Chapter 75: The trap
“Leave me alone,” Ava hissed. “You can’t force me.” She finally tore her arm away from Dylan, her eyes sparking with defiance.
Dylan spun around, a simmering fury hardening his face. “Am I forcing you? Just remember—until our divorce is final, you’re still my wife. And as long as that stands, you can’t see another man.”
“Really? Then what about you?” Ava spat, slamming the wine glass she was holding down onto the tray of the nearby waitress.
It was the same waitress Gianna had bribed. She had come to give Dylan a drink but found him in a heated argument with Ava. But she couldn’t leave without carrying out her plan. She watched them keenly from under her lashes.
“You are with Gianna, aren’t you?” Ava leaned closer, her words sharp and pointed. “You treat your mistress so well that you often forget you have a wife. I am doing the same. You shouldn’t have a problem with that.”
Dylan’s grip tightened, pulling her back toward him, his tone almost a growl. “Gianna and I aren’t together. She is just a friend.”
Ava didn’t flinch, meeting his gaze squarely. “Nicholas is also a friend,” she snapped back.
His face contorted in fury. In the meantime, he noticed the waitress hovering nearby. “What are you looking at? Get lost.”
The waitress flinched, her eyes flickering with fear, and started to turn away.
“Wait!” She kept her gaze locked on Dylan fiercely. “Why are you yelling at her? She is only doing her job.”
The waitress hesitated, looking uncertainly between the two. Ava picked up the glass meant for Dylan, lifted it to her lips, and drained it in one smooth motion. She set the empty glass back on the tray.
Turning her focus on Dylan, she hissed, cold and unyielding, “We’re done, Dylan. I’ll see whoever I want. You don’t control me.”
“You and I are done. I can see anyone I want. You have no control over me.” With that, she furiously turned around and walked away.
With that, she spun on her heel, her steps sharp and purposeful as she strode away, leaving him stewing in her words. Dylan clenched his jaw, then grabbed the remaining glass off the tray, downing the wine in a single, furious gulp. He glared after her, seething in anger.
Gianna’s pulse quickened as she watched the waitress approach, her mind already lost in vivid fantasies of finally having Dylan to herself. Because of excitement and anticipation, she failed to notice the distress on her face. “Well? Did you give him the spiked drink?” Gianna asked impatiently.
The waitress swallowed uncomfortably, glancing down, her hesitation clear. “I did spike the drink, but…” She trailed off.
Gianna’s smile disappeared, anger replacing her excitement. “What happened?” she hissed, her face contorting in annoyance.
“When I went to serve him, he was in a heated argument with some woman… I think it was his wife,” the waitress blurted out, explaining what she had witnessed.
Gianna’s face twisted with fury. “Useless! Get out of my sight,” she snapped, and the waitress scurried away.
Gianna puffed in anger, her fists clenching tightly, her knuckles turning white. Her plan to sleep with Dylan was dashed. She understood it was Ava. Who else could piss Dylan off so completely? Only Ava could bring out such raw frustration in him.
“Bitch! How shameless you are!” Her insides burned with resentment. “I can’t let you get close to Dylan.”
A cunning idea crossed her mind, her eyes sparkling with malice. “Since you have drunk the spiked drink, I’ll turn the situation in my favor. Ava, you are doomed. What will Dylan do with you when he finds you in a compromised position with another man?”

Ava stormed back to her friends, her face flushed and eyes blazing. Lola noticed immediately and reached out, worry etching her features. “What happened to you? Why do you look so angry?”
“That jerk…” Ava glanced around, catching the curious stares from the others. Not wanting to make a scene, she took Lola’s arm and pulled her aside. She recounted her heated encounter with Dylan in a hushed tone.
Lola’s anger sparked as she listened to Ava’s words. “That moody Dylan has crossed all limits,” she grumbled. “Didn’t he already agree to divorce you? What is he trying to prove now?”
Ava felt an odd heat rising within her, her throat dry and her skin prickling uncomfortably. She rubbed at her throat, a faint grimace flashing across her face as she struggled to push down the sudden wave of restlessness.
Completely unaware of Ava’s discomfort, Lola continued her rant, “He certainly doesn’t like you. Now that he is finally free, he should just be with Gianna instead of pulling this possessive nonsense. What, is he suddenly in love with you or something?”
But Lola’s words barely registered; Ava’s mind was spinning, her body unsteady. A surge of heat flushed through her, making her feel lightheaded. She needed space, air—anything to calm this unsettling sensation.

“I need to go to the washroom,” she murmured, already turning away.
“Hey!” Before Lola could stop her, Ava walked away with brisk steps.
Gianna watched Ava slip out of the hall, a twisted satisfaction creeping across her face. “It seems that the drug has started showing its action. Time to carry out the plan.”
She glanced around, her gaze finally landing on Nicholas on the balcony. She smirked as she approached him. For this plan, who would be better bait than Nicholas?
Dylan would definitely destroy him after catching him with Ava.
‘I don’t have to be afraid of getting exposed,’ she thought as she closed the distance between them with a sweet, inviting smile.
When he heard the sound of approaching footsteps behind him, he turned around and saw Gianna. He gave her a wary look, uncertain of her intentions.
Gianna met his gaze, her tone light as she gestured back toward the hall. “The noise inside was getting a bit much. I just wanted a quiet moment out here, but I didn’t know someone was also bored from the loud noise just like me.” She tried to joke a little.
“I am not bored from the party.” Nicholas’s response was curt. He made to walk past her, but Gianna’s next words stopped him in his tracks.
“I saw you came with Ava. But you are alone here. Why aren’t you with her? She looked disturbed after arguing with Dylan. I saw her going out of the hall. Maybe you should go and check on her.”
Hearing her words, Nicholas grew restless. What if Dylan did something to hurt Ava? Worried and anxious, he hurried away to find her.
Gianna’s lips twisted into a smug grin as she watched him go. “Right into my trap. Now, let’s see how Dylan reacts when he finds you with Ava.”
