Chapter 275: A Memory Problem
Hans gazed out the window of the plane as he saw the buildings in the distance become smaller, he sighed out loud, but no one aside from Caelan heard him.

A voice in his head… Caelan’s voice spoke to him.

“Family… can be pretty troublesome at times”

“You’re right”

Hans didn’t have anything to say, he just wanted a bit of time to think about everything.

His worries had grown exponentially ever since he returned to Italy…

If he ever managed to wake his mother up… how could she tell her about him killing her sister? How could he confess what he saw?… what he did…

‘Who cares…’

He thought as he retracted his seat to lay down on it as if it were a bed…

‘I will only be able to care about those things when mother’s back… so let’s think about that first’

Another thing had been on his mind for a while… he was dubious… should he recruit his grandfather to aid him in the fight against the abyssal snake? Or should he handle it alone?’

This question had found an answer an hour earlier… he decided not to drag the old man into it… not only because he had already fought enough, but also because he would probably not be as useful as he was when he fought criminals when they would have to go against the snake…

‘Ugh….’

Hans was pondering the matter when something came to his mind….

Snake…

Ember?!’

“Damn it!”

He had… forgotten about Ember.

In the meantime… somewhere in Greece…

A beautiful blonde woman was still rolling in her bed sleeping…

She felt a slightly cold touch on her neck but her eyes still didn’t open, her muffled voice came out of her mouth and filtered through the pillow as she said:

“Come on just a few more minutes… leave me alone”

However, the touch didn’t disappear… it enlarged, reaching the side of her neck and even the front before returning to the back but from the other side…

Someone had their cold hands around her neck, and it almost felt relieving, as if she had put on a cold chain…

But this chain seemed to have some problems… It felt kind of… Tight… It was almost…. No, not almost… It was squeezing her neck.

In just a few seconds, the comforting cooling touch of this ‘necklace’, became an uncomfortable and dangerous lace strapped around her neck…

Panicking and gasping for air, the woman woke up and immediately reached her neck with her hands, ready to take off of her whatever was causing this disturbance but…

It wasn’t there anymore… she felt good, and it was once again easy to breathe.

But it wasn’t just a hallucination…

And proving that wasn’t only her heavy and hastened breathing, but also a little white beast wrapped around the woman’s body.

Just in front of her face… a pure white snake stared into her eyes with an innocent expression on its face.

One…. Two…

And…

“Aaaahh!!”

The woman grabbed the beast and threw it away as she backed up by pushing her body with her arms.

She was now beside the door with her arms behind her back as she laid her hands and her butt on the cold marble floor.

A rush of adrenaline had given her the strength to let out an incredibly loud and disturbing scream, and the same strength had allowed her to back up so quickly.

She watched the white animal as it grappled onto a lamp in the opposite corner of the room and slithered down on the floor before slowly making its way back to her.

She raised her arms as if she were about to throw hands with the snake, perceiving the animal as a threat.

But before the little curious reptile could even come any closer to her, the woman jumped out of the room and slammed the door.

Behind that door, the woman lay on the wall with her two arms as she rested her head on those… she panted and sweated as a question continuously resounded in her mind…

‘What… pant… pant… what the hell is a snake doing in my house?’

‘And also…. Why the fuck is it so gorgeous?!’

The snake’s scales were albino white, and the contrast with everything that was around it made it look majestic.

Almost divine.

But… It was still a snake and not a normal one at that… It had mana… A snake with mana… What kind of joke was that?!

Scared out of her wits… the woman contacted the association and asked for someone who would assist her in taking out the snake…

In the meantime, Ember was closed inside the room…

Her thoughts went something along the lines of:

“What a strange human….”

She had ended up there not by coincidence… she had been following Hans’s smell ever since she woke up in a strange place underground… she followed that smell for hours, but she still couldn’t find a single hint of his mana…

Where could he have gone?…

Scared of staying alone…

The little slithering creature carried on, following the only trace she had of her friend…

Se followed Hans’s smell for a long time until she finally reached a house…. She waited… and waited… and waited, but the more time passed, the more Hans’s smell seemed to be dissipating.

And so, she decided to find another way in… from the ventilation system….

She broke a couple of fans with her pretty sturdy body and made her way into the house.

As she followed the smell, she was led up to the second floor, where she found a single woman lying on her bed sleeping soundly.

While Hans wasn’t there, Ember hoped that someone who had something to do with Hans would eventually bring her to him…

But she was tired of waiting… she tried to wake the woman up… she moved her body… she slithered up her face… she even tried to headbutt her, but nothing seemed to work…. And so, being unable to bite her throat because that would kill her…. Ember decided to do one of the things she did best… wrap itself around her neck…

She circled her neck and then squeezed… but nothing seemed to happen, she was still sleeping as if nothing bothered her…

So… Ember squeezed even more… until the woman finally woke up, and she let her grip go… but the woman was kind of… strange.

And that’s how Ember ended up in the room….

Hans had already gotten to work to find Ember… the easiest solution might have been to ask Emma, but asking her for help after everything he said to her… would just make him a hypocrite, so he decided to ask the association for help…

He was on the phone with the Milan association branch leader as he waited in the jet that had landed back on the strip and was now waiting for Hans to decide where to go.

The mechanical voice of a middle-aged man talked through the phone to Hans…

He sounded like he was tired of all the bullshit that was happening lately.

Even if the night market was without a doubt the most influential association in Italy, the Awakened Association was still a colossus.

“Alright… let me be clear… to sum up everything… you raised a snake that should now be about C-rank, maybe D-rank, that can understand humans, moves around sneakily, and is able to hunt in gates without any problems… when you came to Italy, you fought in Naples and fainted just to wake up in Greece after a couple of days, and the snake could be everywhere either in Greece or in Italy?…”

“… her name’s Ember and she’s got incredibly clean and white scales… as for the rest… yeah that’s right”

Alright… I’ll see what I can do”

He really sounded tired of everything… maybe it was the fate of anyone who occupied the position of branch leader for more than a certain amount of time…

‘Thankfully I didn’t become like that’

Hans thought shamelessly.

Before hanging up the call, Hans decided to say one last thing…

“I hope you will not spare any efforts in finding my friend… and if you manage to bring her to me… I will obviously compensate you with a reward.”

The voice on the other sound of the phone now seemed intrigued…

He asked calmly…

Indeed… the man had thought so, but to think Hans had really fought a battle so fierce that he fainted for a couple of days….

It was a good opportunity to know what the matter was about, and maybe bring a piece of important information to the Association…
