Chapter 36: Rescue Mission (3)
Nanzhi changed into an inflatable boat again and rowed slowly and as she approached the gate, she saw this design of flood barriers online. It can block at least two meters of flood water.
But the water level was already climbing on the limits of barriers. It was just a matter of a few hours before it completely swallow those barriers.
Nanzhi quickly rowed her way onto the barrier.
Once she reached it, she dragged the boat over, deflated it and split the paddle and tied it securely on her back. She then threw a rope over the locked gate to climb up.
The barrier may have block the flood from the outside but inside the campus water level is already at her thighs due to the heavy rain.
Because the classes were suspended, the buildings were empty except for the security guards doing routine check, utility workers checking the locks of the rooms and guarding the water pumps, and a few teachers.
A security team spotted Nanzhi and quickly walked in the water to question her.
Because of her current attire, she was very suspicious.
“What are you doing trespassing in the school?!”
Looking at the dozens of buildings, Nanzhi spoke, “I’m looking for Professor Zhang Heng. Do you know where is the teacher’s building is?”
The security guard knew Professor Zhang Heng but in the past few days there have been plenty of people asking the same thing. It stressed the professor.
The principal told him not to entertain any guests per the professor’s request.
Rumble—
As he was about to ask the strange person to leave, there was a loud thundering noise coming from outside.
Nanzhi and the security guard saw large flow of debris made of trees and mud hitting the flood barriers causing it to tilt and ultimately topple like dominos.
Before they knew it, flood water rushed in like bullet train.
“This…” The security guard was stunned.
Without hesitation, Nanzhi quickly swam to the nearest four-story building which is the College of Liberal Arts building.
Her limbs were already strengthened and the guard behind couldn’t catch up to her speed. Nanzhi reached the building and quickly headed for the stairs.
The guard behind her was too slow and couldn’t reach it on time. However, before he was swept away, a hand grabbed him by his collar and pulled him in.
Nanzhi came back with a rope tied on her waist. “Hold on.”
On the balcony of the third floor, the security guard’s eyes became red as he looked at dark waters rushed in.
There was no doubt if he was swept away, he’ll be dead.
Turning to Nanzhi, he bowed and said in gratitude, “Thank…thank you just now.” He was still shaking, thinking about it.
Nanzhi nodded. She wanted to test something. Thankfully, the system didn’t disappoint her.

She looked at the water level. It was on the half of the second floor. The university was built on a plain and there was gorge nearby. Thus, it was no surprising for this to happen.
“Now call you tell me where the teacher building is?” Nanzhi didn’t waste time. It was already two in the afternoon and she needs to spend more than two hours to return home.
The security guard was no longer guarded against her. He quickly pointed at a certain direction. “You need to pass the sports field and gymnasium first before reaching the Science and Technology building. The dormitory is behind it.”
After getting her answer, she untied the inflatable boat and took out a small hand-operated machine from her back pack and started pumping air into it.
“Let me do it for you.” The security guard offered his help to which Nanzhi didn’t refuse. In the meantime, she stood up and looked outside.
Suddenly, Nanzhi saw a lot of floating plastic and metal boxes mixed in with the debris. In Nanzhi’s point of view there was a lot of floating prompts. So even though her eyes couldn’t see that far away, she knew what some of the things are.
The expression on her face grew grim.

Professor Zhang Heng was assigned a room in second floor of the Teacher’s Dormitory Building together with his assistant.
Because there was a public kitchen in the third floor of the building, the teachers crowded there sharing their food.
The table was currently serving a sumptuous breakfast of two kinds of soup, three side dishes, and two types of meat dishes.
Zhang Heng as the guest was invited to sit down.
Most of the teachers staying in the dormitory were from the Science and Technology Department and their homes were not in the city and thus they stayed in the dormitory buildings.
Professor Zhang Heng was quite famous in this circle thus they struck a conversation him about his recent studies.
But Professor Zhang Heng’s attention was on the flood outside. His brows were twitching since this morning. Whenever it does, it means that something bad was about to happen.
“Has anybody contacted a rescue team yet?”
One of the teachers spoke, “Professor Zhang, you don’t need to worry about the flood. It will only probably reach the first floor and the rain will calm down soon—”
In the midst of their conversation, there was a loud deafening roar followed by a shout.
“The flood! The flood is rushing in!” The utility assigned to the building run to the private kitchen, panting.
Professor Zhang and the five other teachers were stunned and immediately gathered in the walkway, watching in shock as the dark murky water rushing in. It destroyed everything on its path except for the buildings.
It only showed signs of stopping when the entire second floor is flooded. Everyone was panicking and they picked up their phones to try to call the police or fire station but the network was already cut off.
The one who reassured Professor Zhang Heng before swallowed back his words. His previous calmness can no longer be seen.
But it seems the flood was not the only thing they need to wary of.
Hiss—
Everyone heard it and turned their heads to the direction of the stairs and what they saw made their eyes almost popped out of their sockets.
“Quickly run inside!” Professor Zhang shouted.
