Chapter 231: A web of family feuds and betrayals.
When Dylan arrived at the office, Justin was waiting for him by the desk, a small packet of medicine in hand.
Without wasting time, Justin handed it over.
“The doctor’s appointment is set for the afternoon,” he said briskly.
“For now, this should ease your discomfort.” His brow furrowed slightly as curiosity got the better of him.
“By the way, what’s with the sudden stomach trouble?
What did you eat last night?” Dylan paused, the memory of the previous night flickering vividly in his mind.
He exhaled, his shoulders sagging slightly.
“Spicy food,” he admitted with a hint of regret.
“Very, very spicy.” “Spicy food?
You?” Justin’s eyebrows shot up in shock.
He didn’t know when Dylan had started liking spicy food.
Dylan nodded sheepishly.
“From a street vendor.” Justin’s eyes widened to an almost comical extent.
“Street food?” he exclaimed.
“You, Dylan Brooks, ate street food?” “Ava insisted,” Dylan said with a faint, almost nostalgic smile.
Despite his current predicament, he couldn’t help but feel a glimmer of warmth as he recalled Ava’s laughter and the playful teasing they had shared.
The discomfort was a small price to pay for those fleeting moments of connection.
Justin blinked, his mouth slightly agape as he processed the information.
The stoic, meticulous Dylan Brooks-eating spicy street food at Ava’s behest?
It was a surreal thing€¦unimaginable. ‘Love makes people do the strangest things,’ Justin thought in a daze.
He was so lost in his thoughts that he had forgotten to tell him the things he had on his mind.
“You mentioned you had something to discuss,” Dylan prodded, his deep voice breaking his trance.
Justin cleared his throat, his expression turning grave.
“Yes, there is something serious,” he began.
“We’ve failed to capture Ava’s attackers.” Dylan’s relaxed demeanor vanished instantly.
His jaw tightened, and his gaze darkened.
“Failed?” he repeated coldly.
“What the hell?
Follow new episodes on the "N0vel1st.c0m".
How could you let them slip through your fingers?” Justin flinched but stood his ground.
“They didn’t slip,” he explained.
“We’ve followed every lead, but someone got to them before we did.
Nicholas’s men took them.” “Nicholas?” Dylan’s brows furrowed as his anger gave way to thought.
A sharp gleam of both annoyance and reluctant respect flickered in his eyes.
‘Damn him,’ Dylan thought, his jaw tightening.
Nicholas had outmaneuvered him, acting swiftly and decisively.
It was irritating, but Dylan had to admit-Nicholas was relentless and efficient.
“Well then€¦” Dylan’s lips curved into a wry smile.
“Let him deal with it.” He was confident Nicholas would discover Luke and Erica’s closeness soon.
If Erica and Luke had plotted the attack on Ava or were trying to ruin her reputation further, Nicholas would act against them on his own accord.
Justin, on the other end, was speechless.
He struggled to believe if he had heard correctly.
“Are you serious?
You are just going to step aside?” “Yes.” Dylan leaned forward, his elbows resting on the desk, and fixed Justin with a sharp look.
“Nicholas will handle this.
“He is bound to uncover Luke and Erica’s little alliance soon enough.
If those two had any part in targeting Ava, Nicholas would come down on them like a storm.
He is capable enough to deal with them.
Why waste time and effort?” Justin could hardly believe his ears.
“So, you’re just going to sit back and let him do everything?
Do you trust him?” Dylan held his gaze.
After a moment of pause, he said, “No matter how much I hate to accept it, the fact is Nicholas is a good friend of Ava.
He won’t let those bastards walk free.” He leaned back in his chair, a sly glint in his eye.
“This is not just a simple matter of Erica’s hostility toward Ava.
It’s more complicated now.
It’s a web of family feuds and betrayals.
Nicholas has his own war with the Bakers, and right now, his goals align with ours.
Whether it’s Erica or Luke, they’ll face the consequences.” Justin’s understanding deepened as Dylan’s strategy became clear.
“I see what you are saying.
Luke and Erica are just the tip of the iceberg.” He paused, then asked cautiously, “What should we do next?
Do we continue with our plan to trap Erica?” “One meeting with Rylee rattled her enough to send her straight to Luke,” Dylan said casually.
“For now, we sit back and watch the show.
She’ll keep making mistakes, and those will be the threads that unravel her.” Justin narrowed his eyes as doubts crept into his mind.
“But what if they are planning something bigger?
Something that could damage our business?
The Bakers have always had their eyes on the projects we are after, and they are not exactly shy about playing dirty.” Dylan thought for a moment, then spoke with a cold certainty.
“Who said we’re doing nothing?
We’ll keep an eye on them.
When the time is right, I’ll act.” He clenched his fingers on the armrests of his chair.
After a moment of contemplation, he said, “When Ava arrives, tell her to come see me.
There is something I need to discuss with her.” Justin nodded and left the office.
Several minutes later, Ava walked into the office.
Her steps faltered as her sight fell on his familiar figure behind the desk.
The memory of last night-the unexpected kiss and the awkward silence that followed-hung between them like a heavy fog.
She tried to steady her breath as she moved toward his desk.
Nervous energy flowed through her as she neared the desk.
She put the lunch box she had brought with her on the table.
“I figured you might need this,” she said.
She knew Dylan might have stomach issues and outside food wasn’t suitable for him at that condition.
So, she had prepared something simple for him €“ plain rice, steamed vegetables, and a bowl of soup.
Dylan glanced up, a look of surprise flickering across his face as his gaze landed on the lunch box.
“Plain food,” she replied.
“You might not have been able to digest the spicy food.” She studied him closely, noticing the subtle signs of discomfort that he was trying to hide.
“Your stomach must be hurting.
It’s not suitable for you to eat from outside.” Dylan flushed, clearly embarrassed.
He had meticulously tried to hide his stomachache, but how did she find out?
“I’m fine.” He quickly attempted to brush it off, though his tone lacked conviction.
“Sure you are.
But I didn’t bring this up just to hear you deny it.” She pulled out a container from her bag and pushed it toward him.
“This is the concoction I prepared for you.
I wanted to give it to you this morning, but you left so quickly.
Drink it.
You’ll feel better.”
