Chapter 269: I, Feng Fan, Am A Man Of Honor Who Values Friendship
As Feng Fan and Elder Jiang made their way back to the White Crow Sect, their conversation grew serious.
“Elder Jiang, what happened to you after we got separated?” Feng Fan asked, glancing at the weary elder beside him.
Elder Jiang let out a heavy sigh, his face lined with exhaustion. “I managed to kill that foreign cultivator by a stroke of luck, using my life force. But the moment I took him down, more of their people started chasing me. I barely managed to escape and had to hide in several cities they’d already taken over. In one of those cities, I overheard something that might change the tide of the war.”
Feng Fan furrowed his brows and shook his head. “Elder Jiang, the strongest forces of our Black Turtle Continent were defeated. They’re all probably dead by now. What could we possibly do to change anything? Let’s just focus on cultivating. Once I break through a few realms and get stronger, it won’t be too late to kill them all.”
A confident smile curved Elder Jiang’s lips. “That’s where you’re wrong. None of them died.”
“What?!” Feng Fan’s eyes widened in shock. “Are you saying those old bastards didn’t die and just left the mess for us to deal with?”
Ignoring Feng Fan’s outburst, Elder Jiang continued. “It seems Prince Shen Yi used an Immortal-Tier array to trap them instead. He plans to break through to Immortal Ascension before killing them off.”
Feng Fan’s expression grew thoughtful. “So they can’t kill them outright and just trapped them instead… But doesn’t a person who breaks through to Immortal Ascension have to ascend to the Immortal World immediately?”
Elder Jiang shook his head. “Not necessarily. As far as I know, breaking through to Immortal Ascension means one can’t advance cultivation on lower worlds like ours anymore, but they can still remain here for a few days before being forced to ascend. Also, it seems Shen Yi is looking for someone on this continent. He’s been going from city to city, searching for this person, but no one knows who they are or what they look like.”
Feng Fan’s gaze sharpened. “So he trapped the continent’s strongest just to buy himself time… and now he’s hunting for someone? This doesn’t make sense.”
“Indeed,” Elder Jiang agreed, his expression somber. “Feng Fan, I know you’re exceptionally skilled at breaking arrays, better than anyone I’ve ever met. Do you think… you could go there and free our forces? As long as that Immortal-Tier Array is destroyed, we still have a chance to win.”
Feng Fan let out a sigh. “Elder Jiang, even if I could break through such an array, which, to be honest, I have no idea whether it’s possible—do you really think there won’t be guards protecting it? I’m sure I wouldn’t be able to get close, even with this disguise. They’d see through it the moment I approached.”
A bitter smile tugged at Elder Jiang’s lips, laced with disappointment. “Then it seems we can only resign ourselves to being enslaved by the Shen Empire. I doubt anyone else but you would be capable of even attempting it.”
An oppressive silence fell between them as they continued on their way. Feng Fan’s mind raced, his thoughts fixating on the person Prince Shen Yi was so desperate to find. An uneasy premonition took root in his chest, like an icy hand clutching his heart.
‘Could it be… that the person he’s looking for is me?’ Feng Fan’s mind reeled with the possibility. ‘Someone capable of trapping so many experts in an Immortal-Tier Array but not being able to kill them outright… that doesn’t add up. Unless… he wasn’t the one who created the array. What if it was given to him by something else… like a system?’
His eyes widened as realization dawned on him. ‘Damn it. If that guy has a system, doesn’t that mean he is controlled by the same people who ordered Hou Mengyao to kill me during the Young Generation Competition? The moment he breaks through to Immortal Ascension, it won’t matter where I hide on the Black Turtle Continent… he’ll find me, and I’ll be dead!’
A cold sweat broke out on Feng Fan’s forehead as dread coursed through his veins. If his guess was right, he wasn’t just dealing with a powerful cultivator—he was up against another system user. One who had already set his sights on him.
A sad, almost bitter smile tugged at Feng Fan’s lips as he pondered his predicament.
‘Why won’t people let me cultivate in peace? Always forcing me to make a move…’
He couldn’t help but feel a sense of helplessness wash over him. All he wanted was to focus on his path, to deepen his cultivation without unnecessary distractions, but fate seemed determined to throw him into one chaotic situation after another.
Whether he liked it or not, if his guess was right, he had only two choices left.
The first was to cultivate faster than Shen Yi and reach a level of power that would allow him to fight back. The second was to venture to the Azure Dragon Continent and break the Immortal-Tier array that held the Black Turtle Continent’s strongest cultivators captive.
Only by freeing them could he hope to stand a chance against Shen Yi and his empire.
‘Fuck… no matter how much I think about it, it’s a dead end!’ Feng Fan clenched his fists tightly.
He wasn’t a fool—he knew that trying to go from his current realm to the Transcending Tribulation Realm before Shen Yi broke through to Immortal Ascension was nothing short of a pipe dream. There was a gap of four entire realms between them.
Then, he made a decision.
‘I, Feng Fan, am a man of honor who values friendship. Since the Dao Seeking School and Black Turtle Sect have treated me well, I will venture into the depths of the enemy lines to save them! No matter the risks, I refuse to abandon those who have helped me!’
He raised his head, eyes blazing with fake resolve. ‘If I have to take on an entire empire to uphold my principles, then so be it. After all, a cultivator on the righteous path like me always acts in the face of injustice!’
A self-satisfied smirk appeared on Feng Fan’s face as he convinced himself that his decision was purely altruistic. ‘Yeah, that’s right. I’m not doing this to save my own skin. It’s for the greater good. The world needs heroes like me, after all.’
