My Ex-Husband Begged Me to Take Him Back - Chapter 269
Chapter 269: We need to find Mathew.
Chapter 269: We need to find Mathew.
At Nicholas’s office€¦ The atmosphere was tense as Nicholas asked coldly, “Did you find where Doctor Fisher is?” Since that incident of Thomas’ surgery, Mathew Fisher had resigned from the city hospital and left the city without a trace.
Nicholas had been looking for him to interrogate him to see if he was involved with Lydia, but there had been no success until now.
Alex swallowed hard, shaking his head.
“We are still searching for him.
But we have uncovered something significant.” He stepped closer, pulling out his phone and sliding it across the desk toward Nicholas.
“I went to find him in his hometown and found this photo,” he added.
Nicholas’s brows furrowed slightly as he picked up the device.
The screen displayed a grainy graduation photo.
In it, a younger Lydia stood in the center, her radiant smile drawing attention.
Next to her, among the group, was a familiar face-Mathew Fisher.
“I see,” he mumbled.
“There is more,” Alex continued, pulling out a folder and placing it on the desk.
“His phone records show he contacted Lydia on the day of the incident.” “Hmm€¦” Nicholas nodded slowly, his sharp gaze lingering on the phone before handing it back to Alex.
Thoughts churned in his mind as fragments of the memory resurfaced.
He vividly remembered how Mathew had initially refused to perform the surgery, only to change his mind later.
At the time, Nicholas hadn’t thought of any conspiracy behind it.
He assumed Dylan had overreacted by accusing Mathew and dismissed Ava’s concern.
Now, however, suspicion began to creep into his mind.
What if Dylan had been right all along?
“She might have met with him,” Nicholas speculated.
“She could have convinced him to go through with it.” He paused, his expression hardening.
“We need to find Mathew.
If he talks, we’ll finally know what Lydia was plotting.” Alex nodded firmly.
“I’m already reaching out to his friends and relatives.
He can’t stay hidden forever.” “Good.
Find him as quickly as possible.” Nicholas leaned back in his chair, turning his attention to his laptop.
“In the meantime, we have another matter to address.
The S and Co received a collaboration offer from the Ace Group.
Follow new episodes on the "N0vel1st.c0m".
The CEO personally emailed me, requesting my assistance.
Arrange a meeting with the legal team.” S and Co was an emerging construction company, founded by Nicholas.
But he had kept it a secret.
Very few knew that he owned the company.
“I’ll make the arrangements,” Alex said, his posture straightening.
His tone turned grim when he spoke again.
“There is something else-something serious.
I came across shocking information this morning.” Nicholas’s fingers froze over his laptop keyboard.
He looked up sharply.
Alex hesitated for a moment.
“Last night, Mr.
Brooks was stabbed.” “What?” Nicholas exclaimed, shocked by the news.
“He was at his farmhouse with Miss Ava,” Alex explained carefully.
“The report says a robber had broken in while they were out for dinner.
When they returned, the intruder attacked them.
Mr.
Brooks was injured in the struggle.” Nicholas’s shock turned to anger.
“Why didn’t you tell me sooner?” he snapped, pushing his chair back and rising to his feet, his towering frame radiating intensity.
His eyes searched Alex’s face.
“How is Ava?
She isn’t hurt, is she?
Tell me she is safe.” “There is no mention of any injury to her,” Alex replied quickly, though he was not sure.
“From what I gathered, she is unharmed.
But Mr.
Brooks’s condition is serious.
The knife pierced his spine.” “Take me to the hospital,” Nicholas commanded, his steps already heading toward the door.
~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dylan finally regained consciousness.
His eyelids fluttered open, and his gaze landed on Ava, who was slumped over the edge of the bed, her head resting near his hand.
Despite the dull ache in his body, a faint smile tugged at his lips.
He lifted a hand, gently brushing her hair away from her face, his fingertips grazing her cheek.
The motion stirred her, and she blinked awake.
She straightened herself, relief washing over to her to see him awake.
“You finally woke up,” she breathed as she clasped his hand tightly in hers.
“Sorry, I scared you.” Tears shimmered in Ava’s eyes, threatening to spill over.
“Why did you take the knife, Dylan?
You could have died.” His gaze softened.
He had once lost her and had suffered a lot.
Life without her was like living in hell.
He couldn’t bear to experience that agony again.
Protecting her, even at the cost of himself, was the only choice he could ever make.
“I know how strong I am,” he teased lightly as he tried to lift her spirits.
“See?
I survived.
Nothing happened to me.” Ava’s chest tightened at his attempt to downplay the situation, her heart aching at the thought of the battle that still lay ahead.
She didn’t have the strength to tell him yet about the challenges he might face.
For now, she simply wanted to soak in the relief of seeing him awake.
“Yes, you are strong.” Her hand trembled as she wiped away the tears streaking down her cheeks.
“You are brave and can face anything that comes your way.
You’ll be fine soon.
I know it.” Taking a deep breath, she reached for the button beside his bed and pressed it to call the doctor.
“Let me get someone to check on you.” “Where is Justin?” Dylan asked.
“Did he get Gianna?” Ava shook her head.
“She escaped.
The police are searching for her, but there is no news yet.” “Damn it,” Dylan groaned.
“This woman is becoming a bigger headache every day.” “Don’t think about her now,” Ava urged.
“Your only focus should be on recovering.
Let the others handle her.” Meanwhile, the door opened, and a doctor entered.
He cracked a grin when he saw Dylan awake.
“Good morning, Mr.
Brooks,” he greeted him warmly and checked his vitals.
He unwrapped the bandage on Dylan’s back, inspecting the wound carefully.
“Everything looks fine,” he said after a moment.
Turning to Ava, he added, “We’ll need to run a few tests to assess his progress.
The nurse will be here shortly to handle the arrangements.” Ava’s nerves were evident in the slight tremble of her voice.
“Will he be okay?” The doctor nodded, his expression calm.
“We have discussed his condition already, and the tests will help us monitor his recovery.
Rest assured, he will recover.” The gentle assurance steadied her.
“Ava, why are you so stressed?” Dylan chimed in, interrupting their conversation.
“Don’t worry about me.
In a few days, I’ll be good as new.
Then we’ll take a long break from work-go hiking, camping, maybe even boating.
What do you say?” Her lips trembled as she fought back tears.
Despite the situation, he still had the strength to lighten the mood.
Forcing a small smile, she nodded.
“Yes, we will.”
