Knock knock.
Penny’s pen paused mid-stroke as the faint knock reached her ears. When the door opened, she raised her head to see Yugi sticking his head inside.
“Penny, you’ve got a visitor,” he announced. “It’s Finn Davis. I’m letting him in.”
“Uh…” Deep lines formed between her brows as her nose scrunched up. Before she could respond, Yugi had already closed the door and left. “Shouldn’t he ask me whether to let him in or not first instead of deciding on his own?”
Her face soured briefly, but she let it go. Moments later, another knock came at the door. When it opened and revealed Finn, Penny pushed herself up from her swivel chair.
“Mr. Davis!” she exclaimed, walking over to greet him. “I didn’t expect your visit today. Come in.”
“I’m sorry for dropping in on such short notice,” Finn said politely, stopping in front of her. “How are you, Penelope?”
“I wasn’t the one who got into an accident and fell into a coma, so I’m okay,” she quipped, smirking. “You? Recovering well?”
“Getting better,” he replied. “Just a bit more rest and I’d be out and about again.”
“I’m glad to hear that, but as someone with a bit of medical knowledge, you shouldn’t be driving around the city to meet people if recovering quickly is your goal. Take it easy, Finn Davis. Your recovery should be your priority. How can you protect others if you can’t protect yourself?”
Finn gave a subtle smile and nodded. “I appreciate that, but I’m not driving around the city for business. The only time I go out is to bring Nina’s lunch—she seems to forget it lately.”
“Ah…” Penny nodded knowingly before smacking her lips and motioning her arm toward the set of couches. “Take a seat.”
“Thank you.”
“What do you want?” she asked as they moved to the seating area. “Tea? Juice? Coffee? I don’t have alcohol, but I do have milk. Same thing.”
Penny casually plopped down on an armchair while Finn perched on the sofa. “Just pick one. Don’t be shy.”
“Thank you, but that’s not necessary,” he said. “Though, if you have a secretary, water would be fine.”
“Having a secretary is a bit of a hassle. Although, I’m reconsidering.”
“Is time the issue? If you asked Benjamin Vitt, I’m sure he could find you a suitable one.”
“Time is part of it, but honestly, I just don’t trust anyone enough to let them know all my business.”
“That’s fair.”
“Enough with the small talk, Mr. Davis.” Penny’s tone shifted from playful and welcoming to serious. “Why are you here? You wouldn’t drive all the way to my office for no reason. Spill it. I don’t have all day for chit-chat.”
Finn chuckled, shaking his head in defeat. “You’re right. I came here for a reason.”
“Did something happen?”
“Yes.”
“What is it?” A sharp glint flickered in her eyes. “I doubt it’s another threat to your life, considering Yugi is handling your security. Plus, I’ve added extra protection for you and Nina just in case. However, I’m intrigued to know if it was, as it only means the enemy found a hole in the security formation.”
Finn pressed his lips into a thin line, leaning forward to rest his arms on his knees. His grim expression made Penny narrow her eyes, bracing for bad news.
“It’s a matter of life and death, Penny,” he said, his voice low. Her right brow arched as her eyes sharpened. “Though you might think it’s silly.”
“Life and death is no silly thing. Just tell me,” she urged, her voice carrying a suppressed edge. “Is it Jonathan again?”
“No.” He shook his head. “It’s Nina.”

“Huh?” Her brows knitted. “What about her? Did something happen to her?”
The second Finn would say yes, Penny was ready to jump out of her seat and deploy his men to Nina. All he would have to do was say one word: “yes,” and she could listen to the details later.
Finn sighed helplessly, looking up at her. When he explained his situation, Penny’s sharp demeanor cracked. Her face cycled through a range of expressions, and by the time he finished, her dismay was evident.
“I didn’t want to waste your time knowing how valuable it is,” Finn added with a heavy sigh. “But when I thought about who I could talk to… I realized there was no one else. There’s not a single person I talk to about these things. I would’ve gone to a counselor, but I figured you’d understand Nina better since she’s your sister.”
Finn paused, then asked hesitantly, “What do you think is going on with her? Do you think she’s starting to hate the idea of being with me?”
“Uh…” Penny leaned back slightly, her expression growing more unpleasant. “As far as I remember, this is a security firm. If you’ve got security problems, come here. Someone hacked your security system? You call us. A threat to your life, but still not enough for police protection? We got you. This is the first time someone’s brought a relationship dilemma to my office.”
“This is important to me,” Finn said, his voice solemn. “Maybe it’s not to you, but for me, it’s life and death. Penny, in this lifetime, I don’t just want to live—I want to live with her. But if my presence suffocates her, then I’ll gladly let go of that selfish wish.”
“And what about my wish?” she muttered under her breath. “You’re starting to suffocate me, too.”
Finn ignored the comment, sighing heavily. His eyes softened, almost pleading, his lips drawn into a deep frown. He looked like a puppy about to be abandoned.
“I think I’m watching our relationship crumble,” he confessed with dread and sadness. “She’s going to break up with me, isn’t she?”
“Uh, wait—don’t cry,” Penny blurted out, panicking slightly as she raised her hands. Comforting others wasn’t exactly her strength. She glanced around her office, suddenly feeling it had grown darker and gloomier.
That gloominess was coming from him.
“Hey!” she gasped, trying to dispel the heavy atmosphere. “Calm down, will you? My goodness! I think I’m watching someone spiral into depression!”
But Finn just hung his head lower, dark clouds practically forming over him.
When Penny told herself she was ready to face any challenge this morning, this wasn’t the kind of challenge she had in mind.
