Chapter 1255: Hopefully, kisses will suffice tonight.
Meanwhile…
Finn rested his arms on his legs, holding his phone between his knees. It wasn’t that he didn’t understand Penny. In fact, he did. Penny fought a patient fight. No one knew what she was doing, and to an outsider, it often seemed like she was disregarding everything. But then, once her enemy made their grand move, she would have already countered it—or ruined their plans entirely.
Finn understood that, and he knew Jonathan did too. After all, if Jonathan didn’t, he would have made his second move by now. But instead, Jonathan had gone quiet, going along with Dean’s sadism.
Still Nina’s biological mother?
Just what kind of twisted plan did Jonathan have for Nina? Everyone knew Nina’s mother was dead. Moreover, Jessa Cortez would easily recognize anyone claiming to be Nina’s mother. After all, the only person who truly knew what Nina’s mother looked like was Jessa.
His thoughts halted when he heard footsteps on the stairs. Looking up, Finn immediately stood as soon as he saw Nina’s feet. Much to his surprise, she was already smiling at him.
“I just remembered to store the food away,” she said with a smile. “You should go shower now while I clean the kitchen.”
“…” Worry gleamed in his eyes as he watched her casually walk to the kitchen. With a sigh, he chose to follow her. “Nina, you don’t have to clean the kitchen. I can do it later.”
“It’s alright,” she replied, shaking her head. “I’m alright now, Finn. I was just shocked earlier, but after a long shower and some thinking, I realized there was no need for me to care about it. It’s impossible, right?”
This time, Finn pressed his lips into a thin line. Her reassuring smile only made him worry more. He knew her. Nina always hid her true feelings; she might be direct about what she wanted, but when it came to her worries and pain, she kept them secret.
At one point, he wondered if that was one of the reasons he was drawn to her.
Slowly, Finn walked to her side and took her hand. His brows rose when she looked up and met his gaze.
“Finn, I’m alright,” she repeated with a sigh. “You don’t need to worry about me anymore.”
“How can I not worry when my soon-to-be wife doesn’t seem to trust me?” His frown deepened, but his eyes softened. “Nina, it’s okay if you’re not okay. I’m here.”
Hearing this, Nina pressed her quivering lips together.
“You can hide your worries in front of others, but… you can show me your worst when it’s just the two of us,” he encouraged gently, nodding at her. “I won’t judge. I promise.”
Nina held her breath until her neck turned taut. The corners of her eyes reddened, and a thin layer of tears coated them.
“How is it possible?” she whispered weakly, lowering her head until her forehead rested against his firm chest. “She… died during childbirth. That’s why Penny ended up in Aunt Jessa’s custody.”
It was just impossible for her.
Even so, this was her first time experiencing something like this. Never in her life had someone stopped her and claimed to be her mother. Although Nina had no real emotional attachment to her biological mother—having already been raised by two—this situation stirred unfamiliar emotions within her.
“And to be honest, I don’t even know what to feel,” she continued under her breath. “There were a lot of emotions I felt, but the most distinct one was… fear.”
Slowly, Nina looked up at him, revealing her vulnerability. “I’m scared, Finn. I’m scared that this is real—that she’s been alive all this time. I’m afraid to hear her story and what kind of explanation she has for possibly faking her death.”
“The mere thought that she might change things in my life terrifies me,” she added weakly. “And above all, I’m scared that… I might listen to her, forgive her, and let her into my life—only for her to break it apart.”
Nina was content with her life. She might not have reached all her career goals yet, but she was doing well. She was surrounded by good people, and she had two sets of parents who genuinely cared for her. She had siblings—the Bennets—and then the twins from the Cortez family.
It took her time to accept that not being born a Bennet wasn’t a bad thing. Now, she had both the Bennets and the Cortez family.
She was also engaged to a good man, one who was willing to acknowledge his shortcomings and grow with her. Her life wasn’t perfect, but it was peaceful. And now, this woman—who claimed to be her real mother—had disrupted that peace.
The uncertainty and the unanswered questions terrified her to her core.
Finn slowly pulled her into his embrace, patting her back gently. He didn’t say anything at first, simply listening to the silence that followed.
“She might be telling the truth… or she might not be,” he said quietly. “But… I’ll always be with you. We’ll figure this out together.”
Nina tightened her grip on his back, closing her eyes for a moment. After a while, he released her from his hold and took a small step back. As he did, Nina looked up at him and gave him a small smile.

Finn nodded at her. “We’ll figure it out together,” he repeated, watching her nod in return. As he smiled back, his gaze fell to her lips. He gulped, then met her eyes, only to see her brows rise slightly.
“I will…” he trailed off as he carefully leaned in, tilting his head. “… may I?”
Nina pressed her lips together but didn’t move, allowing him to lean closer. When his breath brushed against her upper lip, she slowly closed her eyes. The kiss was soft and gentle, his hand carefully cupping her jaw. Normally, their kisses were quick—a short peck, or just a little longer.
It was the same tonight… or maybe not.
When Finn pulled back and their eyes met, his mouth parted slightly. Nina pinched the hem of his suit before rising onto her toes, sealing his lips with hers. Wrapping her arms around his neck, she closed her eyes and deepened the kiss.
He obliged.
Holding her hips, Finn moved his mouth, guiding her. At first, she was clumsy—her teeth would occasionally get in the way. But she learned quickly, following his lead, allowing his tongue to guide hers in a slow, intimate dance.
“Breathe,” he whispered against her lips, tapping her hip with his index finger before pulling away and resting his forehead against hers. As their lips parted, they both panted for air. “This is going to end really… badly.”
Nina nodded, grasping his chest. When she looked up at him again and he met her eyes, he exhaled sharply.
“Bad… but the kind of bad I’ve been fantasizing about,” he muttered, leaning in to claim her lips once more. As his kisses grew hungrier, he whispered reassuringly, “Don’t worry. I won’t cross the line… yet.”
Finn wasn’t sure if his words even reached her, but they were a warning he had already given himself. Even so, he kissed her just as hungrily, savoring the moment.
After all, he might respect her beliefs about abstinence before marriage, but he was still just a man.
Living with the woman he wanted more than anything was a challenge—especially when his mind kept giving him silly ideas.
Hopefully, kisses will suffice tonight.
Hopefully.
