Chapter 1393: You’re still alive because of me
Atlas arched a brow, recognizing the road they were taking. Not long after, the car stopped in front of the gates of the Bennet Mansion.
“I didn’t tell you to drive me home,” he said in his usual monotone, his eyes fixed on the driver’s seat.
Jonathan resisted the urge to roll his eyes as he looked back at the ungrateful man in the backseat. “The first thing you should be asking is how I knew where you live,” he corrected, knowing the impact of this knowledge would be lost if Atlas didn’t even acknowledge it.
But alas…
Atlas was already stepping out before Jonathan could finish his sentence.
“Tsk.” Jonathan clicked his tongue, watching him through the front passenger window. “Isn’t he even curious how I knew where he lived? Or what I’m going to do with this information?”
This information, after all, was a nice ingredient to add in a threat.
His face soured as he watched Atlas approach the gates. The guard opened the smaller entrance for him, and Atlas walked in without hesitation.
“Just look at him,” Jonathan muttered to himself. “Not even sparing a glance back to wonder why I’m still idling here.”
With a huff, Jonathan shook his head, deciding not to dwell on it. After all, Atlas was… well, Atlas. Jonathan would rather deal with Zoren’s madness than Atlas’s infuriating calmness. Somehow, that composed demeanor was even more maddening.
“Great,” he grumbled as he drove away, annoyed at wasting minutes of his life driving Atlas home. “What’s the point of having an assistant if he won’t drive him home?”
As far as Jonathan was concerned, Atlas usually drove himself to work and home. Though there were times when his driver took over—mainly when Atlas had more than three places to be in a day—his focus lately had been on operations at Pierson Corporation rather than outside meetings.
Resting his elbow on the window, Jonathan drove leisurely, taking this time alone to recover from an exhausting day.
Vroom!
He arched a brow as a motorcycle sped past him, only to slow down in front of his car. His eyes studied the vehicle ahead before exhaling faintly. Still, he showed no sign of alarm. Instead, his car drifted into the other lane before veering onto a different route, straying from his original destination.
—
“I thought you left Anteca.”
Jonathan parked in a quiet residential street near a community park. His eyes remained on the windshield, noticing several men standing motionless near another parked car.
A woman in a black dress and veil smirked. “Is there something you’re hiding from me? That you want me out of Anteca?” Her voice was alluring, with an elegant lilt that made it difficult to discern whether she was amused or irritated.
Jonathan let out a short, mocking laugh. “Do you take me for a fool? Whether you’re in Anteca or not, I know you’re always watching. What is there to hide?”
“Pfft—” The woman chuckled before picking up the envelope on her lap and handing it to him.
Raising a brow, Jonathan took it. “What is it this time?”
“For some reason, people are getting too curious… and they’re getting too close.” Her voice was unreadable, neither playful nor serious—somewhere in between. “You’re engaged to a senator’s granddaughter. A man I hope wins the presidential election in the future.”
Jonathan paused for a second, already guessing what she wanted. But without a word, he began untangling the thin strap around the brown envelope, revealing its contents.
“Make her go away,” the woman added, her gaze shifting to the driver’s seat. “She’s becoming too annoying. And for some reason, she’s prying into matters she shouldn’t.”
Jonathan was used to hearing words like these from her. After all, the woman sitting beside him was incredibly dangerous.
He pulled out the papers inside, stopping halfway. The first page contained a profile.
“Are you sure about this?” he asked, still studying the page.
“Am I sure I want her gone? Is that what you’re asking?”
“No.” His eyes turned cold as he finally faced her. Half of her face was obscured by the black veil, but he could feel her sharp gaze on him. “What I’m asking is, are you sure you want to hand this task to me?”

“Do you not believe in yourself anymore, Nathan?”
Jonathan’s jaw tightened. “That’s not it. I just think getting rid of her using your people would be easier. If I do it, I’ll do it my way, and it’ll take time.”
The woman studied him through her veil, the corners of her mouth curving upward. “It would be easy for me, but I can’t help but notice you’ve been… idling. Makes me wonder if you’ve had a change of heart… or if you’re becoming ineffective.”
“A change of heart?” Jonathan let out a low, humorless laugh, shaking his head. He laughed for a full minute before finally lifting his gaze. A glint of madness flickered in his eyes.
“You think I’ve had a change of heart? Haha. I guess you have some hope for me, but… let me break it to you.” His voice dropped to a whisper. “Even in death, I won’t stop until I get everything I want. Not even you can stop me.”
Pleased, the woman smirked. “Very well. I suppose I was worried for nothing.”
“I’m up against very capable, very smart people,” Jonathan mused, his smirk lingering. “But this isn’t a race. They can rush all they want… but there’s only one victor in this. And that’s me.”
His eyes burned with determination and something far more wicked, while the woman observed him from the sidelines.
“Well then.” She nodded. “Get rid of her. I’ll give you a little time, but if you don’t… I’ll send someone else. You know I don’t have your patience.”
She reached for the door but paused, looking back at him. “The Piersons still haven’t discovered the sorcery behind DNA test results, despite their efforts—all thanks to me. And you’re still alive because of me. Don’t forget that.”
With that, she stepped out and made her way to the other parked car. One of her men opened the door, and within a minute, they were gone.
Jonathan, however, remained still. His gaze was blank as his mind drifted elsewhere before he snapped back to reality. Slowly, he looked down at the papers in his hand, staring at the woman now marked for elimination.
“The head of Homeland Security, huh?” he murmured, pulling out a few photographs from the envelope. They were all stolen shots of Mint, revealing she had been tailed for quite some time.
A glint flickered in his eyes as the corner of his mouth curled into a wicked smirk.
“If she needs to die… then she should drop dead.”
