Chapter 1025: Don’t push your luck.
Patricia had forgotten what movie it was, but she remembered a line from a film she had watched a long time ago. It said that standing before death’s door was a place of realization, regret, and clarity—a place of self-reflection.
There, a person would watch their life play before them. Some found peace in it; others found regret. But Patricia? She found anger she had never felt before — hatred that no one else could probably ever hold in their lifetime.
“I… kill you,” she breathed out through gritted teeth, every breath feeling like stabbing pain in her lungs. Yet, she didn’t stop as she slowly gazed up at the people towering over her beaten body.
A short cough escaped her, her teeth smeared with blood, and her body could barely move from the pain it had inflicted. Yet, her eyes shone with greater malevolence than ever. Getting beaten to a pulp seemed like something that could break anyone’s spirit, but it seemed that for Patricia, getting beaten only made her spirit stronger… or perhaps, this was nothing but a struggle—the last act of bravery before her impending doom.
Either way, it didn’t matter to her.
She was furious to the point where her chest swelled with nothing but wishful thinking about their demise.
“With every breath I take, I curse you and your family to rot in the same trash you three came from,” she muttered under her breath, laughing at their faces. “You three are going to have a more painful death than death itself, and you will never wish to live again after that.”
The three strangers gazed down at her, scoffing in ridicule.
“What the hell is she talking about?” one of them laughed. “Does she think she’s some kind of ancient witch saying her last words?”
“Pfft — goodness. Did you hit her head or something?”
“I just slapped her a few times and kicked her in the stomach. She’s just too fragile to take any more beating,” the person responsible for the beating touched the scratch on his face. “This bitch… acting like she’s tough when she can’t even take a beating. If I’d beaten her seriously, she’d have more than a few broken bones. She should be glad I didn’t hit her face more.”
He then squatted down, studying her brave front as he examined her face. “She’s not that bad, actually.”
“Not bad? I’d say she’s quite pretty.”
“That’s why I avoided hitting her face. Otherwise…” The man licked his lips before smirking at her. “I can’t play with her and have fun, can I?”
The man shut his one eye as Patricia suddenly spat in his face. But instead of getting angry, he glanced at the other person.
“Hey, they didn’t tell us that we can’t do anything to her, right?” asked the man.
“As long as her body isn’t found.”
“Nice.” The man refocused his attention on Patricia, catching how her vengeful gaze flickered with fear. “Yes, darling. You heard that right. Well, maybe if you behave, I’ll keep you alive for a few days.”
Patricia’s lips quivered once more, her strong front crumbling at the mention of her fate. She shook her head and reached out to the man’s arm, only to be kicked by him once more.
“Ah —” Patricia gasped for air, hunching over with her hands, clutching her stomach. Even if she wanted to cry out loud, the pain was too much to bear. She writhed in pain as they carried her like a sack to a more private space, where they could do whatever vile thing they had in mind.

At the same time, Hugo was in the ward, staring at the unconscious man he had tied to the chair. His arm was resting on his leg, eyes fixed on the unconscious person he had found in this ward. Since Hugo had been away, he had requested police protection for a coma patient he had been looking after.
Hugo couldn’t keep taking this guy to wherever he went, after all. However, things happened, and somehow, this person managed to slip into the ward during a security shift. This led to the current situation. It was still fortunate that Hugo arrived just in time. Otherwise, he would have had a dead wardmate.
“The food here is nice, but the portions are small. If he dies, his free meals are gone as well,” he muttered to himself, shaking his head as he watched the unconscious person slowly regain consciousness.
“Ugh…” The man slowly furrowed his brows, groaning as some parts of his body ached. It took him a moment to realize he was tied up, immediately wriggling his body against the ropes. As he struggled to break free, he paused, sensing a pair of eyes on him.
Slowly, the man lifted his gaze and met those dark-olive eyes staring back at him. His complexion paled a little as memories of how he had lost consciousness flooded back.
“You —”
“Shh!” Hugo placed a finger to his lips before pointing it at the real patient in the room. “My roomie is sleeping. You might wake him up if you shout.”
The other man clenched his teeth, glaring at Hugo. “You… I’m going to kill you! Let me go.”
“Why would I let you go when I know that if I do, you’d kill me?” Hugo frowned, scrunching up his nose in dismay. “As far as I know, that’s not how it works.”

The man hissed, still trying to break free from his binds. Shouting would be useless, and getting the authorities involved would be more troublesome. So, he ignored Hugo’s sarcasm and focused on his restraints. But alas, the more he moved and struggled, the tighter they became.
“It’s no use,” Hugo sighed, doing some arm stretching as he talked. “That one is tied and knotted in a way that the more you move, the tighter it gets. It becomes even harder to remove without cutting it. So stay still. Otherwise, you’ll suffocate to death.”
The man froze, realizing just how tight the ropes felt now. No wonder they had seemed loose earlier, making him think they would eventually come undone.
“You —”
“Also, if you think taking those off will give you a chance to escape, there’s no freaking way in hell that’s gonna happen,” Hugo added, cutting him off immediately. He leaned over, his expression now stern and serious. “You managed to graze me because I want you alive so we can talk. Don’t push your luck.”
As silence settled over the ward, Hugo nodded in satisfaction. He studied the man with glinting eyes as he spoke again. “Now tell me. Who are you? And what do you want from my mate over there?”
