Chapter 95: Aren’t I enough?
Inside the room…
Ava’s smile lingered in the corners of her lips, but that looked strained. She took a steadying breath, glancing at the lovely flowers Nicholas had brought.
“The bouquet is beautiful,” she said softly, shifting the conversation to ease the tension. “Is it for me or… for your dream girl?” she teased, a hint of playfulness in her tone.
A smile broke onto Nicholas’s tight face, his eyes softening. “It’s for you,” he replied quietly, handing her the bouquet before setting a fruit basket on the side table. His worry lingered as he looked at her. “I am relieved that you are fine. Or else, I wouldn’t have forgiven myself.” Unable to control his emotions, he reached out and caressed her face.
Ava stilled, surprised by his touch, and her eyes met his instantly.
Just then, the door swung open, and Dylan entered. He stopped short, the scene in front of him catching him off guard. Dylan’s mind reeled; the closeness between them, the way they looked at each other appeared so intimate as if they were deeply in love.
Anger and jealousy hit him in waves, driving him insane. “Ava!” he shouted as he charged toward them.
Ava’s startled gaze shifted to Dylan, her pulse quickening. Nicholas quickly dropped his hand and turned to face him, but before he could process what was happening, Dylan seized him by the collar, his face twisted with anger.
“How dare you touch my wife?” Dylan growled. “I’ll tear your hand apart.”
“Stop it, Dylan!” Ava’s voice cut through the tension, desperate but resolute. “If you lay a hand on him, I swear I’ll never speak to you again. Then keep begging me, I won’t give you a chance.”
Dylan’s grip slackened as he looked at her, stunned. “You are threatening me for…HIM.” His gaze shifted back to Nicholas, eyes blazing, unable to believe that Ava would take Nicholas’s side.
“Let him go,” she demanded.
With a scowl, Dylan shoved Nicholas back, barely containing his resentment. “Get out,” he snarled, his voice cold as steel.
Nicholas wouldn’t leave. He smoothed his crumpled suit jacket and stood defiantly in front of him. “I am here for Ava. You have no authority to tell me what I should do.”
Dylan’s fists clenched as he fought the urge to lash out, but the raw disappointment in Ava’s eyes held him back. “Tell him to leave, Ava,” he demanded, hoping she’d understand his frustration.
But Ava only stared at him, a flicker of hurt in her expression. Where had he been all the time she needed him? And now he barged in, brimming with possessiveness and anger, trying to control her life again.
Exhausted by his constant outbursts, Ava spoke firmly, “He is here for me. Why would I ask him to leave?”
Dylan didn’t expect this answer, which only fueled his rage. “Why do you even need him?” he asked bitterly, stepping closer. “Aren’t I enough?”
“You should treat her with care,” Nicholas chimed in. “She is still weak. Can’t you see how pale she is? You are terrifying her.”
Dylan’s gaze dropped, seeing the weariness in Ava’s face. Her lips, which were naturally pink, were pallid as if blood had drained out of her body. She looked scared too. For a moment, he felt a pang of guilt. His features softened, though his anger simmered beneath, laced with jealousy.
“I am here now to take care of her,” Dylan said, glancing at Nicholas over his shoulder. “You should leave.” This time, his tone was not as sharp as before. His efforts to control himself were visible. But Nicholas wouldn’t deter.
“As I said, I’m here for Ava,” Nicholas replied defiantly. “And I won’t leave. I can’t rely on you. With your temper, you can hurt here, and I won’t let that happen.”
“You!”
“Enough!” Ava snapped before Dylan could say anything. Both men turned to her, and she glared at them, one by one. “Stop arguing. You are giving me a headache.”
Their concern overrode their rivalry as they rushed to her side.
“Where is your medicine?” Dylan asked urgently. “Why didn’t you tell me sooner? Let me get the doctor.” He reached to press the call button when he noticed Nicholas rummaging through the drawer beside her bed.
“What do you think you’re doing?” Dylan demanded, glaring at him.
“I’m finding her painkillers,” Nicholas replied smoothly, unfazed.
“Are you a doctor?” Dylan’s scowl deepened.

Ignoring him, Nicholas retrieved a tablet and held it out to Ava. “Here. This will help.”
Before Ava could reach for it, Dylan snatched the pill from Nicholas’s hand and nudged him aside. “Her husband is still here. I’ll do it,” he growled with possessiveness.
Dylan muttered curses in his mind, willing to shove him out of the room. But he was afraid Ava would get angry with him. He had to endure this eyesore for the time being.
Nicholas rolled his eyes, stepping back, and Dylan gently handed the tablet to Ava. “Take the medicine.” He handed her the tablet and then poured her a glass of water. But Ava tossed the tablet down.
“I don’t need it,” she spat. Her sharp gaze and the bitterness in her tone sliced through his confidence, leaving him uncharacteristically speechless.
“The medicine won’t help me,” Ava continued fiercely. “You are the reason for my headache.”
“What do you mean?” Dylan managed, struggling to keep his tone steady.
“You know exactly what I mean,” Ava replied coldly, meeting his eyes without flinching. “Before you stormed in here, everything was calm. But you— All you know is shouting irrespective of time and place. I am too tired of all this. Spare me. I want to rest.”
She clearly asked him to leave. Dylan’s heart sank, her words striking a chord. Ava’s razor-sharp gaze and her venomous words wounded him. The heaviness in his chest was unbearable.
He remembered the harshness with which he had spoken to her in the past, intending to humiliate her, and hurt her. At the time, he hadn’t thought how painful words could be. Now, standing in front of her with his own heart stinging, he understood for the first time how deeply words could wound.
He was guilty, and at the same time, he was distressed. Without a word, he pivoted and dashed out the door.
