Chapter 1227: Blame all the men in my generation
Meanwhile…
“Yes, got it. Thanks. Miss Bennet already gave her approval, so let’s proceed to the next course of action.” Grace stopped in front of a private ward, lowering her phone. As soon as she flashed the guards a smile, they moved aside to let her through. With that, Grace casually walked into Chairman Bennet’s ward.
Ever since the scheme for Chairman Bennet’s life emerged, this had become part of Grace’s routine. It wasn’t like she minded. She enjoyed spending time with him, and teasing him had become a great stress reliever. He always reminded her that she could control stress as well. After all, Chairman Bennet was often stressed for no reason or for every reason. This made her think that a person’s reaction to things and stress could be controlled.
“Chairman,” she called softly as she entered, stopping when she saw someone seated across the room. Her eyebrows rose, and her eyes fell on the elegant middle-aged man reading a book with a cup of tea in front of him.
Slowly, Haines slid his eyes toward the corner and met her gaze. “Grace.”
“I didn’t expect you to be here,” she remarked, resuming her steps as she went straight to Chairman Bennet’s bedside. “I see he’s sleeping.”
“He just had his medicine and fell asleep,” said Haines in his usual calm tone. “Does he always sleep after taking medicine?”
Grace smiled. “I guess Penny was right.”
“Hmm?”
“I met Penny earlier today, and Chairman Bennet came up in the conversation,” she shared with a light laugh, fixing the blanket on the chairman’s bed. “She said I should marry into the family so someone would take care of him.”
After all, such basic knowledge about the chairman should be known to the family. However, Haines seemed unaware. Not that Grace blamed them. Chairman Bennet’s behavior and life choices often pushed his family away, leading to irreparable misunderstandings.
Haines chuckled and nodded. “I don’t think that’s a bad idea at all.”
“Haha.”
“Atlas might be a good choice,” he added, giving her a meaningful look. “…or not. That nephew of mine worries everyone with his lack of interest in… all of humanity. Perhaps, Hugo.”
Grace laughed as she walked back to the couch, plopping down. “Atlas Bennet, huh? Are you trying to set me up with your nephews?”
“I’m not setting anyone up,” Haines replied. “I don’t think I’m in the right position to do that. I’m just supporting Penny’s suggestions. It’s up to you to decide.”
“Thank you for the suggestion, but… I don’t think any of your nephews pique my interest.”
“Is that so?” Haines rocked his head slightly, glancing at her. “Good for you, then.”
“I’m more interested in their uncle.”
This time, Haines arched a brow and stared at her, his expression unreadable. After a second, a shallow laugh escaped him as he shook his head.
“Don’t hang out with Penny too much. She’ll give you all sorts of ridiculous ideas, and it’s starting to show.”
“But it was fun.” She shrugged. “The look on her face when I told her she better start practicing calling me ‘aunt’ was priceless.”
“I bet she did make a priceless reaction to that.”
Grace blinked, studying Haines as he slowly placed his book down and reached for his cane. “But I’m not completely joking about it.”
“Haha. Youngsters these days sure have a different sense of humor than we did in my time,” Haines remarked as he stood, leaning on his cane, facing her with a mild smile. “Since you’re here, I’m leaving now. Thank you for looking after the chairman. He likes you, and he rarely likes anyone. We were worried that he was giving you a headache.”
Grace smiled and nodded in response.
With that, Haines turned to leave. As he did, Grace raised an eyebrow when she saw him pick up a paper bag from the chair. She lifted her gaze as he stood near the couch and placed the bag on the side.
“Allison and Charles told me to bring you some food,” he said. “They also thought the chairman might get bored, so I put his favorite snacks in the fridge.”
Haines didn’t linger after delivering his message, carefully making his way to the door. Grace, on the other hand, followed him with her gaze.
“Madam Allison doesn’t know the chairman isn’t in a coma, nor that I’m here to keep him entertained,” she spoke up as he reached for the door, watching him glance back. “I’d appreciate it if you could say it’s from you. No one would mind, I promise.”

A shallow breath escaped Haines as he shook his head. Whatever Penny told this young lady, it was surely another “gift” from her. After all, Haines considered everything Penny gave him—whether ridiculous or sincere—a gift.
He didn’t say another word and averted his gaze from her. Just as he pulled the door slightly open, he stopped again.
“I don’t like spicy food,” she said, making him look in her direction. Grace smiled and fluttered her eyelashes at him. “And I like sunflowers. Telling you in advance, just in case you ever want to send me one.”
“Enough with the jokes now.”
A soft chuckle escaped her. “I’m not joking.”
“Goodness.” Haines shook his head, deciding not to indulge her further. Clearly, Grace had taken a different route today. But as he stepped out, he paused.
“Blame all the men in my generation for not being gentlemen—or even slightly impressive—that my eyes are starting to veer toward older men,” Grace playfully smiled. “Thank you for stopping by again. I’ll let the chairman know about it.”
Haines didn’t respond, nor did he look back as he resumed his steps. This time, he didn’t stop and gently closed the door behind him. Meanwhile, Grace chuckled, shaking her head. When she glanced down at the paper bag, her brows rose.
“I guess I didn’t have to tell him I don’t like spicy food,” she whispered with a smile, seeing that all the dishes were healthy ones. She laughed. “I’m not old yet. I don’t need all these greens.”
