My Ex-Husband Begged Me to Take Him Back - Chapter 272

Chapter 272: I may not regain the same strength.
Inside the room€¦ Ava stepped in cautiously.
Her gaze immediately landed on Dylan, propped up by a nurse who was gently arranging a pillow behind his back.
“Don’t move on your own,” the nurse instructed firmly.
“You could tear the stitches.
If you need to shift or get out of bed, call for assistance first.” Dylan offered a faint nod, his expression strained.
“Thanks, I’ll keep that in mind,” he replied, wincing as he slowly tried to adjust his leg.
The sluggish movement made Ava’s chest tighten.
The doctor’s words turned out to be true.
The injury had affected Dylan’s leg movement.
“Don’t push yourself,” the nurse warned again.
“The damage isn’t as severe as we feared, but you need to rest and avoid unnecessary strain.
The doctor will provide more details later.” She smiled at him and then turned to Ava.
“Please ensure he doesn’t move around on his own.
Use the call button if you need assistance.” With that, she left.
Dylan shifted his attention to Ava, his dark eyes studying her closely.
“Where is Nicholas?” he asked casually.
“Has he already left?” Ava’s heart lurched further when he mentioned Nicholas, her nervousness growing.
She hesitated.
“I-I’m not sure,” she stammered.
“I think he might have left.” “What?” Dylan arched a brow.
“He came all this way to see us, and you didn’t even ask him to come in?” Ava glanced away, biting her lip.
“I thought€¦” She trailed off, fumbling for words.
“I thought you wouldn’t want to see him.
That maybe you wouldn’t be comfortable.” To her surprise, Dylan chuckled softly, not showing any sign of irritation.
“Why wouldn’t I?
He is your friend-and your business partner.
He came to check on us.
The least you could’ve done was invite him in to sit for a while.” His nonchalant response caught Ava off guard.

This wasn’t the Dylan she remembered-the man who had always been possessive and quick to bristle at the mention of Nicholas.
His sudden indifference, his casual acceptance, felt unfamiliar.
Her fingers fidgeted nervously.
Dylan’s calm exterior only deepened her inner turmoil, leaving her feeling more unsettled than before.
Was it genuine acceptance, or was he hiding his true feelings behind a façade of calm?
“What?” Dylan’s voice broke her thoughts.
“Why are you looking at me like that?” She shook her head, attempting to shake off the doubts clouding her mind.
“I just€¦ I thought you’d be jealous.
So, I didn’t ask him to come in.” Setting the file she had been holding aside, Ava moved closer, sitting at the edge of his bed.
“If you really want to talk to him, I’ll call him tomorrow.
But right now€¦” She reached out, taking his hand gently in hers.
“Right now, I want to be with you.
I want your undivided attention-no distractions.” Leaning in, she rested her head lightly on his chest.
The room fell into a comfortable silence as they sat together.
“Ava,” he called out quietly.
“Do you still love me?” Ava lifted her head and met his eyes, caught off guard by the question.
“Why would you ask that?” she asked gently, her fingers tightening around his hand.
He sighed in dismay.
“Because€¦ my legs are weak now.
I can’t move them like I used to.
I might end up in a wheelchair.” His eyes dropped to the blanket covering his lower body, his shoulders slumping.
“What if my condition gets worse?
What if I can’t ever walk again?
Would you still want to be with me?” “Don’t say such things.” She cupped his face, forcing him to look at her.
“You will be recovered completely.
I talked to the doctor.
Your condition is curable.
The doctor clearly told me that you would be able to walk.” “It’s the possibility,” Dylan said.
“I may not regain the same strength.
I don’t want to be a burden to you.
If you want to move on, I will let you go.
If you have someone in your mind, you can be with him.
I have no objections.” For a moment, she sat there, paralyzed, her mind refusing to process what he had just said.
Then, like a dam breaking, disbelief gave way to a surge of anger that burned hotter with each passing second.
“You fool,” she burst out, her voice shaking with fury as she sprang to her feet.
“What do you think of me?” Her sudden outburst caught him off guard.
He opened his mouth, an explanation forming on his lips, but she cut him off with a sharp wave of her hand.
“You don’t value me at all, do you?” she spat.
“First, you ignored me.
You abandoned me when I needed you most.
And now-now you want to hand me over to someone else as if I’m some object you can pass around whenever it suits you!” Dylan’s face fell, guilt and pain mingling in his eyes as he tried to reach for her.
“Ava, that’s not what I meant-” But she stepped back, out of his reach, her tears blurring her vision as she wiped them away angrily.
“You wanted a second chance, and I gave it to you.
I believed you when you said you wanted to make things right, that you were serious about us.
But I was wrong.
I was stupid to believe in you.” He tried again to explain, his voice pleading.
“Ava, please€¦ I didn’t mean to hurt you.
I just-” “Then why?” she interrupted.
“Why did you make those promises to my father?
Why did you tell him you’d take care of me for the rest of your life?
Why did you give me hope if you were just going to push me away again?” Dylan’s throat tightened, his hands clenching the sheets nervously.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered with regret.
“I shouldn’t have said that.
I just€¦ I didn’t want to be a burden to you.” But her anger refused to subside.
“You think being with you is a burden?
Do you think so little of me, Dylan?
Do you think I would ever see you that way?” Ava drew in a trembling breath.
“Let me ask you something.
If the knife had struck me instead-if I were the one lying here, paralyzed and helpless-would you have walked away?
Would you have left me for another woman?” “Never,” he said hastily, helplessly looking at her.
“I would never leave you, no matter what.” “Then how could you even think I would do the same to you?” The weight of her pain was etched into every syllable.
“Do you have any idea how much it hurts to hear you talk like that?
“You know what?
I hate myself for giving you so much power over me.
For letting you break me again and again.” She turned away, her shoulders tense with the effort of holding back her tears.
Dylan’s heart sank, his guilt overwhelming.
“You’re right,” he said softly with regret.
“I’ve been a complete jerk.
I don’t deserve your forgiveness, but€¦ please, don’t be mad at me, Ava.
I swear I’ll never say anything like that again.” “I’m not interested in your apologies,” she hissed.
