Chapter 1016: But if it will help me, then… it’s worth a try
The next day, Patricia paced back and forth in her room. She had been biting the tip of her thumb, thinking that she had already searched every corner of the house to find that file. She even snuck into her parents’ room and her brother’s room, but Theo’s vault was locked.
“Just where did they put it?” she wondered to herself. “I need to get it today, or I’m doomed. I already talked to a realtor — ah, goodness!”
DING!
Patricia flinched when she heard her phone ring, filling her with nothing but dread. Her shoulders tensed up as her face hardened. Turning her head toward the bed, she gulped nervously.
“It’s him,” she whispered. “It’s him… for sure.”
Patricia felt her entire body shake as the pressure escalated. She promised the buyer of the information that she would give him the document last night. But unfortunately, the file had gone missing, making the buyer question if she had even seen the file properly.
She swore on her life that she had seen it with her own eyes and promised to give it to him today. But how would she do that when she had already spent an entire night and the whole morning searching?
“Gosh…” she hissed. “I wouldn’t be this stressed if it weren’t for that useless brother of mine interrupting me!”
Again, it was Theo’s fault.
Everything was Theo’s fault — even her misfortune was his.
“Why did I have to have such a ridiculous brother?” she spat out, stomping her feet as she picked up her phone to check what the buyer had sent her. As soon as Patricia picked it up and checked, her lips curved down.
[Miss Miller, I’m expecting the document today. I can only give you one more day. Otherwise, I’ll cancel our deal and everything we could work on in the future. As you can see, I do not like inefficient and ineffective soldiers.
Good luck, Miss Miller.]
Patricia hissed again, grimacing as she muffled her frustrated screams. “Damn it!” she breathed out, her chest moving heavily in and out.
“This can’t be. I need it!” she harrumphed, now even more panicky and determined to find that file.
With that thought in mind, Patricia clasped her phone tightly and rushed out of her room. This time, she planned to check every part of the house, not just the places where Theo could have hidden it. She had to find it, no matter what.
—
Two hours later…
Patricia threw herself on the living room couch, exhausted, irritated, and scared. She had already turned the house upside down, looking for something that wasn’t there!
“I’m doomed,” she mumbled to herself, horrified. “I’m screwed.”
It wasn’t that Patricia was scared of the person she was trying to make a transaction with. What she was scared of was that this transaction wouldn’t push through, and her dream of independence would be gone. Considering that her family was stopping her from spreading her wings and never believed in her talents, they would surely want to make her dependent on them.
“This can’t be right…” she shook her head, biting the tip of her thumb again anxiously. “Where, where, where? I need to think. I only have a few hours left.”
Although she still had about ten hours left, Patricia was aware that once her family returned, things would get much harder.
“I need to calm down,” she murmured. “Calm down, Patricia. You have to calm down and think.”
After a minute, she opened her eyes and rose from her spot. She hurried upstairs and headed straight to her brother’s room. She had already checked this room twice, but she knew the file should be in there. There was probably a spot she missed!
Patricia checked the bed, under it, all its corners. She even checked the pillows, searching for any secret zippers. She did the same in his walk-in closet, checking all the drawers and even the mirror! Once she failed, she went to the bathroom.
The bathroom had another closet for towels and other things, as Theo had a tendency to forget things. Patricia rummaged through his stuff, looking for any secret compartments, checking each piece of clothing in case the file was slipped between them. After spending about half an hour just checking her brother’s bathroom cabinet, Patricia staggered back.
“It’s not in here,” she breathed out, all the clothes now a mess as she didn’t have the patience to keep them in their original state. The maid could just fix them, she thought.
“Gosh… I’m screwed.” A thin layer of tears coated her eyes, thinking that there was no other way. Her only escape route was gone. She bit her quivering bottom lip, teary-eyed.
Patricia felt her knees weaken, reaching out for the sink to stop herself from falling. She was on the verge of falling apart when her eyes fell on the trash bin right next to the sink.

“Huh?” Her brows rose as she noticed a red envelope in it. “This envelope…”
It looked exactly the same as the one she had received the last time.
Curious, Patricia picked it up from the bin. Creases were all over it as if Theo had crumpled it before throwing it away. After smoothing the red envelope a little, she opened it and saw a letter inside.
[Do you want to beat Atlas Bennet?]
Deep lines appeared between her brows as she read the letter again. Flipping it over, there was a contact number on the back. Patricia quickly went out and picked up her phone, checking the number on this card and the ones in her contacts.
“They’re different,” she whispered to herself, but the design still looked the same as the one she had. Patricia bit her bottom lip, holding her phone in one hand and the letter in the other. After a moment of pondering, she nodded and breathed out.
“It’s a bit too risky…” she murmured. “…but if it will help me, then… it’s worth a try.”
With that thought in mind, Patricia left her brother’s room with the envelope Theo had thrown away not long ago after seeing it in his pocket. Theo had seen the card when he received it a long time ago, but he hadn’t paid it any attention. However, the only reason it was still in his trash bin was because he had forgotten to throw it out and only saw it last night while looking for something.
Who would have thought that the stupid card he received a long time ago — unknowingly to all of them, at the same time Sven received the same card — would end up in Patricia’s hands?
