My Ex-Husband Begged Me to Take Him Back - Chapter 313
Chapter 313: The gift Chapter 313: The gift Ava’s chest ached, her vision blurring with unshed tears.
“Nicholas, why are you doing this?” She choked on the words.
“Take this.” He took her hand in his, pressing the box gently into her palm. “Keep it safe for me.
If I make it through, I’ll take it back from you.” Ava exhaled a shaky breath, her fingers tightening around the box before she slipped it into her bag.
“Alright,” she finally relented.
“I’ll keep it with me for now.
But you should stop thinking nonsense and be positive.
I want you to be by my side when I give birth.
So don’t even think you won’t make it through the surgery.
You have to.” He mustered a smile, nodding as if sealing an unbreakable vow.
“Since you say that, how could I not fulfill your wish?
I’ll definitely be there for you.
I promise.” Ava leaned forward and wrapped her arms around him in a tight embrace.
Nicholas stiffened, momentarily caught off guard.
But as the warmth of her presence seeped into him, he let go of his restraint and hugged her back.
He closed his eyes, allowing himself to savor the fleeting moment.
“It’s getting late.
You should leave.” Nicholas pulled back.
He was scared if she stayed a little longer, he couldn’t control his emotions.
Ava nodded.
“I’ll call you later.” She left, taking a piece of his heart with her.
Nicholas reached for his phone and called Alex.
“Help me draft a fresh will.” ~~~~~~~~~ Dylan waited for Ava impatiently.
His eyes flicked to the clock on the wall, his restlessness deepening.
“Didn’t she say she’d be back early?” he muttered under his breath.
“Why is she taking so long?” His restlessness gnawed at him, making it impossible to sit still.
Unable to wait any longer, he grabbed his phone and quickly dialed Mr.
Douglas’s number.
The call rang a few times before it was answered.
“Mr.
Follow new episodes on the "N0vel1st.c0m".
Douglas€¦Is Ava still at the office?” “Uh, no.
She left an hour ago.” “An hour ago?” Dylan echoed, his worry intensifying.
‘Then why isn’t she home yet?’ “She has gone to the hospital to see Mr.
Nicholas,” Mr.
Douglas added.
“I see,” Dylan said slowly, realization dawning.
That’s where she had been all this time.
His shoulders relaxed slightly, though an uneasy feeling still lingered in his chest.
“Thank you for letting me know.” He ended the call, a small sigh of relief escaping his mouth.
Ding €“ Ding €“ Ding€¦ Dylan’s phone buzzed again, this time with a series of incoming messages from Alex.
His brows knitted together in surprise.
“Why is Alex texting me?” Curious, he tapped open the messages and started reading.
‘Ethan had possibly poisoned Mr.
Williams.
We caught him discarding a toxic substance that could make anyone severely sick.
I’m sharing the details.
And one more thing €“ he is planning to sell his properties.
I am sure he is trying to escape.
Please stop him.’ Dylan’s features tightened as he read the message.
“Ethan.” He spat the name out like venom, his eyes darkening with fury.
“Bastard €“ you thought you could sell the properties that the Williams had given you.
Dream on.” He quickly checked the other attachments Alex had sent.
As he scanned the test report of the poison, his entire body tensed.
It was the same poison Henry had warned him about.
“So, Lydia gave it to him.
They worked together.” A slow, dangerous smirk curled at the edges of his lips.
“Ethan, you’re dead meat.
I swear I’ll finish you.” Just then, a familiar voice rang through the hall.
“Who are you going to finish?” Dylan’s head snapped up.
Ava was standing there, her gaze filled with curiosity.
She walked toward him.
“You’re finally back,” Dylan said, pushing his wheelchair toward her.
His anger momentarily softened as he took her in.
“I’ve been waiting for you.” Ava exhaled, rubbing her temple.
“Nicholas’s surgery is scheduled in two days.
He has been hospitalized.
I went to see him.” “I know.” “You know?” He nodded, a knowing smile tugging at his lips.
“Mr.
Douglas told me.” Ava shot him a knowing look, tilting her head slightly.
“You called him.” Dylan didn’t even try to deny it.
“You were late.
I wanted to check if you were still at the office.” Ava let out a deep sigh, sagging onto the sofa.
“You were saying something earlier,” she prompted, steering the conversation back.
“What was that?” Dylan casually shoved his phone into his pocket.
He wasn’t going to burden her with this.
She was pregnant, and the last thing he wanted was to stress her out with talk of Ethan and the poison.
He would handle it alone.
“It’s nothing serious-just some work-related issues,” he lied smoothly.
“Justin is taking care of it.” He flashed a reassuring smile.
Ava mirrored his smile.
She also didn’t bring up what she had learned.
Dylan was still recovering, and his focus should be on getting better, not getting entangled in more danger.
He had already suffered enough to protect her-she wouldn’t let him shoulder any more burdens.
Instead, she changed the subject.
“So, you walked today,” she said, recalling their earlier conversation.
Her face lit up with genuine happiness.
“I promise to be with you for your next therapy session.” “As you wish.” Gripping the armrests of his wheelchair, he slowly pushed himself up and stood tall in front of her.
“Look,” he said with a triumphant smirk, “my legs aren’t shaking like before.” Ava gawked at him, her lips parting in shock.
For a moment, she could only stare.
Then, like a wave crashing over her, excitement surged through her heart.
“You’re standing,” she exclaimed, barely able to believe what she was seeing.
“Yes.” Dylan turned slightly, then faced her again.
“See?
I’m improving.
The therapist said I should start walking slowly.” Ava’s hands shot up to cover her mouth as tears welled in her eyes.
A laugh-half a sob-bubbled out of her.
“Dylan€¦ this is incredible.” His expression softened as he reached for her, cupping her face with both hands.
His thumbs gently brushed her cheeks, catching the happy tears before they could fall.
“Soon, I’ll recover completely.
And then€¦I’ll give you a grand wedding.” He leaned in, capturing her lips in a slow, lingering kiss. Ava melted into him for a fleeting moment before pulling back, worry flickering in her eyes.
“Don’t stand too long,” she said gently, already helping him ease back into the wheelchair.
“You can’t force yourself.” Her hands lingered on his cheek as she gazed at him intensely.
Dylan breathed, but there was no frustration-just contentment.
“You’re always fussing over me.” “And I always will.” Then, with a playful gleam in her eyes, she asked, “What do you want to eat tonight?” Dylan’s gaze gleamed with playful mischief.
“I want to eat,” he murmured, pulling Ava down onto his lap with ease, “you.”
