Chapter 54: On the Road
Late in the morning, the married couple living in Unit 2101 had just finished their preparation for their trip to the military base, the closest settlement.

The moment Auntie Yang opened the door, she saw a box on her door and there was a note on top that says ‘It’s for the kitchen knife’.

She immediately knew who it was from. The box was very heavy.

She looked at the direction of the 2103, knocked, but no one answered for fifteen minutes.

Nanzhi was tactful and she always answers the door. Auntie Yang knew that she probably left.

Her husband asked her what she doing. Auntie Yang showed him the box. The two opened it and found it had a medicine kit, compass, bottles of water, fire starter, MREs, and etc.

But what Auntie Yang’s husband liked the most was the folded detailed drawn map that shows the available routes to the military bases. It also contained notes like—landslide or bridge collapse and the likes.

Auntie Yang’s husband was amazed.

It turns out she doesn’t need their help at all.

Nanzhi’s destination is in the opposite direction of military base. The tourist hotel was near Qianhe Mountain.

To get there, she needs to pass by the airport, a lake and several villages.

Nanzhi chose the routes which had a bank and jewellery shops.

But what she was after the most was the inventory of the Jade Dragon. One of their subsidiary company is in the city proper. After this mission, she will check that place.

She tried to find jades in the villas outside the community and the only thing she found was a safe stuck under the rubbles of a collapse wall. It was full of diamond jewelleries and cash.

It was wasted trip.

Nanzhi didn’t attempt to search the other villas.

In every 50 meters, two to three dead bodies or severed parts of dead human bodies along with the animal carcasses could be seen.

She was in the villa compound outside the suburban community, there were survivors here too and mostly searching in the debris for some food but they gave up once they saw none.

They saw Nanzhi but once they saw the bolo hanging on her waist, they avoided her.

Nanzhi used the sharp end of the long harpoon to hook the torn tarpaulins, canvas tent, or anything to cover the dead bodies.

While the chances of contracting airborne diseases from exposed corpses is very low, if left to rot, it will become a breeding ground for rodents and wild animals which will let them develops rabies.

She could already spot flies gathering in the large numbers above a carcass of dog five meters ahead.

She took out a can spray of pesticide and killed the flies but more came and she eventually got exhausted.

When she reached the highway, it was already the middle of the day, the sun was at its highest, the hottest time. The temperature had risen to 39 degree celcius.

Sweat dribbled from Nanzhi’s scalp to her neck.

Looking for a place to stop, she saw a three-story building and a gas station, nobody was around.

The fuel dispensers and gas pumps are destroyed.

She checked the fuel tanks hidden underneath and found 2 metric tons of it. Nanzhi collected them into her space.

Inside the shop, she was also able to find dozens of 5L diesel barrels and barrels of motor oil. She also collected them into her space.

After it, she went to take a short break in the three-story building. She cleaned a spot and washed her hands before devouring the pan fried buns.

While at it, she looked at the virtual map.

“System, do you know what the next disaster will be? Is it Heat Wave and drought?”

The sun is scorching that it’s highly possible.

The present had deviated so much that she cannot rely on her past experience anymore.

It was shorter that she expected. Wasn’t it supposed to be a minimum of 10 days?

And the Tourist Hotel is still 7 miles away!

Nanzhi accelerated her eating speed and hit the road again.

She pulled out a motorcycle from her inventory this time and started driving down the highway heading to the airport.

As she continued her journey, she noticed an odd thing.

Both sides of the road at least 7 to 8 high-rise commercial buildings more compared to the villa compound outside of the suburban community.

There should be survivors but she couldn’t sense a single presence and even there’s not a trace of rats or mice!

What’s more worrying is the scent of decay is only faint.

Nanzhi can confirm this as she lowered her mask and blew the cotton off her nostrils.

That strangeness continued for twenty minutes until she spotted long trail of blood on the road as if there was something injured dragged towards inside the buildings and shops.

It was not the only one, more trails appeared as her wheels covered more distance and the blood trail seemed to be freshly made as some of it still wet!

First rule of survival: Curiosity kills the cat.

Nanzhi tear off her eyes from this abnormality, didn’t bother to investigate it and stepped on the pedal. The motorcycle drove the fastest speed.

Right after she passed by the buildings, there was a loud eerie animalistic noises coming from behind her and dozens of shadows emerged from the buildings and shops, attracted by her scent.

Once they saw Nanzhi, it was as if they saw a luxurious buffet, they chased after the motorcycle, running to their maximum speed.

Sensing a lot of presences behind, Nanzhi looked at the side mirrors to see what they were.

Her eyes shook, seeing the floating prompts.
