Chapter 1109: A fellow broke
“Tch.” Slater clicked his tongue, watching Benjamin and James scurry away to go back to the shop where they left Ray. “They didn’t have to; that guy isn’t needed anywhere. Why is he even here?”
After leaving the restaurant and parting with everyone, Slater’s group stopped by a souvenir shop. Slater wanted to buy a souvenir, which he couldn’t buy earlier with Penny around. But then, Ray told them that he would just take a bathroom break.
They forgot about him when Slater finished buying some things.
“Tsk.” Not thinking about it anymore, he shook his head and flashed the vendor a smile. “I’ll take the hair clip.”
Since Slater had held off on buying souvenirs earlier, he took this opportunity to shop in the night market. The reason for this was that there was only one person he wanted to buy souvenirs for, and that was Penny. But since Penny was on this trip and it was unlikely she would go to the night market, he thought of checking the things she already bought and then buying the things she hadn’t.
A perfect plan.
‘I’m sure she’d be happy that she isn’t missing anything from this trip,’ he mentally giggled, imagining how Penny would shower him with praise. ‘Second Brother doesn’t have the money to buy her anything, and First Brother is just too heartless to appreciate anything.’
So, in a way, Slater was certain he would rise in the brother ranks after this trip.
The mere thought of it filled him with excitement and motivation. He could already imagine his sister fawning over him, crying as she thanked him. Besides, he also wanted to buy something for his mother and Old Mrs. Pierson.
“Hihihi.” Slater giggled happily, going to another stall to check out what they had in store. The next stall sold almost the same things as the previous one. Even so, he didn’t lose heart and checked the items carefully.
Eventually, something caught his eye.
“Huh?” Slater stopped, facing the stall. He blinked a few times, staring at the frog keychain before him. “That is…”
Reaching out to pick up the keychain, Slater froze when someone else suddenly took it.
“Ahh! This is so cute! I’m sure little Beanie will like it. I’ll take this one!” said the person who snatched the keychain.
The vendor smiled and nodded before taking the keychain. But alas, before the vendor could take it, Slater suddenly grabbed it.
“Hey!” the other customer yelled, only to be yelled back at by Slater.
“This is mine!” Slater glared at the other person. “How dare you take it when I’m already reaching out for it?!”
“You hadn’t touched it yet…” the other person trailed off as her eyes met Slater’s. The latter’s anger also subsided, and his reaction was replaced with shock.
“Mint?!” he gasped.
“You!?” Mint furrowed her brows before narrowing her eyes. “Are you stalking me now?”
“As if! I should be the one asking that!” Slater roared. “Hey, are you stalking me?”
“Why would I stalk you?” she asked. “I’m prettier than you.”
“!!!!” Slater’s face stiffened, his eyes wide and unblinking. “What did you just say?”
Mint clicked her tongue and huffed. “Give that back to me.”
“No!” Slater raised his hand with the keychain in it, making use of his height advantage. “It’s mine! I’m giving this to my sister!”
“Hey, I don’t care who you give it to! My little cousin is much more important, for sure!”
“Hah!” Slater scoffed. “I don’t care about your cousin. This cousin is not even close to siblings!”
“Is your sister cute?”
“She is!” he yelled, but then, he thought of Penny, and all he remembered was Penny breathing fire like a dragon. “Well, she was… when she was a kid.”
The corners of Mint’s mouth hooked up into a smirk as she crossed her arms arrogantly. “My cousin is cute — he is just the cutest.”

“What does that have to do with this?!” he barked. “I got here first!”
“But I grabbed it first!”
“I saw it first!”
“Still, I got it first,” Mint retorted in a knowing tone. “Slater Bennet, put it down and give it back. Why are you fighting me over this? I’m sure there are others, right?”
She and Slater then turned to the vendor. The vendor darted his eyes between the two before he smiled brightly and shook his head.
“See?!” Slater hissed at her. “This is the last one! Just get something else! That one — look! It’s cute too!”
“No.” Mint shook her head, her expression getting serious now. “You… I’m not going to say you’re doing this for your superior, but put that hand down now.”
Slater smirked. “No way.”
“I’m asking this because I don’t want you to get hurt,” she clarified, her tone now akin to a warning. “Don’t be unreasonable. Give that back.”
“You don’t want me to get hurt?” Slater couldn’t help but laugh at that remark, his eyes glinting as his mouth twisted into a vile smirk. “Mint, since you and I are currently out of duty, I don’t have to hold back.”
“You… are really getting cheeky, aren’t you?” Mint smirked back.
The vendor standing behind the stall felt his back sweat a little. His eyes fell behind the stall, catching sight of a basket full of the same keychains. Yet, he stayed quiet as the two fought over the keychain. Much to his surprise, when he looked ahead, only one person was there.
Mint flashed him a pretty smile and opened her hand, showing the vendor the keychain. “I’ll take it.”
“Of course.” The vendor nodded, taking the keychain from her palm when she asked him the price. “Three thousand.”
As soon as those words escaped the vendor’s mouth, Mint pinched the keychain back. “What did you say?”
“Three thousand, Miss.”
“Three — Three… hey, come on. I’m also a local here.” She pinched the other side of the keychain harder. “Three thousand for a keychain… are you looking for a fight or what? Or are you saying you want three thousand punches?”
The vendor flinched a little, sensing danger approaching. But before he could give in and tell her it only cost fifteen, Slater suddenly stepped up.
“I’ll take it,” he breathed out. “If she’s not paying, I’ll get it at that price.”
Mint’s face stiffened, her mouth falling open in disbelief. She had to watch the cunning vendor pack the keychain and sell it to the person who could afford it.
Yes, apparently, Mint… was also kind of broke — sounds a little familiar, because a certain someone had the same financial story.
