Chapter 90: The Sudden Drizzle and Fog
Nanzhi lifted her line of vision to the sky.
Her eyes congealed with puzzlement when she noticed that the once clear sky was now covered with densely packed white clouds.
There was still more than half an hour for the sun to set.
She swore that she could still see the sun ten minutes ago.
“Why did it suddenly became cold?” Yu Baoyin rubbed her arms and pressed herself to the Feng Ran’s back trying to rub and absorb some warmth.
Feng Ran felt something soft and his face tinted with red shade. He got distracted.
The motorcycle’s tires burst after getting punctured by large nails.
It swerved uncontrollably, almost hitting Lin Weihao’s motorcycle in front.
Lin Weihao drove to the side, to avoid the collision and so as BingWen.
“Damn it!” Feng Ran scolded himself.
“Hey! Hey! Stop! Stop!” Yu Baoyin was shocked and quickly yelled in Feng Ran’s ears like a siren.
“Don’t shout in my ears!” Feng Ran quickly regained control.
Nanzhi immediately used her telekinesis to help Feng Ran break on time by putting pressure on the lever and the foot break.
Thankfully, no accident occurred but Yu Baoyin was a bit traumatized.
“Next time, I’ll drive and you ride on the back!”
Feng Ran frowned and said, “It’s not my fault. It’s because you….you…” He couldn’t continue the rest of his words because it was inappropriate but his eyes lingered on Yu Baoyin’s front and the blush on his cheeks became even more noticeable.
Yu Baoyin caught on that and her nose flared. She covered her chest. “What are you looking at?”
“Hey whatever you’re thinking is not like that!” Realizing his behavior was rougish and sensing Hei Qian’s suspicions sidelong glance, Feng Ran quickly defended himself.
Nanzhi looked at the broken tires and was disappointed that they were not design as run flat tires.
She looked at the Virtual Map. The place where they stopped was at the edge of the villa community, just a quarter of a mile from the Empire Building.
If they travelled on foot, perhaps they can still reached it before nightfall.
It’s much safer to rest for the night there.
Lin Weihao and Bingwen looked at the tires.
Suddenly, Nanzhi felt something cold drop on her forehead.
She looked up and saw the tiny drizzles of rain.
There was a small rain shower and the temperature in the surroundings became chillier.
Rain again? But why does it feel like ice water?
Startled, Nanzhi took out a temperature sensor from her personal inventory using her bag as a cover. She turned around and pointed the sensor away from herself.
The temperature on the screen settled at 15 degree Celsius.
Her heart skipped a beat.
Follow new episodes on the "N0vel1st.c0m".
She took out rain coats from her bag and distributed each to everyone.
Yu Baoyin’s eyes lit up.
Out of the people, her attire was worst in terms of cold proof qualities, therefore when the five only felt little cold, she was already trembling.
She quickly wore the rain coat but not before saying, “Sister Nan! Why are so prepared? I’m beginning to think you have some foresight ability!” The rain coat dispersed a bit of the coldness, making Yu Baoyinhappy.
Nanzhi’s eyes flickered but she didn’t say anything.
During the typhoon, the power plants including the ones that burn on fossil fuels to produce electricity might be destroyed.
Their chemical waste or dangerous elements might be discharged to the bodies of water and in the air.
These chemicals compounds were not absorbed during the Super Typhoon until after the sun showed and the water turned into vapors.
She didn’t know if this rain is mixed with contaminants or had become acidic. It’s better to be careful.
Fortunately, it’s not an acid rain or else it will be more troublesome.
“Brother Lin, do you want me to repair it now?” Bingwen asked.
Lin Weihao had decided not to repair the motorcycle anymore.
Nanzhi stored the abandoned motorcycle while everyone else was busy.
In the next ride, Yu Baoyin finally got her wish and she was able to ride with Lu Nanzhi.
“Sister Nan, why are you so soft?”
“Sister Nan, why do you smell like herbs?”
“Sister Nan, your hair looks so shiny and silky. How are you maintaining it?”
“Sister Nan, can I rest my chin on your shoulder?”
Even if it just a girl, a certain someone was still full of vinegar.
Lin Weihao: That’s my wife. Only he can sleep on her shoulder.
In another 30 minutes, they arrived on the block where the Empire Building was.
The current time is only 5: 42 in the afternoon but it was already dark.
Coupled with the moonless sky, it was hard to see anything.
The one providing them light were from the motorcycles and the portable flash lights.
The silence was eerie and that sticky suffocating smell was still hanging in the air making it very uncomfortable despite their noses were covered with face masks.
Nanzhi planned to clean the area and burned the corpses tomorrow morning.
But for now, because the road couldn’t be drive on the motorcycle anymore, they had to get off and cleaned a portion of the road for the motorcycle to pass.
Nanzhi was walked way ahead and used her space to clean the debris in the surroundings faster.
Up to this moment, the rain showers still continued and although they were just drizzles, a thin grey mist formed in the surroundings, making it less visible.
Nanzhi became even wary.
After spending another twenty minutes on the road, they finally reached the Empire Building.
In front of the Empire Building were another resident building and dormitory building, Nanzhi felt gazes on her coming from those directions.
She spun her head and saw some of outlines of humans on the balconies.
“Let’s get inside.” She said before tearing her eyes away.
“Sister Nan, is there where we’ll stay for the night?” Yu Baoyin asked.
Nanzhi nodded.
Her eyes examining the floors and doors of the unit if there are traces of looting in the building.
There were fresh muddy shoe prints around but the trail end at the 15th floor. Nanzhi became vigilant.
Lin Weihao also noticed these.
The group split and patrolled the building first of any survivors but apart from traces of bonfire, cigarettes’ fag-ends, and trashes in some rooms, some non-mutated rodents, they didn’t meet another survivor.
The group climbed the stairs to the 21st floor afterwards.
Feng Ran and Yu Baoyin were panting by the end. Their legs were shaking but once they saw a clean apartment unit, their exhaustion disappeared.
However before going in, they discarded their dirty boots and wiped themselves clean and placed then inside plastic bags.
Nanzhi looked at the thick anti-theft door. It may have additional scratches but luckily her unit wasn’t ransacked.
The only damaged was the tiny peephole.
Nanzhi sensed a presence on her back. Two calloused hands squeezed her arms gently.
It was Lin Weihao and he said something in a voice full of guilt, “It’s my men’s fault. They destroyed your door’s peek hole. I’ll get it repaired soon as I can but you can punish me if you want.”
“As long as you repair it, then it’s alright.” Nanzhi replied without a hint of anger.
Lin Weihao felt he had escaped a tribulation. After Nanzhi went inside, he raised his sleeves and wiped off the sweat that gathered in his forehead.
Good thing, he was not punished to sleep outside.
Nanzhi turned on the generator.
The lights were turned on and everyone found a comfortable place to sit in the living room.
Nanzhi went to her bedroom first, cleaned herself and changed into a warmer set of cloth before going to the bathroom to place buckets of water on the floor and returning to the living room with extra clothes in her hand.
“Thank you Sister Nan! Sister Nan, is this your house.” Yu Baoyin asked.
“Yes.” Nanzhi said.
“Oh! I’m Sister Nan’s house!” She was very excited and quickly looked around.
“If you want to take a bath, there is still water in the bathroom but the drains are not working, you will have to throw away the dirty water outside.”
It’s still unsafe to unclog the drains. Those rodents will come back.
“If you want hot water, the LPG tank is still filled. You can boil water in the stove.”
Each of them hadn’t taken a proper bath for days and even she felt very uncomfortable.
“Call me if you need anything else. I will cook dinner first.” Nanzhi tied the apron around her waist and started taking out dehydrated vegetables, dehydrated fruits, jars of pickled vegetable, eggs, dried jerky, rice, vermicelli noodles, and spices from the cabinet pantry.
Yu Baoyin, Feng Ran, Hei Qian, and Bingwen saw the ingredients and became excited for dinner. They carried the buckets outside.
Lin Weihao stayed and helped Nanzhi cooked.
Although his actions were clumsy, Nanzhi didn’t say anything and even helped him.
Feeling the warm and delicate pair of hands patiently guiding his, Lin Weihao felt as if he had gone back to those days in his first life.
His heart was at peace.
But not for long.
The satellite phone in his pockets vibrated.
He answered it and after listening to the report of the person in the other line,he turned around and said something to Nanzhi.
Two minutes later, in the balcony of the unit 2104, Lin Weihao and Lu Nanzhi observed the dense fog was forming outside.
