Chapter 198: Why is Dylan acting so secretive?
“You foolish man.” Dr.
Smith’s furious voice broke through Mathew’s growing panic.
“Do you realize what you’ve done?
Dylan Brooks isn’t just some ordinary man.
He is the anonymous donor who has been keeping this hospital afloat.
Without his donations, this hospital would struggle to keep its doors open, let alone maintain its top-tier facilities.” Mathew blinked in confusion, his mouth opening to respond, but the dean didn’t give him a chance.
“He has been donating more than you can imagine, all while staying in the shadows.
And you-you arrogant fool-just provoked him.
If he pulls his funding because of this, the entire hospital will suffer.” Dr.
Smith’s voice turned colder this time.
“I haven’t taken action against you because of your past performance and experience.
But now?
Looking at your arrogance, I have to reconsider.
Pray that Dylan doesn’t uncover anything against you.
If he does, you’ll lose more than your job.
Now get out of my sight.” Mathew staggered out of the chamber, his legs weak beneath him.
The dean’s words echoed in his mind, but it was Dylan’s parting threat that haunted him most.
He called Lydia immediately.
The first attempt went unanswered, but his nerves wouldn’t let him stop.
He redialed, and after a few tense rings, her sharp, impatient voice cut through the silence.
“Why are you calling me?” Lydia hissed.
“Didn’t I tell you never to contact me on this line?” “I know, but this is urgent,” Mathew replied.
“We have a serious problem.” “What is it now?” Lydia snapped.
“Isn’t Thomas dead yet?
If you’ve done your job, resign. Pretend you are upset and tell Dr.
Smith you can’t continue working there.
And then, your reward-fifty million in cash and a villa in Hawaii-will be waiting.” “Tsk, I didn’t even have a chance to enter the operating room, let alone do the surgery.” Mathew grimaced, rubbing his temples.
“Your nephew stopped me before I could even attempt anything.

Worse, he is suspicious of me.
He said he would investigate me.” “What did you say?
Dylan€¦stopped you!” The revelation exploded like a bomb, and Lydia had a feeling that her brain had blown up.
She had clearly seen Dylan leaving the hospital.
Why did he come back so soon?
Had he found Henry already?
“He rescued Dr.
Henry, who is now busy trying to save Thomas,” Mathew grumbled, regret gnawing at his heart.
“Not only this but he said those kidnappers had purposefully stopped him from reaching the hospital, to make sure he couldn’t do the surgery.
Everyone is suspicious now, and I’m their prime target.
If they dig into this, it’s not just me who is going down.
You will also be in danger.” “Shut up and let me think,” Lydia snapped.
Mathew slumped in his chair.
Beads of sweat clung to his forehead as he rubbed his face with trembling hands.
“Fine.
But hurry.
If Dylan keeps digging, we’re both finished.” “Dylan shouldn’t find out we met today,” Lydia’s voice filled his ear after some time.
“As for the kidnappers, don’t worry.
Dylan won’t be able to trace them.
They’ve covered their tracks well.
Just make sure Dylan doesn’t get the surveillance footage outside your chamber.
If he does, everything we’ve worked for will unravel.” Mathew swallowed hard, his throat dry.
“But-what if he has already asked for it?” he stammered.
“Then you’d better ensure it doesn’t exist anymore,” Lydia snapped, slicing through his hesitation.
“Do whatever it takes, Mathew.
You don’t have the luxury of mistakes now.” The line went dead, leaving Mathew in the oppressive quiet of his office.
He let out a shaky breath, panic and dread churning in his gut.
When Dylan returned to the waiting area, his steps faltered as he spotted Nicholas emerging.
Their eyes met, a silent tension crackling in the air.
Dylan’s gaze moved past him and landed on Ava before setting his eyes on Nicholas.
He could clearly tell that Nicholas was there to meet Ava.
“What are you doing here?” Dylan demanded coldly.
Nicholas didn’t flinch.
His stance remained firm as he replied, “I’m here for Ava.” “She has me,” Dylan countered with a mix of possessiveness and defiance.
“She doesn’t need anyone.” Nicholas chuckled, looking down at the space between them and then raising his eyes at him back.
“Here is some free advice: Don’t let insecurity eat away at you.
If your love for her is real, stop being jealous and focus on earning her trust back.
Or else,” he stepped toward him and leaned over slightly, “you’ll lose her.” With a light tap on Dylan’s shoulder, he added, “Think about it.” He walked past him, his posture exuding self-assurance.
Dylan stood rooted in place, his eyes following Nicholas’s retreating figure.
“Did he mean he is stepping back from Ava?” he wondered in a trance, his mind caught in a swirl of confusion and doubt.
The faint commotion outside the operating room pulled Dylan out of his thoughts.
His eyes darted toward the source, and he spotted Henry coming out.
He moved toward him purposefully, but before he could reach him, Ava rushed forward, her face pale with worry.
“How is Papa?” Her voice trembled, her hands gripping each other tightly, tears threatening to spill.
Henry flashed a smile.
“The surgery was successful.
Your father is out of danger.” Relief swept through Ava, her knees almost buckling as she exhaled a shaky breath.
“Thank you €“ thank you, Henry, for saving my father.” A smile broke through her tear-streaked face.
Henry chuckled.
“If you want to thank someone, thank Dylan.” He nodded toward Dylan, standing a short distance away.
“He is the one who insisted I come to the hospital.
I would have been out enjoying a relaxing day with Lilianna otherwise.
Not only that, but he also made sure I got here as quickly as possible.
The credit for saving your father goes to him.” Doubt lingered in her mind.
She couldn’t forget the cold, calculated way he had admitted to poisoning her father back then.
But in this life, he had gone to great lengths to ensure Thomas received the best care.
Gratitude and suspicion waged war in her heart. “Don’t listen to him,” Dylan interjected.
“I won’t take credit for his work.” Turning his focus to Henry, he added seriously, “I need to speak with you.
Privately.” “Sure.” Henry gave Ava a polite nod before following Dylan down the hallway, their steps brisk and purposeful.
Ava stood frozen, watching their retreating figures, her heart weighed down by unanswered questions.
“Why is Dylan acting so secretive?
What is he hiding?”
