Chapter 1182: Just say sorry
Back in the day, Patricia was always all over her big brother. She would do anything just to be praised by him, and Theo was always generous with his compliments. Patricia even worked hard in school just to be placed in the top section like him. Even though her efforts never yielded results, she still tried her best—even if it meant bullying Ginnie.
Her methods weren’t right, but she did it to impress her brother.
In her eyes, Theo was the best. Not only was he smart, but he was also a caring brother. He was always there for her, helping her with problems she struggled with. And to top it off, Theo was at the top of his class without even trying.
Everything changed when Patricia saw him struggling in the Star Section. The cool, effortless Theo started showing signs of distress just to maintain his rank, and it shattered the perfect image she had of him. The breaking point in their relationship came when Theo finally gave up and begged their parents to let him study abroad. At the time, Patricia had just started making friends again.
To her, it felt like he was ruining everything for her after being exposed as a “fraud.”
That was what she made herself believe for the longest time. But now, after everything she had been through, she realized how wrong she had been to blame him. Theo may have struggled, and he may not have been the effortless genius she once thought, but he had always been the same caring brother. That part of him never changed.
And now, as she stood before him, her heart ached.
“I… missed us,” she breathed out, her lips quivering, tears streaming down her cheeks. “I’m sorry.”
Those were the only words she could manage before her breath hitched. She sucked in her cheeks, trying to keep a brave front, but her courage was crumbling fast.
Theo furrowed his brows, watching his sister cry. “Patricia,” he whispered, the irritation and anger from moments ago vanishing completely. All that remained was the deep worry in his eyes as he placed his hands on her shoulders, lowering his head slightly to look at her properly.
“Why are you crying?” he asked gently. “Hey, did something happen?”
Knowing his sister, there was no way she was saying this out of nowhere. Patricia had hated him for years, blaming him for everything. Something must have happened to change her mind.
His eyes scanned her face up close, searching for any sign of distress, but Patricia just bit her quivering lips. Then, with a deep breath, she slapped his hands away and threw herself into his arms.
“I’m apologizing, you dummy!” she cried, wrapping her arms around him. “I said I was sorry! I miss us—our bond, our relationship, everything that I ruined!”
She sucked in another deep breath, and with it, everything she had been holding back came pouring out.
“I know you had every reason to be angry at me. I was harsh, I was mean, and I put you down when you were already struggling. I was a horrible person—a horrible sister! I blamed you for everything and convinced myself that you were hurting me on purpose because I was the dumb sibling!”
Her voice wavered as she continued, “I was angry at how you made things look so easy, keeping your rank effortlessly, only to fall behind in the Star Section. But I wasn’t angry at you for struggling—I was angry that I worked so hard to reach the top section while you made it seem effortless, only to give up when the pressure became too much!”
She clutched his suit tighter. “I was resentful when I saw you trying to curry favor with Atlas Bennet! I thought you had no pride at all for doing something like that!”
“I called you useless! I treated you like nothing! I… I told you I hated you.” This time, her voice was barely above a whisper. “But… I didn’t hate you. It was never you. The problem was me… and I hate myself for it.”
Patricia buried her face in his chest, her tears soaking through the fabric. “I was angry at you for everything, but in truth, I was angry at myself. I kept lashing out at you, and whenever I realized I went too far… I chickened out. Instead of apologizing, I pretended like nothing happened.”
“I’m sorry for letting our relationship crumble so easily,” she added, her voice weak and shaky. “I’m sorry that I never tried to understand you. I’m sorry… that I never learned how to apologize and, instead, I learned how to ignore my mistakes.”
Theo stood frozen, his hands hanging stiffly at his sides. Hearing everything she said—even if it was jumbled and messy—only showed him how bad Patricia was at making amends.
But she was trying… and she was crying.
Looking down at her, his tense shoulders relaxed, and a deep sigh escaped him. Slowly, he placed his hands on her trembling back, patting it lightly. No matter how much she had angered and frustrated him, she was still, and would always be, his little sister.
Even if she had been harsh and mean, that would never change. As her older brother, he was meant to understand and be patient with her. Maybe that was what he had been taught growing up, but even without that, he wanted to understand her—even when she made it difficult.
Why? Because he was her big brother.
“Just say sorry,” he murmured. “You don’t need a long explanation when you apologize. Just… ‘sorry’ is enough.”
Patricia’s face crumpled as she clutched his suit tighter. “I’m sorry, Brother Theo. I’m sorry! I really am very sorry!”
“Mhm.” His gaze softened as he let her cry into his chest, gently patting her back. Everything she had done and said to him didn’t just disappear, but hearing her apologize for the first time made his heart feel lighter.
Maybe this was the start of healing their broken bond.
