Chapter 327: Inheritance (3)
Jasmine’s mask of composure slipped for a microsecond.

She meets the requirement. And she knows it.

“I see.” Her voice carried forced neutrality. “And you think I might qualify?”

Dancing around the truth. How cute of you, Jasmine.

Arthur smiled. “I think you’re more than you appear to be. In this world, that usually means hidden strength.”

Mayor Richards watched the exchange with growing confusion.

Despite their little bickering, the Mayor knew one thing.

She’s important to him.

Jasmine looked at the massive tree. Her healing abilities were her most carefully guarded secret.

Revealing them meant exposing vulnerabilities she’d spent years concealing.

But with the potential rewards…I can finally…perhaps…

“If I attempt this trial,” she said finally, “what happens if I fail?”

Arthur’s expression softened slightly. “Nothing harmful. The guardian simply denies access.”

At least that’s what happened to me.

“And if I succeed?”

“Then you gain power that could help save thousands of lives and, most importantly, help you achieve what you truly desire.”

Arthur wasn’t trying to make everybody around him a hero. Whilst saving thousands of lives was a good thing.

He couldn’t and didn’t want to make everyone around him discard their desires and become heroes.

Jasmine closed her eyes, internal debate playing across her features. When she opened them again, resolution had replaced uncertainty.

“Very well. I’ll attempt your trial.”

Good.

“Thank you,” Arthur smiled, and it made Jasmine’s heart skip a beat for a second.

She nodded, although she wasn’t sure why he thanked her.

Arthur nodded to Mayor Richards, who stepped forward towards the tree of life.

The ancient syllables began flowing from his lips once again.

“Vel’tar neth korvain, sil’thara mor ethaine, qua’dun vel mor kethul’ras.”

The familiar aperture opened, releasing scanning energies that washed over Jasmine with thorough intensity. This time, the examination lasted longer, delving deeper into her capabilities, measuring her potential.

Jasmine stood motionless as invisible forces probed her very essence. Her face remained composed, but Arthur caught the slight tension around her eyes.

The scanning stopped.

Silence stretched across the clearing, heavy with anticipation.

Then the guardian’s voice emerged, clear and decisive:

“Access Accepted.”

She has a powerful talent…As expected.

The tree trunk began shifting with sounds like grinding stone and flowing water. Bark flowed like liquid, revealing chambers hidden within the ancient wood.

Warm golden light spilt from the opening, carrying scents of growing things and concentrated magic.

A proper inheritance chamber. Impressive.

But as the transformation was completed, the guardian’s voice returned with a restriction.

“However, only the lady may enter alone. The inheritance is meant for one inheritor at a time.”

Arthur raised an eyebrow but didn’t protest. Protector inheritances often contained sensitive information or dangerous trials. Allowing multiple people access could compromise the testing process, which would disqualify Jasmine, and that was something he did not want.

Jasmine studied the glowing entrance with mixture of anticipation and concern. “You’re certain this is safe?”

“Protector inheritances don’t harm worthy candidates,” Arthur assured her. “The worst outcome is failure to claim the legacy.”

She nodded and stepped toward the threshold. Warm light embraced her, making her blonde hair seem to glow with inner fire.

“If I don’t return within a reasonable time,” she said over her shoulder, “assume something went wrong.”

“You’ll be fine. You’re stronger than you pretend to be.”

Before she moved on, Arthur stopped her.

“Wait. I almost forgot to give you this.” He said, taking out a few very rare items and an epic bracelet.

Jasmine’s eyes widened at the unexpected gift that Arthur was giving her.

“This…is this really for me? It’s too much!”

Arthur nodded with a smile. “You need to be at your best when the trial starts. Take these with you, you will need them.”

Within a moment. Jasmine wore the very-rare set and had an epic bracelet around her wrist. She looked like a very elegant mage.

The entrance sealed behind her.

Now we wait.

Mayor Richards approached cautiously. “How long do these trials typically last?”

“Depends on the inheritance.” Arthur settled against a nearby wall

…

Jasmine stepped across the threshold into a world that defied comprehension.

The chamber stretched impossibly wide, its walls carved from living wood that pulsed with veins of golden sap. Crystalline formations jutted from the curved ceiling, each one humming with frequencies that made her blood stir restlessly beneath her skin.

This place… It’s alive.

Warmth enveloped her like a gentle tide, carrying scents of medicinal herbs and something indefinable—the essence of thousands of lives saved, pain banished, hope restored.

A voice emerged from the heart of the chamber, it was the same voice that spoke to Arthur before.

“Welcome, potential heir of Her Highness, the Queen of Healing Sylvia.”

Potential heir…

Before Jasmine stood a staff unlike anything she’d encountered before. Eight feet of pristine white wood spiraled upward, crowned with a crystal that contained swirling galaxies of healing light. Runes flowed along its length like living script, rearranging themselves as she watched.

“I am the Guardian of this sacred space,” the staff continued. “I have waited too long for one who might prove worthy of my mistress’s legacy.”

Jasmine approached with careful steps. Each footfall echoed strangely, as if the chamber existed in multiple places simultaneously.

“What must I do?”

“Three trials await you, child. The first will test your understanding. The second, your compassion. The third…” The staff paused meaningfully. “The third depends entirely on who you choose to become.”

What does that mean? Why is this staff being so…dramatic?

“You will now enter the first stage. Observe. Learn. Prove that Sylvia’s knowledge can live within you.”

The chamber dissolved.

Jasmine found herself standing in a marble hall filled with afternoon sunlight.

Tapestries depicting healing herbs lined the walls, while the scent of all kinds drifted through open windows.

Beautiful. Peaceful. Everything a healing sanctuary should be.

Movement caught her attention.

A woman walked across the polished floor with grace that spoke of nobility born rather than learned. Her auburn hair fell in elegant waves past her shoulders, held back by a simple silver circlet.

The white robes she wore seemed to glow with inner light.
