Chapter 1030: No police
“Hey! It’s me — shit! Are you okay?”
That question was probably the dumbest thing Patricia had heard today. Did she look okay? Did she look fine? Even though she hadn’t seen herself in the mirror, she knew her physical state was a giveaway.
She wasn’t fine.
She was scared to death.
Her entire body was in pain and shaking. Her bones felt as soft as tofu, and her heart kept pounding against her chest — it felt like she would faint any second.
But, alas, tears began to coat her eyes as the face before her slowly grew clearer.
Angel.
Her bleeding lips quivered as she bit them, sniffing hard as tears continued to fall down her cheeks. She clasped his arm as tightly as she could as if making sure this was real. She wanted to make sure this wasn’t just an illusion — someone had come to save her.
“Ah, shit…” Angel breathed out in irritation, his eyes falling on her exposed shoulders and slightly torn dress. He clicked his tongue in annoyance, taking off his jacket and tossing it over her. “Put that on first. The police are already on their way here.”
Angel studied her face for a moment before pushing himself up. For him, what he had done was already enough. He had given her a jacket to cover what she needed to cover. He had to go outside and wait for the police to arrive. But just as he turned his back on her and took a step, he felt a tug on his leg.
“Huh?” Looking back and down, his brows furrowed.
“Please don’t go,” she begged quietly, his jacket still draped over her head. “Please don’t leave.”
“I’m not leaving. Did you hear what I said? I’m going outside to wait for the police. You can stay here or come with me, but it’s cold. I don’t think you’d want to be idling outside in that dress.”
Patricia pursed her lips and clasped his pants tighter, her eyes shining as she held his gaze. Angel arched a brow and studied her.
Just a few hours ago, Patricia had been the arrogant and ignorant little princess of the Miller family. She had been ungrateful and… a crazy bitch. But now, she was like a puppy, shaking in the corner, unable to move, unable to speak. All she could do was cry silent tears, even her hiccups were quiet.
“Do you want to stay outside with me?” he asked, his tone now milder. When she shook her head, he rolled his eyes and nodded in understanding. “I’ll come back.”
Patricia pulled his pants a little more and shook her head.
“Gee! I’ll be back in a minute! I’ll just knock some teeth out, okay?” He clicked his tongue, tempted to kick her hand away. But seeing the scrape on her knuckles and the bruises on her arms, he didn’t have the heart to do so.
Patricia might be irritating to every degree, but Angel wasn’t heartless.
“One minute!” he repeated, shooing her hand like she was a puppy. When she finally let go, he shouted, “I’ll be back!”
With that, Angel jogged out of the room while Patricia squeezed herself into the corner. As she did so, the jacket he had casually tossed to her fell to her side. Looking at it and then back at the open door, she picked it up and pulled it around her in the corner.
‘One… two… three… twenty-one… thirty-one…’ she counted in her mind, her eyes locked on the door. ‘Forty-three… Forty-six… fifty-one…’
Right before she finished counting to a minute, she heard footsteps approaching. Using his jacket, she held it over her nose, her eyes anxiously watching the door. If it was someone other than Angel, she would scream and run.
“I’m back,” he announced just before stepping in, as if anticipating her screams. Angel slowed down and peeked through the door. “It’s me again.”
Seeing him peek his head in first made her exhale a jagged breath. With that, he walked in and stopped a few meters away. Angel rested his back against the wall before sliding down until his bottom hit the floor. He bent his knees, resting his arms on them.
“The police will be here any minute,” he said, glancing at his wristwatch to check how much longer until they arrived. “Since this is a redevelopment area, they’re taking their time. But they’ll come.”
He then snapped his eyes at her, hoping that repeating the fact the police were coming would calm her a bit. A shallow breath slipped past his nostrils as he caught her looking down while using his jacket as a blanket.
‘Penny was right, after all,’ he thought, shaking his head as he looked away from her. ‘She wouldn’t listen to Penny, no matter what. I wonder if Penny knew this would happen. That’s why she asked me to follow her?’
“The police…” After a moment of silence, Patricia’s meek voice broke through.
Angel slowly looked back at her, only to see her flinch the second he did. He looked away awkwardly, staring up at the broken ceiling.

“What about the police?” he asked. “They’re coming, I told you.”
“I don’t want it.”
“Huh?” His face crumpled as he looked at her in disbelief. “What did you say?”
Patricia pursed her lips, clutching the jacket tightly. “I don’t want to be in the news,” she meekly stuttered. “My… family can’t know.”
‘Holy shit… she is actually this dumb.’ Angel couldn’t help but scoff inwardly. ‘Even in this situation, she still has demands, huh?’
“Hey,” he said, his voice lowering, “once the police come, they’ll need a statement, alright? Otherwise, they’ll just let these guys go if no one comes forward—”
“Please.” She choked, shaking her head. “Please. No police.”
Angel ran his tongue across his inner cheek, studying the eager look in her eyes. In his mind, even if the police came, Patricia probably wouldn’t talk for whatever reason she had.
“Tsk.” He clicked his tongue and pressed his ear. “Get her out of here.”
He snapped his eyes back to her. “Someone will come here in a bit. He’s my subordinate. Don’t give him a hard time. Otherwise, you’re staying here until the police arrive. Do you understand, Miss Miller?”
Patricia nodded profusely, and as he instructed, someone came to get her out of the area before the police arrived.

Minutes later, Patricia was seated in the back of a car. She hid her body under the jacket. Even with the heater on, her body continued to shiver and sweat. Her lips opened and closed as she glanced at the person in the driver’s seat, wanting to ask about Angel.
But before she could muster the courage to speak, she saw red and blue lights flashing from her side. Turning her head, she saw police cars and officers surrounding the entrance to where everything had happened. Tears quickly welled in her eyes as she saw some officers dragging the men out.
“Hic!” she hiccupped, covering her mouth. But then she noticed the ambulance and saw someone seated in the back, with a blanket over his shoulder.
It was Angel.
Unlike how she remembered him, Angel had a large bruise on his cheek while the medics were bandaging his arm. As if sensing where she was, he cautiously looked in the direction of the car, and she could’ve sworn their eyes met.
‘What… why is he beaten like that?’ she wondered, her brow furrowing as realization crossed her mind. ‘Did he have to hurt himself… to replace the… real victim?’
