Chapter 1198: Hopeless romantic
Their last day on the island was great. Fortunately, for their last night, everything went normally well. Since they all arrived at different times, their return flights were also scheduled at different times. Some of them, like Max, Ginnie, and Lily, were supposed to leave earlier than the others. However, with their friends still on the island, they chose to extend their trip.
As a result, the three of them ended up booking the same flight and were the first to leave the island for the airport.
Seated on a bench while waiting for their boarding gates to open, Max’s brows twitched. He was trying to kill time by reading a book, but he kept rereading the same paragraph, unable to focus due to constant distractions. When he couldn’t take it anymore, he took in a deep breath and huffed.
“What?” Max irritably turned his head to his side, only to see Lily smirking. “If you’re going to ask me to carry your bag, I’m not doing it. I’ve already done plenty.”
Fortunately, Butler Lee was kind enough to send some people to take them to the airport. If not for them, Max could already imagine himself unloading Lily’s luggage.
Lily leaned back, arms crossed. “Say, Max… did you fall in love with me on the island?”
“What in the — are you still hungover?” he gasped in disbelief. “Hey, whatever strange thoughts you’re having, you’re completely wrong.”
“Am I?” Lily rubbed her chin as she hummed a long tune. “If not, then why were you so kind to me? I mean, I was obviously taking advantage of your inflated and vulnerable male ego, but you didn’t mind. I thought you’d lash out somehow, but you just carried every shopping bag we had. Isn’t that love?”
“That’s called being a gentleman!” he scoffed. “Don’t make it sound weird.”
“Oh…” Her mouth formed an ‘O’ shape as she rocked her head. “Is that so?”
“Geez!”
“Then why do you always look in my direction?” she continued, blinking at him innocently. “Throughout the trip, I always felt someone looking at me. And whenever I tried to check who it was, I always saw you.”
Max scoffed. “Who said I was looking at you?”
“Ohh?” This time, Lily’s smirk stretched even wider as she leaned in closer. “Then… were you looking at Ginnie?”
Max’s breath caught in his throat, his eyes widening. Seeing the mischievous look plastered on Lily’s face, he could only think of one thing:
This woman was truly diabolical. Lily had said all that nonsense just to trap him.
“Non—nonsense!” he laughed nervously, moving away from her. “Lily, have you gone mad? What the hell are you talking about?”
Lily chuckled, keeping her smirk as she leaned back. “Oh, my… Mr. Max is falling, and he is falling hard. People say the more you deny your feelings, the stronger they become.”
“There are no feelings to deny in the first place, so nothing will become stronger! Geez! Why are you like this?” He hissed, looking away but unable to hide the redness creeping up his ears. “It’s too early for this. Why did I even agree to let you rebook my flight? I don’t want to get stuck with this crazy person.”
Lily chuckled to herself, shaking her head as she studied Max’s ears. Surely, men were simple creatures. Although she and Max hadn’t talked much since the reunion party and didn’t usually run in the same circles, they knew each other because of their family status.
Both of them came from wealthy backgrounds — both were only children of very successful parents. But unlike Lily’s parents, she knew that Max’s — especially his father — was stricter. With Lily learning how to take over her family business at her own pace, she also had to familiarize herself with their family’s connections.
Coincidentally, her family had strong ties with Max’s family.
“Well, that’s good to hear if you don’t like Ginnie.” Lily heaved a sigh of relief, making Max arch a brow at her. “I mean, it would be very sad if you did.”
Deep lines appeared between his brows as he blurted out, “And why is that?”
“Huh? You don’t know?” Lily covered her mouth, acting surprised. “Ginnie has been in unrequited love for years.”
“What?”
“She might act tough because she was once bullied as a child, but she’s actually a hopeless romantic,” Lily continued, the corner of her eyes squinting in amusement as she studied his reaction. “Don’t tell anyone, okay? It’s Ginnie’s secret, but she’s been in love with Senior Hugo ever since we were kids.”
Max’s face went blank as he looked at her in surprise. “What did you say?”
“It’s sad. I still remember her baking chocolates and cookies every Valentine’s Day to give to him, but Senior Hugo was very popular in school. So, she always felt discouraged. But even with how much time has passed, she’s still very much in love with him,” she continued, shaking her head while sighing heavily. “I sometimes feel sorry for her, but as the saying goes, time heals and changes the heart. I can only hope that one day, she wakes up without Senior Hugo in her heart. Perhaps, with that, she could finally open her heart to others who would treasure her.”
“…” Max went completely silent for a while before he quietly hissed, “I don’t care about that.”

Looking away, he clicked his tongue. However, his eyes then burned with rage.
‘Hugo Bennet… that good-looking, oblivious idiot!’
‘That fool…’ Max clenched his hands into tight fists, looking up when they heard the announcement that their boarding gate had opened earlier than expected. Without wasting a second, he got up and walked away as if he didn’t have company to think of.
Meanwhile, Lily pursed her lips and got up as well. At the same time, she heard Ginnie.
“Back!” Ginnie was sprinting, reaching Lily just in time. Noticing that Max had already gotten up and walked away so quickly, she furrowed her brows and faced Lily. “What’s up with that guy? Did you press his nerves again?”
“Why would I do that?” Lily giggled, hooking her arm around Ginnie’s. “I just told him that you’re in love with Senior Hugo.”
“Eh? But I never liked Senior Hugo. At least, not in that way.” Ginnie’s nose crinkled as she leaned her head back cautiously. “Why would you tell him that? He might think you’re serious.”
Lily giggled mischievously, covering her lips with her hand. “I hope he thinks I’m serious.”
“Goodness.” Ginnie shook her head. “Well, I don’t think it matters, anyway. I mean, I don’t think he’s the type to spread fake rumors.”
Throwing the thought to the back of her mind, Ginnie moved on without thinking too much about it.
Little did she know, the end of this trip was just the beginning of a very confusing situation. She and Hugo were completely unaware that they were about to be part of a love triangle they didn’t even know existed!
