Penny lay on the grass, exhausted after fighting all these guys just to fix their brains. How dare they paint her as the bad guy while using their vacations to follow her around? No wonder she had felt like she was being watched in town—she had just found out that they had been taking turns spying on her from a distance.

Now that she was completely drained, they had the audacity to flee after calling her crazy.

“Those shameless guys…” she mumbled, staring at the darkening sky. “How dare they say they were just looking after me and trying to protect my image in front of my husband?”

Not far away, Angel, who was just trying to catch his breath, glared at her. But this time, he didn’t feel the need to bicker.

“Those guys… I’m giving them a round two later. How could they just leave me here all alone?”

Since Penny had been occupied with Angel last, the others had taken the opportunity to flee. It was like they had left Angel as a sacrifice, even shouting that they would live their lives to the fullest while keeping his memory in their hearts.

“Hey,” Penny called, giving him a side-eye. “I have a question for you.”

“What?”

“Didn’t I send you to protect Renren? So why did you come running to find me before making sure he was fine?”

Angel scrunched up his nose. “You sent me to him to follow his orders. And his orders were that, in case of an emergency, I should save you first before anyone else. Duh.”

“Tch.” Unlike in Zoren and Mark’s case, Penny merely clicked her tongue and looked away. “I knew he would do that.”

“Mark was with him, so I guess it’s fair,” Angel pointed out. “Wait—was that your order, or did he just ditch you for your husband?”

“We didn’t all arrive in that place together. We got there separately, and Mark was just following my orders,” she explained calmly, her breathing now steady. “I knew Renren would rather leave himself vulnerable to save me, and I was right. You came to my rescue instead of him.”

Angel shrugged nonchalantly and collapsed onto his back to rest. Since Penny was already calm, he no longer felt the need to run for his life.

“Anyway, how come you’re here?” she asked after a moment. “As far as I remember, I told you to look after Patricia Miller.”

“Did you send me to her just to add more stress to my life? That woman is just… Ugh, I don’t even want to think about her while I’m on vacation.” He scrunched up his nose, reminded of the headaches Patricia had given him. If Penny was already demanding, Patricia was on a whole other level. “Don’t worry about her. Mylo didn’t want to come, so I told him to look after her while I’m away.”

“Mylo, huh?” Penny hummed thoughtfully, picturing Mylo and Patricia. “Is it really okay to just leave her with him?”

“She’ll be fine. I don’t think she’d try to take her life again after that failed attempt.” Angel slowly turned his head toward her. “By the way, why are we even saving her? From where I stand, she’s not that important.”

“She isn’t important to me, but she is to her family. I bought the Miller Company, and my dad is handling it since First Brother joined the Pierson Corporation. What I’m saying is, even if she’s a mess, she has access to every document the Millers have. I can’t just let her go around and ruin my plans. If news of the buyout spreads to the wrong people, it won’t be as successful.”

“Ahh…” Angel nodded in understanding. “Makes sense, since she planned to sell information about the buyout.”

“If I weren’t keeping an eye on her, she would’ve done something worse by now.”

“Well, I just hope she’s learned her lesson. After everything that happened to her, anyone would change at least a little, right?”

“I hope so,” Penny murmured, thinking about the work she had left behind in Anteca. “She might not change completely, but I do hope she starts thinking about her family. After all, from what I’ve seen, the Millers—or rather, Theo Miller in particular—isn’t such a bad person.”

“And then you say you’re not kind,” Angel quipped. “Sometimes, you are, you know.”

“I’m always kind. What are you talking about?”

“Penny, cut the crap. Your husband isn’t here, so you’re not impressing anyone.” Angel pulled himself upright and gazed at her. “I’m heading back.”

Penny raised an eyebrow and glanced at him. “Going back to the island where you’ve been hiding?”

“We’ve been found, so there’s no point in staying on the other island.” He clicked his tongue. “Butler Lee prepared our lodging, so I’m staying here. This castle is so damn big and has way too many rooms. I’ll never understand why rich people need so much space.”

Angel then turned to her. “Need help getting up?”

“No.” Penny closed her eyes. “I’m lying here to think about some things… like who to lay off when we get back.”

“Hey, that’s an abuse of power!” Angel yelled, but Penny didn’t respond.

“Fine, I’m heading back to my room. Don’t stay out here too long, or you’ll be a feast for the mosquitoes.”

With that, Angel waited for a response, but when none came, he simply walked away, leaving her alone.

Meanwhile, Penny remained motionless, listening to the sound of the wind and feeling the chilling night breeze. Slowly, her eyes cracked open.

“Third Brother,” she whispered to herself, her mind now drifting to the unsettling scene she had witnessed. Last night, after seeing what Slater had done and encountering that scene along the way, she found herself questioning everything she thought she knew about him.

“I hope…” she trailed off, pressing her lips into a thin line. “…That he has a good explanation for that.”

Because even if Penny wanted to confront him, a part of her was afraid of what Slater would say. And she was right to feel that way—because the surprises on this trip weren’t over yet. There was still more to come, and she might not be prepared for it.
