barely registered his words, her focus elsewhere.
She needed to clarify.
Before he could say anything more, she blurted out, “I met Nicholas to ask him to find you.” Dylan blinked, momentarily caught off guard.
“You didn’t go on a business trip,” Ava continued.
She carefully omitted what she had already learned, wanting to gauge his response.
“Where were you?”
