Chapter 82: Recollecting the Past (1)
The crackle of the fire in the fireplace woke up Lin Weihao.
He found himself in a small, warm and clean room filled with white and grey wolf pelts. Some of them have been laid on the floor, a few hang near the fireplace to dry and rest were sewed into coats.
The beddings, pillows, and blanket on him were also made of wolf pelts.
He tried to sit up and the deep wound on his abdomen throbbed painfully. Lin Weihao raised the blankets and noticed the bandage dressings.
Tapping footsteps coming from the door located at the foot of his bed entered his ears.
The door swung opened and a person wrapped in thick layers of coat made of the wolf pelt and snow came in.
When the person took off her hat, Lin Weihao confirmed it was a woman.
Seemingly sensing his probing eyes, the woman spoke. “There’s a cup of hot water on the cupboard. Help yourself.”
Lin Weihao spun his head to the cupboard on his right and there was a pink thermos and a small ceramic cup.
While his eyes stayed on the cup, the woman approached him and placed a wooden bowl filled with soup. Pieces of meat could be seen floating on top.
With the short distance between them, he can finally see her features clearly. His gaze was drawn to her sharp, hazelnut nut eyes.
“It’s wolf soup. Drink it while it’s hot.”
There’s always this survivor’s guilt that would haunt survivors into depression and it also struck Lin Weihao’s chord. He couldn’t bring himself to drink water or eat or at all.
“You don’t want to eat? Suit yourself.” The woman didn’t insist and this continue for days.
“Still not eating? Then, an extra portion for me.”
“You are like a young master in those troublesome novels that is difficult to serve.”
“Ah. If only I can find beef and potatoes. I would have cook them into beef stew.”
“Fine, domineering CEO, I’m sorry that I can’t prepare your caviar.”
“Hey, if you want to die, don’t do it in my bed and go outside on your own.”
The woman only spoke to him whenever it was meal time and some of the sentences she said made him want to vomit blood.
Lin Weihao finally couldn’t take it anymore and he asked, “Why did you save me? You could just leave me there to die.”
The woman didn’t even hide her surprised expression.
“Oh, you can hear me and talk too.”
Lin Weihao didn’t know how to feel in that moment but for a short time, he forgot about the bitter memories because of her.
The woman clicked her tongue before turning around to face the fireplace. Her hands added more firewood into the fireplace.
She rubbed her hands and warmed them near the fire before speaking, “I don’t know but it must be because I’m starting to hallucinate. I thought I saw a human the other day but when I brought him back, it was actually a log. I thought you’re going to be another log but it turns out your real human.”
Lin Weihao was silent. He couldn’t find a connection between her hallucination and the reason for saving him.
To his stunned expression, the woman squeezed herself onto the small bed.
Her bum slowly pushed Lin Weihao to the wall.
“Now that you seem to be recovering, make space for me. The floor is cold despite the layers of wolf pelts.”

Lin Weihao was taken aback and his cheeks grew hot. He coughed and reminded her, “You’re a woman and I’m a man. We cannot sleep in the same bed unless we’re married.”
The woman immediately faced him, rolled her eyes and replied, “Whatever dream you have last night, it’s better to wake up. You’re not a wealthy young master in an ancient era anymore.”
There had never been someone who talks to him that way and he only said that out of concern.
Although Lin Weihao was frustrated, he just turned to his side and didn’t pay attention to her anymore.
For her to be still lively should mean her loved ones are still alive, unlike him. The bad memories surged a giant tide and its overwhelming weight made Lin Weihao to gradually fell asleep with tremendous guilt in his heart.
In the middle of the night, his stomach started hurting making him unable to sleep anymore.
He opened his eyes and coincidentally heard sounds, right next to his ears.
It was someone’s cries.
“Hic…Hic…”
The woman beside him was crying in her sleep.
“Hey?”
“Hey!”
“Are you alright?” He tapped her shoulders trying to wake her up but the woman didn’t wake up at all and continued to make crying sounds.
Startled, Lin Weihao sat up with difficulty and checked her by turning her over so she would faced him.
This made her hands that were crossed across her chest, dropped to her side and a crumpled paper slid and landed on the back of Lin Weihao’s left hand.
He picked it up and stretched it under the burning candle next to the thermos on the cupboard. It was actually a family photo of three people.
The condition of the photo was not good. There were round blurry spots that seem to be washed away and it had folded marks on the center and with little tug, it would probably tear.
Her family?
“Mom, Dad, why didn’t you just take me with you that day and let me die, too? I would have been spared from this misery.”
Lin Weihao’s expression became solemn. He was actually wrong.
A person in misery finds company in people who are going through the same situation as them.
Lin Weihao knew that feeling. He returned the photo and tucked the woman comfortably inside the blanket.
In the morning, he pretended nothing happened last night. When he saw the woman cooking soup near the fireplace, he pushed himself to sit up and introduced himself, “Lin Weihao.”
The woman raised her brows. She stopped stirring the soup, slowly spun her head towards him, returned the courtesy after three beats later, appearing surprised by behavior.
“Lu Nanzhi.”
