Chapter 1165: Naylani, were you the one who… hurt our Renren?
[Continuation]
The nanny was declared dead on the spot. Naylani and Zoren survived the fire. However, unlike Zoren, who had inhaled too much smoke and lost a lot of blood, Naylani’s injuries consisted of a few broken bones. She had some minor burns, but overall, she was fine.
“Uh…” A soft yet dry groan escaped Naylani’s closed mouth as she opened her eyes. Her eyelids were still heavy, and her vision was blurred, but she could make out a blurry figure of a man hovering over her. She could hear him talking, but his voice sounded distant. It was inaudible.
Naylani tried to keep her eyes open but couldn’t maintain consciousness. Even as she fell back into unconsciousness, there was only one thought on her mind:
‘I lived.’
A very faint smile crept onto her face before everything faded to black.
—
Naylani’s fall from the second floor had been enough to keep her unconscious for a few days. But when she woke up, Enzo was there at her side.
“Hey,” he called, holding her hand gently. Tears quickly coated his eyes as a relieved smile appeared on his face. “Hey, gorgeous, you’re awake.”
Naylani opened and closed her eyes weakly, watching as tears of relief fell from his eyes. She couldn’t help but smile faintly.
Silence fell over them as they stared at each other. No words were exchanged between them, even when the attending doctor came to check on her condition. Now out of critical condition, the doctor advised that she rest until she was ready to be discharged. She would also need therapy, but other than that, everything seemed fine.
With that, the doctors left Naylani and Enzo alone.
“Do you need anything?” he asked, still holding her hand lovingly. “Hungry? Mother prepared some healthy soups for you. I’ll ask someone to bring it here warm, alright?”
Naylani blinked and nodded faintly, watching him smile in relief. Nothing significant was said between them; Enzo was just glad that his wife was awake. Although that didn’t mean the anxiety that had eaten him alive for the past few days had completely gone away, having her awake was one less worry.
They didn’t talk about the incident—at least, not until the police arrived.
At first, when Naylani saw the officers by the door, she thought they were only there for formality. After all, their house had burned down, and the police needed to be involved. But after talking with Enzo for a few minutes, they entered the ward with him to ask her a few questions.
Their questions were basic, questions she had expected. But the more they asked, the more suspicious their line of questioning seemed.
Naylani lay motionless on the hospital bed, staring blankly at the officers. Seeing this, Enzo quickly stepped in.
“How about we continue this later?” he suggested. “My wife just woke up this morning. This could be too overwhelming for her.”
The officers looked at each other before turning their attention to Naylani. But before they could thank her for cooperating despite her condition, she spoke.
“Zoren,” she whispered. “What happened to him?”
This time, the officers fell silent and instinctively looked at Enzo. Enzo forced a smile and nodded at the officers, signaling that this was a matter that should be discussed privately. With that, the officers excused themselves and left. Enzo kindly offered to walk them out, thanking the officers and then apologizing that he had to send them away. The officers, who sympathized with this man, who had been battling to keep it together despite having his family in critical condition, simply gave him words of encouragement.
When Enzo returned to the ward, he and Naylani were alone in the private ward once again. Enzo sat down on the edge of the bed.
“Sweetheart, about Zoren…” Enzo’s smile faltered as the weight in his heart doubled. Before Naylani woke up, Enzo had barely kept himself together with both his wife and son in critical condition.
Just when he thought his worries had lessened, he realized he was wrong. Now, he had to break the news to his wife. He didn’t want to tell her, especially since she had just regained consciousness.
Enzo forced a smile and held her hand. “He’s fine, darling. He’s going to be fine.” He kept his answer vague, but instead of seeing his wife’s shocked expression, her response took him aback.
“He… lived?”
A moment of silence settled between them as they stared at each other. Deep lines slowly appeared between Enzo’s brows, utterly confused by her answer.
“Naylani, sweetheart, of course. He’ll be fine—”
“How come he didn’t die?” she asked again, her voice tinged with disappointment.

“Naylani—”
“How could he live?” she continued, cutting him off, and pushing herself to sit up with great difficulty. “This can’t be. How could he still be alive? There’s no way—”
“Naylani!” Enzo grabbed her shoulders, stilling her in place. “What are you saying? I think you’re still confused, so you’re saying all this nonsense. Be calm, please.”
“I’m not confused,” she breathed, her eyes locking with his.
Another moment of silence settled between them. Enzo didn’t know how, but after staring into his wife’s eyes for a second, a horrible thought crossed his mind.
The police weren’t just here to ask Naylani about the fire—they were also investigating a possible burglary and arson. After all, Enzo, who had jumped into a burning house to save his son and wife, had found Zoren in the attic, lying in a pool of his own blood.
Since he didn’t find Naylani, he had instinctively taken Zoren and carried him out of the house. That explained the bandages on his arm and parts of his body. He got burned on the way. Naylani was found right outside the house, so he didn’t need to go back in.
Because of Zoren’s stab wound, the police were considering the possibility of a robbery gone wrong. With their status, it seemed likely. However, right now, Enzo couldn’t help but wonder as his heart sank to the bottom of his stomach.
“Naylani, were you the one who… hurt our Renren?”
