Ava closed the file and studied him carefully.
Her father had already arranged legal measures to strip Ethan of everything the Williams family had given him.
Whether he surrendered the shares voluntarily or not, he would have lost them anyway.
But something in her heart softened.
Perhaps this was his way of making amends.
Perhaps he needed time to reflect on his actions.
“I won’t stop you,” she said coolly.
“If this is what you want, then do as you please.
But the shares will remain safe with me.
If you ever want them back, or if you’d rather sell them, let me know.
I’ll buy them from you.
You can use the money to start your own business.” Ethan’s throat bobbed as he swallowed, processing her words.
He had expected her to reject him outright, to shut him down completely.
Instead, she had left him with an option-a way back, if he ever chose to take it.
Ethan remained silent for a moment, his gaze locked on Ava, unreadable and distant.
Finally, he exhaled slowly and spoke, “Thank you, but I have already given it to you.
Right now, I’m not thinking about business.
I want to spend my time at the orphanage.
If I ever decide to start something of my own, I’ll reach out to you.” His lips curled into a faint, bittersweet smile.
“Goodbye, Ava.
I hope the company prospers under your leadership.” With that, he left.
A whirlwind of emotions swirled inside her-disappointment, sadness, and a trace of lingering anger.
“This wouldn’t have happened if you had just stayed loyal to this family,” she murmured under her breath.
“You betrayed me, you betrayed my father€¦ but still€¦ I hope, someday, you will come to your senses and apologize to Papa.” She tucked the file inside her drawer, locking it securely before grabbing her bag.
Straightening her posture, she strode out of the office.
~~~~~~~ As Ava stepped into the studio, she immediately spotted Nicholas sitting on the sofa, his expression grim.
Settling beside him, she studied his face, noting the rigid set of his jaw.
“What is the matter?” she asked with concern.
“You look tense.” “I found something shocking-a deep conspiracy to kill your father,” Nicholas stated gravely.
Ava’s face turned pale.
A cold wave of dread washed over her, making her spine stiffen.
“A conspiracy to kill my father?” she echoed.
“Who is behind it?” “Check this out.” Nicholas held up his phone and played a video.
The screen flickered to life, revealing Mathew Fisher’s confession of his crime.
Ava’s eyes brimmed with unshed tears as she continued to watch the video.
“I am sorry,” Mathew sobbed, his face drenched with sweat.
“I became greedy and couldn’t refuse Lydia’s lucrative offer.
I agreed to her and joined hands with her.” His head dropped, shoulders shaking with remorse.
Ava covered her mouth with her hand.
Her throat tightened, rage and anguish battling inside her.
It was Lydia who had conspired to kill her father.
The memories from her past life surged forward, hitting her with relentless force.
Her father had suffered a similar heart attack back then.
He had died on the operating table, and now, it was horrifyingly clear that Lydia had been behind it all along.
But why?
What kind of grudge did Lydia hold against her father?
Why would she want to kill him?
Ava’s mind raced.
Maybe Lydia had tried to kill him before.
‘The accident€¦ Could it be?’ The thought sent an unbearable shiver through her body, making her stomach churn.
The fateful car crash that took Dylan’s parents-was it truly an accident?
Or had Lydia planned it, intending to kill her father but claiming the wrong lives instead?
Nicholas’s voice cut through her turbulent thoughts.
“I asked him about the poison.
But he is not aware of it.
The test results showed no toxic substances in your father’s system.” Ava’s gaze snapped to him, her heart pounding.
She recalled Dylan claiming to have poisoned her father in her past life.
‘Did he lie to me back then?’ she wondered inwardly.
She could only assume Dylan had lied to her to make her sign the divorce agreements.
A knot of doubt coiled in her chest.
“But this is not the only thing,” Nicholas said, pulling her back to the present.
“There is someone else-someone close to you who is helping Lydia.” A fresh wave of dread washed over her.
“Who?” she asked, her heart sinking as she braced herself for the answer.
“Ethan.” Ava’s breath hitched as the name left Nicholas’s lips.
“Ethan?” she repeated with disbelief.
“You mean-he conspired with Lydia to hurt my father?
That’s impossible.” She slammed the phone down.
No.
She refused to believe it.
Ethan was many things-ambitious, stubborn, even reckless-but a murderer?
She shook her head, her emotions crashing over her like relentless waves.
“I know Ethan has tried to take the president’s post from me.
But it wasn’t out of malice.
He was trying to protect me-he thought Dylan would take everything away from me.
That’s why he did what he did.
It was wrong, and I punished him for it.
I fired him.” A painful lump formed in her throat.
“But he would never think of hurting Papa.
Never.” Her voice cracked slightly.
“You must be mistaken.” Nicholas exhaled slowly, his jaw tightening.
The way she was defending Ethan-even after everything-made his chest tighten with frustration.
She trusted that man so much, and his heart ached for her.
He didn’t know how she would react when she found out the full extent of Ethan’s deceit.
“I wanted to believe it was a misunderstanding too,” he said, watching her reaction carefully.
“But what I found was too suspicious to ignore.” He slid his hand into his coat pocket and pulled out a small stack of photographs.
He spread them out on the table before her.
“I’ve been keeping an eye on him, and this is what I have found.
Ethan has been meeting with Lydia secretly.”
