Chapter 61: The danger
Ava quickly pulled out her phone and started filming them, her hands shaking with nervousness. She crouched low beneath the open window as she listened to their conversation.
“I can’t stay here any longer.” Brian’s face was tight with anxiety. “I fooled Nicholas Baker and convinced him you weren’t with me that day, but it won’t hold forever. That man is dangerous. And Dylan? He is even worse. If he finds out the truth, he’ll kill us both. We need to leave, right away.”
“No,” Gianna said sharply, “I’m not running away—not yet. This time, I’ve set up a trap so perfect that Ava can’t escape. Dylan won’t find out anything. He trusts me completely.”
Her words sent a shiver down Ava’s spine. Dylan’s trust was like a weapon, which gave her the courage to go all out against Ava.
“As long as Dylan blames the Williams for his parents’ deaths, he will never trust Ava,” Gianna continued with smug assurance. “We’re winning this game. And Nicholas – he is just an illegitimate son of the Bakers. He is nothing compared to Dylan.”
Brian, however, wasn’t convinced. “It won’t take long for Dylan to lose his faith in you,” he warned. “Nicholas is determined to find out what happened that day. I don’t know what kind of relationship he has with Ava, but he is not going to stop until he exposes you.”
He grabbed her shoulders, his worry palpable on his face. “I’ve spoken to a friend. His cargo ship leaves for Bangkok tonight. Come with me. We can escape all of this—live peacefully, far away from the danger. If you stay here, Gianna, you’re either going to end up in jail or worse—dead.”
Gianna wouldn’t go anywhere with him. ‘A loser like you won’t be able to give me the life I want,’ she thought, suppressing a smirk. To her, Brian was merely a pawn. She had never liked him.
With a sweet smile plastered on her face, she leaned in closer, wrapping her arms around his neck. “Of course,” she purred. “We’ll have a peaceful life together. I’ll come with you.”
Brian sighed in relief, the weight of his worries seemingly lifting. “Alright. Let’s get out of here before anyone notices us.” He grasped her hand, eager to escape the shadows of the alley. But Gianna pulled her hand from his grip, stopping him in his tracks.
He turned, a skeptical look crossing his face. “What’s wrong?” he asked in confusion.
“I’ve got some unfinished business to take care of,” she said coolly. “I’ll be at the dock in the evening.”
Brian’s uncertainty flickered across his features, but he didn’t press further. He nodded, still trusting her.
Ava gasped as she heard their escape plan. “Never,” she muttered under her breath. “I won’t let you escape.”
She turned to leave, but her foot stepped on an empty beer can, the cracking sound piercing the air. Her breath caught in her throat when she saw Gianna and Brian whip their heads toward the window, their eyes locking on her in an instant. For a split second, time seemed to freeze, panic twisting her guts. Then, without thinking, she spun on her heels and fled.
“Stop her!” Gianna yelled at the top of her lungs.
Brian rushed out the door at a breakneck speed and chased down Ava.
Ava’s breath came in short, sharp bursts as she sprinted down the narrow alley, her mind racing faster than her legs. She could hear Brian closing in on her, his heavy footfalls growing louder with every second.
“Get back here!” Brian shouted, his menacing voice bouncing back from the walls.
Ava’s pulse thundered in her ears as she risked a glance back, catching sight of Brian’s determined face, his arm outstretched as if he was just inches away from grabbing her. Panic surged through her. She couldn’t let him catch her. She pushed herself further, running as fast as she could.
“You can’t run forever!” he shouted. “I’ll get you.” He stretched his hand, almost reaching Ava.
Inside the house, Gianna didn’t move. Instead, she stood there with a gloomy face as she pulled out her phone and called someone. “Come to the alley right away and stop Ava,” she urged with urgency. “If not, she will expose us. All our narratives will collapse, and Dylan will come after us.”
A gruff voice responded with a hint of confidence, “Don’t worry. She can’t escape this time.”
A sly smile crept across Gianna’s lips as she hung up. “Ava, you shouldn’t have followed me.” Stepping out of the house, she walked briskly. As she took the turn, she saw Brian stopping Ava. With a malicious glint in her eyes, she hurried over to them.
Ava’s breathing hitched as she met Brian’s furious look. Instinctively, her legs took a step back, urging her to escape. But as she glanced over her shoulder, she saw Gianna approaching. Her stomach dropped to the ground as she realized she was cornered, nowhere to run.
Desperation clawed at her as they closed the distance. “I heard everything.” Ava found her voice, though it trembled. “You two won’t escape with this. I’ll expose you.” She managed to say, mustering what courage she could.
“How are you going to expose us? With that recording?” Gianna pointed at the phone clutched tightly in Ava’s hand.
In a reflexive motion, Ava tried to hide the phone behind her back, but Brian lunged forward, snatching it away effortlessly.
“Hey…” Before she could stop him, he threw the phone down and stomped on it, breaking it into pieces. Ava’s jaw fell apart as she watched her phone shatter beneath Brian’s boot. A mix of fear and rage churned inside.

“See? Now, your so-called evidence is gone,” Gianna taunted, a smug smile stretching across her face. She stepped closer, invading Ava’s space. “What are you going to do? Run to Dylan and tell him what happened here! Do you really think he’ll believe a word you say?”
Brian also laughed, joining her in mocking Ava.
Ava’s steps moved further backward as they came in closer, her eyes darting around to seek help. But there was no one, much to her dismay.
“That phone wasn’t the only way I could expose you,” Ava shot back, trying to sound brave. “You’ve left enough traces. The cops will find out the truth.”
Brian snorted, his face twisting in contempt. “The cops won’t find out anything if you’re not around to tell them.”
Ava’s pulse quickened, her breath coming faster as she realized just how dangerous the situation had become. They might be willing to do anything to keep her silent.
