Chapter 1140: She better have had a lot of drinks if I were her!
Since Hugo had dealt with all sorts of criminals and felons on duty, he was aware that the gang he had just thrashed must have had some form of transportation. And sure enough, the man led them to where their truck was.
The truck was akin to a military transport vehicle for foot soldiers. It was just smaller and looked improvised to resemble one.
With Hugo at the wheel, Atlas took the front passenger seat. In the back were the guy they dragged along and Mark, keeping an eye on him.
“I didn’t bring my phone,” Hugo said sternly, his eyes fixed on the dark road. The more they drove, the darker the road became. He clenched his teeth, knowing that after what he had just done to the pub, he had to report to the police.
Hugo was still out of the combat zone, and right now, he shouldn’t be in trouble. That’s why, no matter what, Hugo often involved the authorities and followed the book. With his position and rank, he had to dance with the rules to get things done without getting into too much trouble.
“Damn it!” Hugo punched the steering wheel to release the frustration building up inside him. “How could… the guys who should be fighting off these criminals…”
He gritted his teeth angrily, but in a way, he knew this wasn’t the first time. There were many places in the world where evil prevailed—a place where normal citizens had to live in fear because of people like these gangs.
Atlas slid his eyes toward Hugo, but this time, he didn’t stop Hugo from seething in anger. “Let’s focus on rescuing Slater and Benjamin first,” he said quietly, glancing at the side of the road. “With your position, I’m sure you can do something about this situation, but not tonight.”
“I know,” Hugo breathed out, gripping the steering wheel tighter. “Still, it’s upsetting. If the police are involved too, then whoever the mayor is must be in on it as well.”
The more Hugo thought about it, the angrier he became. Although he had been sick almost the entire trip due to swimming from the town to the island, he had met quite a few locals on his first and second days. All of them were lively and polite, constantly smiling, which would give anyone the impression that life here was just as simple as it seemed.
Yet, behind the smiles of the locals here was something sickening.
“Hah!” Hugo huffed, shaking his head, telling himself to focus. He couldn’t let anger consume him; Slater and Benjamin were in danger. “By the way, we have to tell Penny to stay put. Maybe she could call for help.”
“I already sent her a message,” Atlas replied in his usual calm tone. “I sent her the location where we’re headed and told her what happened.”
“What?” Hugo and even Mark gasped, casting Atlas a brief look.
“Sir Atlas, why would you do that?” Mark asked in disbelief. “Miss Penny would be worried sick if you told her all of that.”
Atlas nonchalantly shrugged. “Do you really think that troublesome girl would stay still if you tell her to stay still?”
His answer left Mark and Hugo speechless. The latter set his eyes back on the road, now entering the woods, just as the man had instructed. Meanwhile, Mark kept his shocked gaze on Atlas.
“Sir Atlas, don’t tell me Miss Penny is also going there?” Mark asked under his breath, knowing that if Penny went, that also meant Zoren was with her. There was no way in hell Zoren would leave Penny alone in such a dangerous place.
Besides, Penny didn’t bring any bodyguards on this trip, thinking nothing would go wrong. After all, they were supposed to stay on the island for the duration of the trip. It was the same for Zoren. They had said that Mark was already with them, and that should be enough.
But before Mark could start considering his options, Atlas’s remark made his heart drop.
“Heading there?” Atlas let out a bitter laugh. “They were already headed there while we were interrogating that bartender.”
Bzzt!
Just then, Atlas heard his phone vibrate in his hand. Checking it, he snapped his eyes up and looked back at Mark, waving his phone.
“It seems they’re already there,” Atlas said casually. “Mint, Penny, and Zoren are already at the place.”
Hugo and Mark’s eyes widened in shock, prompting Hugo to press the pedal harder. Mark, on the other hand, suddenly grabbed the gang member’s collar.
“There’s a closest route!” Mark roared under his breath. “Tell us the fastest route to get there—NOW!”
The gang member, still trying to recover from his actions, jolted in surprise. His eyes shook under this pair of murderous glares. Earlier, Atlas’s had made him shiver—almost giving him chills—with how cold his eyes looked. Then, Hugo before that bore the eyes of a monster about to devour everyone.
And now, this beast!
“T—there’s one! But it’s rough and dangerous—”
“Tell me where!” Hugo barked from the driver’s seat. “God damn it—Penny! That crazy girl! Has she lost her mind?! She better have had a lot of drinks if I were her!”

Atlas: “…” He slid his eyes to the corner, unable to understand Mark and Hugo’s panic. ‘I don’t think that’s a good idea, though. She’ll beat them up too.’
“Okay! Okay!” The gang member panicked after Mark shook him by the collar. “That way! Just go straight—ack!”
Before the man could finish his instructions, Hugo abruptly made a turn, causing the truck to jerk a bit. The man felt his body lift into the air, hitting his head on the metal bar above him, and subsequently biting his tongue. Surprisingly, he was the only one who seemed hurt, as Mark intuitively held onto something else, while Atlas grabbed onto whatever was within reach.
But the truck didn’t stop, heading straight to where the gang member had directed. After a few seconds, Hugo was yelling again, asking if this was the right path. So, despite having bitten his tongue, the gang member had to give further instructions.

Meanwhile, Penny, Mint, and Zoren stood a hundred meters away from this old gate, deep in the forest. Their eyes were fixed on the gates, still seated on their bikes, their feet on the ground.
