Chapter 50: The Truth about the Accident
Among the residents, there was a nurse.
For the past few days, the residents that experienced stomach aches, fever, wounds infections and other sickness had visited him for treatment and consultation in exchange for supplies.
Auntie Yang’s husband had also visited him when Dan Dan got sick but wasn’t able to provide medicine after his medicine kit run out.
He was often out of town because he was also pursuing his doctorate degree at the same time.
He only returned to this place because of the work suspension, that’s why his preparation for the typhoon was barely minimal but because of his skills he was able to survive until now.
The residents had called him this morning because of a problem. They found someone dead. It was Sun He.
There was a lingering fear in the hearts of those who had beaten Sun He yesterday.
Now that he’s dead, if after the disaster someone reported it, will they get arrested?
But after the nurse had examined Sun He’s corpse and concluded that Sun He’s cause of death was from hypovolemic shock from excessive bleeding due to multiple severe bite wounds, their worries dispersed.
“The bite wounds seemed to be from big rats.”
Fear grew on the residents’ expression.
With no source stable food for the rats, these desperate rodents are scavengers too and will be attracted by the smell human blood and target carrion.
The nurse and doctorate undergraduate couldn’t conduct a deep medical post-mortem as he didn’t have the tools and energy to do so.
This decision prevented him from discovering the hidden truth the bite wounds were trying to cover up.
At the back, Nanzhi left after listening to the nurse’s words.
Auntie Qi and the other prisoners who heard the nurse’s medical analysis quickly begged for the residents to change their room.
The sanitation of the building was already poor and to prevent the spread of another disease, the nurse suggested disposing of Sun He’s body.
In the open window of the stairs leading to the 20th floor, Nanzhi heard a splash.
She looked outside and saw a small wooden raft, placed on top of it was something wrapped with several layers of white blanket, drifting in the flood water.
The residents used long thick branches to push the raft away.
Nanzhi stared at it a little longer before lifting her steps as she returned to her unit.
The wooden raft was washed away and as it reached a submerged ranch, four miles from the Empire building, the wooden raft suddenly sunk into the water.
After a minute, only the broken parts of the wooden raft resurfaced.
When Nanzhi returned to her unit, she sat down the sofa and stared at the family photo on the frame.
Last night, Sun He couldn’t endure the agonizing torture and confessed.
It was only she came to know that the man that Lan Yanxi had been seeing was Lu Chengyu.
The two had Sun He as their son.
A day before the car crash accident, Lan Yanxi had actually given her mother a call, asking her to drive to Pearl City because she was going was going to tell her mother about an important matter.
In regards to this, Sun He didn’t know the details and no matter how she tortured him, even at the end he only said that he absolutely had no idea.
At the day of the car accident, Nanzhi had her day off.

Her parents only said that they were going to meet a friend and would come back in the evening.
Nanzhi wanted to go with them but since she was mentally and physically exhausted from the recent client requesting an audit on their business merger to be completed on a tight deadline, her body badly needed to rest.
“Darling, I know you’re tired, just rest at home. Mommy won’t be gone for too long. I already cooked a pot of your favourite beef stew with potatoes and left it inside the fridge. When you feel hungry, you can just heat it up.”
“We will be back soon. Don’t stay up too late and go to bed early. On the weekends, I’ll take you to a new fishing spot, the neighbour said that they caught a large fish…”
“You always talk about that but never caught anything.” Lu Nanzhi lightly laughed.
“This girl! I wasn’t on my best condition. I’ll show you my true skills next time.”
Nanzhi smiled.
“Enough Dear, we are going to be late.”
“Be careful on the road.”
His father was worried about her mother and accompanied her and that’s the last time she ever got to see them alive because at dawn, police officers knocked on her door and delivered the devastating news.
Nanzhi didn’t know how much she cried at that time but it was probably to the point that her eyes could no longer shed tears.
Having known of the Patriarch Lu’s dying will, Lu Chengyu with the cooperation of Lan Yanxi had hired someone to tamper with the car leading to the breaks malfunctioning at the last minute. It swerved uncontrollably hitting the road barricade.
Both her parents died on the spot.
The police officers didn’t investigate as the car crash was perfectly covered up as an accident.
Now, she would no longer able to taste that beef stew with potatoes again or hear fishing stories at night.
Nanzhi withdrew her eyes from the photo and looked at the virtual map.
Her eyes glided over the high-rise tourist hotels overlooking a large orchard and ranch.
Yan Lanxi, you better be alive until I come for you.
The brewing undercurrent waves of emotions in her eyes surged like a giant tide.
One could hear the clattering sounds of something shattering inside the room.
