Chapter 1142: Not in a million years
Zoren, Mint, and Penny looked around at their surroundings, full of tall grasses and trees. The main clearing, where the gates stood, guarded a huge compound inside. And here they were, on their bicycles, as if they had lost their way.
But alas, that wasn’t the case.
This was their destination.
That building.
The place where Slater and Benjamin were possibly taken.
“This is as far as we can go with these bikes,” Mint said quietly, casting a look at the couple. “And this is as far as the two of you can go. It’s dangerous there, and I can’t let you get any closer.”
Mint felt her pockets out of habit. Much to her dismay, she realized she was still wearing that high-collared dress.
“Damn it!” she muttered through gritted teeth, unbuttoning her collar. “No wonder I felt like I was being choked.”
She then snapped her attention to the couple. “I need you to go back and make a call. I forgot my bag, and my phone was in it. I’ll need a backup.” Her eyes glinted sharply as she darted them between Penny and Zoren. “You guys can do that, can’t you?”
“My brother’s inside,” Penny breathed. “I’m not going to stay here and do nothing.”
“You’re not doing nothing. You’re going to go back and use my phone to call for backup,” Mint said with a knowing tone. “Look, you might be courageous, but this place is no place for simple courage. Besides, you’ve got a sick boy with you!”
“My Renren is not sick,” Penny shot back, and Zoren added, “I’m no boy.”
Mint ruffled her hair. Now this was becoming a problem. “I can’t let you in.” Since the nice talk wasn’t working, she decided to adopt a more serious and intimidating tone. “Penelope Bennet, and Zoren Pierson, I know you’re both worried. But I promise you, everything will be alright if you just listen to me.”
“I want you to stay put,” she continued in the same manner. “We can’t just barge through that gate. Unless you can’t see, this place is guarded and surrounded by armed men. You guys are businessmen, not soldiers — in case you’ve forgotten.”
This time, Penny and Zoren remained silent.
“I’m going to sneak in. I need to save my cousin — I mean, I need to save two people.” Mint nodded at them. “If you go in and something terrible happens, it might put Slater, Benjamin, and possibly my life in more danger. Do you understand what I’m saying? The police here are in on it. So reporting the situation might not change anything. We need more forces from the real authorities.”
Penny gripped the bike’s handle while listening to Mint’s reasoning. No matter how displeased she was, Mint was right. Even though Penny was confident in her skills, Zoren was with her. She couldn’t just put him in such a situation.
“Penny, your phone’s still with you?” Zoren broke his silence, breaking his wife’s silence.
“Uh, yeah… but I lost reception when I got closer to this place.”
“We need to get reception,” Zoren nodded at her before shooting Mint a look. “I agree with Mint. It’s going to be a lot more complicated if we go in with her without asking for help.”
Mint heaved a sigh of relief. “Good God! Finally!”
“My wife and I will find reception,” Zoren said sternly. “Don’t die, Mint.”
“Me? Dying?” Mint laughed quietly. “Not in a million years — not when my little cousin is on the line.”
With that, the three of them exchanged glances before Penny and Zoren turned their bikes around. As the two pedaled back the way they came, Mint stayed where she was, her eyes on them. It took only a moment for them to fade into the darkness.
“Hah…” Mint breathed out, setting her eyes ahead. “Ah…”
Mint quietly made the cross sign before moving her bike to a nearby tree. Leaving it there, she quietly approached the gates. One of the most challenging things wasn’t just getting into a highly secured place of a huge syndicate, but the lack of knowledge about the buildings.
Mint knew she needed to cook up a plan and get in without being noticed. She had to make sure Benjamin was alright; she didn’t need to think of Slater, knowing the latter could get away. Perhaps the only silver lining here was that Benjamin was with Slater.
“Slater will buy us some time,” Mint told herself, climbing up the tree as she spotted some movement. ‘Though this is his damn fault for getting caught. Why the hell would he snoop around here?’
On their way here, Penny had contacted Atlas. According to him, Benjamin and Slater were taken to the base due to a mistaken identity. Atlas said the syndicate mistook one of them for snooping around the town. Mint was certain that it was Slater — there was no way it wasn’t him. Benjamin had no idea what was going on on the island.
Staying on the branch, Mint leaned back and heard footsteps, followed by voices. When she gazed down, two armed men had stopped near the tree where Mint was hiding. She rubbed her nose as the pungent scent of cigarettes wafted through her nostrils.

“There’s no one,” one of the armed men said, smoke curling out of his mouth. “Probably just the wind.”
“Well, as far as I remember, the wind doesn’t have a voice,” said the other man, looking around. “I think I heard people talking earlier.”
“We already checked, and there’s no one.” The man with the cigarette took out a small can, opened it, and offered the other some cigarettes. “Just take a stick. Who would come here? No one has that death wish, you know?”
The other man looked at him and shrugged, taking a cigarette. He borrowed the other man’s lighter to light it up. The two armed men casually smoked. Unbeknownst to them, Mint wrapped her legs around the branch and slowly lowered her upper body down like a snake.
They were knocked unconscious before they knew it.
