Chapter 1304: Just shaken
Never in Nina’s life had she ever received such a twisted gift, and she knew this was not from Finn. But…
“How… did it get in here?”
For a second, her heart stopped as she moved her eyes to the door. Without thinking, Nina jumped from her spot and locked it. Her entire body shook with shock and adrenaline as she rushed to the bedside table where her phone was.
Despite her trembling thumb, she managed to dial the police hotline.
“This is—”
“I need help!” Nina yelled before the call operator could finish. “Please. I think someone got into my house.”
Her eyes scanned the room as she gulped. Out of instinct, she checked the windows. They were locked. As she explained the emergency to the operator, she also checked her wardrobe, just to make sure she was alone. Thankfully, no one was inside.
“Yes,” she breathed out, knees buckling as her strength wavered. “Yes, please. I’m scared.”
“Our officers are already on their way. Please stay on the line. Are you still alone in the room?” the operator asked.
“Yes!” Nina panted. “But I’m not sure if there’s anyone outside.”
“Our officers are close. Can you come downstairs?”
Nina pursed her lips, gripping her phone tighter. She had just told the operator she was scared, yet they were still asking her to leave the room.
What if the person who left that gift was still inside the house?
A whirlwind of thoughts swirled in her mind, and before she knew it, she was tearing up.

The police arrived at Nina’s place quickly. Upon hearing their voices, she mustered the courage to leave her room. She ran—sprinting down the stairs so fast she nearly tripped. Relief flooded her chest when she reached the entrance and bolted outside, straight to the officers.
While some officers checked the house, Nina remained in the small courtyard with a female officer, a blanket draped over her shoulders. She gazed at the entrance, holding her breath, waiting for any sign of trouble inside.
“It’s clear,” an officer finally said as he stepped out. He sighed, looking at Nina with sympathy. “Miss, do you live alone?”
“Yes—I mean, no.” Still shaken, Nina shook her head. “My fiancé lives with me.”
“And where is he now?”
“He’s at the airport picking up his parents,” she replied, doing her best to cooperate.
“Do you have family in the area?”
“No.” Her voice cracked as the weight of everything settled. “I chose to live here because it’s close to my workplace… and it’s cheap.”
The officer nodded, asking a few more questions. Just then, another officer emerged from the house. After a quick conversation, they both turned back to Nina.
“Have you lost any keys to the house?” one officer asked.
“No,” she answered, shaking her head.
“Who else has a key?”
“Me… my fiancé… and maybe the landlord.”
The officers exchanged looks before instructing their team to question neighbors and check for any nearby security cameras.
“Miss Reed,” the first officer continued, “we inspected your home, and aside from the disturbing gift, there were no signs of forced entry. However, we did find that your back door wasn’t properly locked.”

Nina listened, but his voice felt distant. She could barely process his words. Her stomach churned, and stress threatened to overwhelm her.
“Nina!”
A familiar voice snapped her back to reality. She turned to see Penny at the small gate, stopped by another officer.
“Miss Reed, do you know her?”
“Yes.” Nina exhaled, feeling a wave of relief. “She’s my sister.”
At her confirmation, the officer signaled for Penny to be let through. Without hesitation, Penny rushed to Nina’s side, scanning her from head to toe.
Nina, in turn, took in Penny’s face. Penny looked like she had run all the way here, her complexion paler than usual.
“I’m fine,” Nina murmured, squeezing Penny’s hand as if to reassure both of them. “Just… shaken.”
Penny glanced at Nina’s trembling grip. She wasn’t fine. But instead of pressing, Penny kept her composure and turned to the officer.
“I already explained the situation to your sister,” the officer summarized. “There was no sign of forced entry, but the back door was unlocked. We’ll investigate further, but in the meantime, it’s best if she doesn’t stay alone tonight.”
“I’m taking her to my place,” Penny declared, pulling out her cardholder. She handed a calling card to the officer. “If you find anything, please contact me. And thank you for your help.”
“It’s our job,” the officer assured her, pocketing the card.
Since there was nothing else to be done, they helped dispose of the horrifying gift before leaving. No witnesses had seen anyone enter the home, leaving the case at a frustrating standstill.

“What a twisted gift to send someone who’s about to get married,” an officer muttered as they returned to their patrol car. “Whoever did this must have known there weren’t any security cameras around.”
The officer in the driver’s seat shrugged. “Well, considering how cheap the rent is in this area, it’s not surprising there’s little security.”
“It’s a good thing her sister came,” the other officer noted. “I don’t think she’d be able to sleep alone after this. She looked like she was about to faint.”
“Yeah.” The first officer kept his response short as he focused on the road.
A brief silence passed before the passenger officer frowned. “By the way, didn’t Miss Reed’s sister give you a calling card?”
“She did,” the driver said, reaching into his pocket. “Here.”
His partner took it, intending to save the number. But instead of typing it into his phone, he froze.
“What?” The driver glanced over. “Why are you staring at it like that?”
The passenger officer slowly looked up. “Holy fuck.”
“What?”
“That woman…” He exhaled sharply. “She’s the head of Prime Group.”
The car jerked to a stop.
“No way.” The driver snatched the card, scanning it himself. His eyes widened.
Prime Group.
Anyone in law enforcement knew the name. It was a powerful private security firm with government ties. Several officers had left the force to work there—including some of their own colleagues.
But what shocked them more was—
“What the hell is the head of Prime Group’s sister doing in a cheap neighborhood like this?”
