My Ex-Husband Begged Me to Take Him Back - Chapter 286
Chapter 286: Dr.
Mathew€™s confession Chapter 286: Dr.
Mathew€™s confession Mathew shook his head, his mind scrambling to make sense of the situation.
His wrists ached from the tight bindings.
“No, I don’t understand.
I have no enmity with you.” He paused as he ran his mind to find a plausible reason for Nicholas kidnapping him.
“Are you upset because I left all of a sudden?” He assumed Nicholas was upset with him because he had left without informing him.
After all, he had been treating him for so long.
Mathew swallowed hard, forcing himself to continue.
“Look, if this is about me leaving suddenly, I-I can explain.
I had my reasons.
But I didn’t think you’d take it this personally.” His voice carried a mix of nervousness and confusion.
Nicholas remained silent, his cold gaze locked onto Mathew.
The stillness in the room was suffocating.
“I even arranged for Dr.
Ross to take over your case,” Mathew went on.
“He is highly competent, and I know you’re in good hands.
You have a donor, and the surgery is happening soon.
So why€¦ why did you bring me here?” “I’m quite satisfied with Dr.
Ross and I’ve no doubt about his capability,” Nicholas countered.
“But I brought you here for a different purpose.
I need answers.” “What answers?” Mathew asked, bewildered.
“You conspired with Lydia to kill Thomas Williams,” Nicholas stated seriously.
“Do you think you can escape with it?
You, as a doctor, should save lives.
But you disregarded your ethics and tried to kill him.
You should be punished.” Mathew’s face paled, his body going rigid.
His mind reeled in shock, struggling to process the accusation.
He hadn’t expected Nicholas to investigate him.
And why would he do that?

What connection did he have with the Williams?
“I-I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Mathew stammered, his voice unsteady.
He tried to maintain composure, but the sweat beading on his forehead betrayed him.
“Why would I try to kill him?
You are mistaking me.
I have no connection with Lydia.” “Don’t lie to me,” Nicholas warned.
“I know everything.
Your phone records showed that you were in touch with her.
You talked to her that day.
Besides, she was there at the hospital that day-meeting you.” He threw a bunch of documents at him.
The sheets scattered, displaying pages of call logs and surveillance reports.
“Now spill it out.
Or you will regret lying to me.” Mathew’s entire body trembled as he stole a glance at the men in black suits surrounding him.
Their cold, unblinking eyes sent a shiver down his spine.
He knew they wouldn’t hesitate to end his life if given the order.
There was no way out.
His only chance was to confess-to spill everything and beg for mercy.
“I-I’ll tell you everything,” he blurted out.
“But you have to promise me€¦ you won’t kill me.
You’ll let me go.” Nicholas looked at him icily.
“You’re in no position to negotiate,” he stated coolly.
“But if you’re honest, I might consider letting you go.” A flicker of hope ignited in him amidst the despair.
“I’ll be honest with you,” Mathew said sincerely.
Taking a deep breath, he began, “Lydia and I have known each other since school.
We were good friends, and I always had a soft spot for her.
When she approached me, asking for my help to avenge her brother’s death, I refused at first.
I told her it was an accident, and that Thomas had no hand in it.
But she wouldn’t listen.” Nicholas narrowed his eyes as he listened to him.
Mather sighed, the weight of his choices crushing him.
“She showed me some evidence-documents, reports-that suggested Thomas was involved in the accident that killed her brother.
I still had my doubts, but€¦” He trailed off, his shame evident.
“She offered me money.
A lot of it.
I was struggling, and I-” He clenched his jaw.
“I gave in.” Regret gnawed at his heart as he continued, “Lydia wanted Thomas dead on the operating table.
She made sure everything was set up.
I was supposed to make it look like a complication during surgery.” He then narrated everything that Lydia had told him to do.
“She even arranged for some thugs to kidnap Dr.
Henry, to keep him from reaching the hospital that day.
But€¦” Mathew exhaled shakily.
“Dr.
Henry managed to escape.
He arrived in time and ruined Lydia’s plan.” Mathew lowered his head in shame and guilt.
“After that, I panicked.
I was terrified that Dylan would uncover the truth-that he’d come after me.
So I ran.
I’ve been hiding ever since.” Silence settled in the room momentarily.
Mathew’s voice quivered as he spoke again.
“I know what I did was unforgivable.
I let my greed blind me, and I betrayed my oath as a doctor.
But please€¦” He swallowed hard, forcing himself to meet Nicholas’s unrelenting gaze.
“Spare me.” Nicholas’s expression darkened as he processed Mathew’s words.
He could sense the man’s sincerity, but something was missing-there was no mention of the poison.
Did Mathew truly not know about it?
Or was he deliberately hiding something?
Doubts crept into his mind.
“Why did Thomas suddenly suffer a heart attack?” Nicholas pressed.
“Do you believe it could have been triggered by some kind of toxin?” Mathew’s brow furrowed as he recalled the medical reports.
“The test results showed that he had heart blockages-something quite common at his age,” he explained.
“Blood clots had formed in his arteries, which ultimately led to the heart attack.
There can be several reasons for that.
Yes, certain drugs can induce a heart attack, but no toxic substances were detected in his blood.” Nicholas grew even more serious.
‘There were no toxic substances,’ he murmured in his mind.
‘Could Ava have been mistaken?’ He had believed there was more to Thomas’s sudden health crisis, but if there was no evidence of poisoning, then perhaps Ava had been overthinking it.
Still, one thing was certain now-Lydia had indeed plotted to kill Thomas.
He pushed himself up from the chair, his mind already turning to the next course of action.
“Nicholas,” Mathew cried out as he saw him leaving.
“I-I told you everything I know.
Please, let me go.
I swear I won’t breathe a word of this to anyone!” Nicholas halted at the doorway, turning slightly.
His gaze was cold, unreadable.
“I can’t let you go yet,” he said flatly.
“You might try to warn Lydia.” His tone held finality, void of sympathy.
“You’ll stay here as my guest-until Lydia gets the punishment she deserves.” With that, he walked out.
Mathew sank further into the cold floor, his eyes dimmed with helplessness.
