Chapter 1252: Nina’s biological mom is… alive?
“It’s me, Penelope. It’s Mom.”
For a second, Nina’s heart stopped. Before she knew it, she snatched her hand away in surprise. Holding her arm close to her chest, she took a step back. Her eyes darted to the woman’s face. The latter’s features were wrinkled, and the area under her eyes was hollowed—she looked older than most people her age.
“It’s me,” said the elderly woman, her hand pressed across her chest. She took another step forward, making Nina take a step back. “My little Penelope.”
Nina’s heart thudded, and her lips quivered. “No,” she whispered. “I’m not—”
Before Nina could do anything, she turned around and rushed back to the back entrance of her home. But the woman quickly followed and grabbed her arm.
“My daughter, it’s me!” The woman slapped her chest as she desperately said, “I’m your mother! I—”
“No, you’re not,” Nina cut her off, shaking her head. Her breathing was slow and heavy. “I already have two mothers, Allison and Jessa. I don’t need another one, and I’m not Penelope.”
The woman’s eyes shone with regret as her face crumpled. “My daughter, I’m sor—” She stopped when she heard a man’s voice coming from Nina’s home.
“Nina? Hon?”
“Finn,” Nina breathed out, looking back. At the same time, the other woman released her and fled in a hurry. Nina furrowed her brows, watching the old woman pull up her hood while hurrying away.
“Nina.” After another minute, Finn emerged from the back gate and saw her standing there. A shallow sigh of relief escaped him the moment he laid eyes on her. “Goodness. Nina, I thought something happened—”
The rest of his words faded as he grabbed her arm and turned her to face him. Deep lines appeared between his brows as he studied the horror in her eyes.
“Hon? Is everything okay?” he asked, his gaze instinctively searching the direction where she had been staring. When he looked back at her, worry quickly filled his heart. “Hon, what’s wrong? What happened?”
Nina pressed her lips into a thin line, her shaky eyes meeting his. “Finn,” she whispered, gripping his arm and staggering. Her knees felt weak, and her entire body trembled.
“Nina…”
“I think…” she trailed off, her mouth quivering. “… my biological mother is alive.”
“What?”
She looked up at him again, the corners of her eyes turning red, and she breathed out, “What should I do?”

Standing on the balcony, Penny pulled her silk robe around her body, phone in hand.
“What did you say?” Penny arched a brow, glancing at her phone before putting it back to her ear. “What do you mean, you lost her?”
Her lips curled down as she listened to the report from those she had placed around Nina to look after her. According to them, a woman was seen approaching Nina a few hours ago. Although nothing serious or harmful had happened, they found the person suspicious. So, a few of them had followed this mysterious woman, only to somehow lose her.
“They followed her into an old building, but when they entered, she was gone. They searched the area, but she just disappeared into thin air,” said the person on the other end of the line. “I’m sorry, boss.”
Another shallow breath slipped past Penny, but before she could speak, the other person continued.
“Miss Penny, I suggest we keep a closer watch on Miss Nina. That way, nothing like this happens again.”
Penny didn’t answer immediately.
“No,” Penny muttered. “Nina wouldn’t want people following her around, and knowing her, she would only try to get away from your eyes. You’d end up losing sight of her if you do that. For now, keep your distance. If anything suspicious arises, don’t hesitate to reveal your cover.”
“Got it.”
With that, they ended the call abruptly. Penny crossed her arms and tilted her head, deep in thought.

“Is this the same woman… on the island?” she wondered aloud, but based on the scenario described, it seemed unlikely.
Although Penny hadn’t seen the woman on the island, she could tell the woman was quite sophisticated in the way she spoke. Just the tone of her voice suggested a calculating personality. It didn’t seem likely that such a person would idle in a back alley and flee the scene.
“Who could it be?”
“Someone’s troubling you again?” Zoren’s voice suddenly caressed her ears. She looked back at him, only to see him approaching. Zoren casually wrapped his arms around her, resting his chin on her shoulder. “Who is this again?”
A deep sigh slipped past her nostrils as she leaned her head on him. “The people I put to take care of Nina just told me there’s a suspicious individual who approached her tonight.”
“Is she alright?”
“Thankfully.” Penny nodded. “Nothing happened, but they found it odd overall. So, they followed this suspicious woman. Unfortunately, they lost her in an abandoned building.”
“Huh.” Zoren rocked his head. “That’s suspicious, indeed.”
His brow arched slightly as he glanced at her. “I’ll ask my men to investigate.”
“Thanks.” She flashed him a short smile.
“What is it?”
“Nothing. Just worried, that’s all.”
“Nina will be fine,” he reassured her. “Your men and mine are with her. Even if they lost this mysterious woman tonight, that’s the last chance that person will get. They won’t let her slip away next time.”
Slowly, Penny turned her head until she locked eyes with him. She had said it many times, but she was truly grateful to have someone on her side cheering her on. It was a game-changer to have someone she could talk to about her worries, no matter the time of day.
“I’m so lucky…” Penny trailed off as she paused from leaning in closer to him when her phone vibrated. “Uh, wait.”
Checking her phone, her brows furrowed at the sight of Finn’s name on the screen. She glanced at Zoren, who released her slightly to give her space.
“You should answer it,” he said. “I’m sure it’s about what happened tonight.”
Penny pursed her lips and nodded, answering the call without hesitation. But as soon as she heard what Finn had to say at this time of night, her brows knitted deeply.
“What?” Penny gasped. “Nina’s biological mom is… alive?”
