Chapter 1404: Newfound admiration and appreciation for the boss (?)
Meanwhile…
Shawn listened to the metal clanking as he stood beside the entrance of the small jail cell he had been thrown into. As soon as the door opened, the officer stepped aside to let him pass. Shawn lowered his head as he stepped out, facing Yugi, who was standing on the other side.
“Thank you,” Shawn muttered under his breath, unable to meet Yugi’s eyes. “And I’m sorry for bothering you.”
Yugi smirked and gave Shawn a reassuring tap on the shoulder. “It’s alright. I hope you’re okay.”
At that, Shawn finally lifted his gaze and met Yugi’s eyes. He was taller than Yugi, but right now, he felt like breaking down. This was the first time in his life he had been thrown into jail, and he wasn’t even sure why. All he knew was that he had gotten caught up in this mess because of a ring.
Teddy and Hayley sighed in relief as Shawn was finally out. However, they knew their relief was incomplete. They exchanged glances before turning to Yugi.
“Sir,” Teddy called, making Yugi raise a brow at him. “Thank you for helping us, and I apologize that we couldn’t do anything without your intervention.”
Hayley frowned slightly. “But, sir… Miss Miller was also arrested. We’re not sure where she is since Shawn said they were separated when they arrived.”
“Please help her as well,” Teddy added quietly, swallowing his pride. He had realized by now that only Yugi had the influence to make that happen.
Earlier, when they saw Yugi enter the station, they had assumed he was just passing by. But after he disappeared deeper inside, they had taken it upon themselves to try and bail Shawn out. Unfortunately, the officers kept delaying the process, claiming they needed to complete more paperwork.
It wasn’t until Yugi returned that things moved forward. Hayley and Teddy had nearly resorted to begging the officers, but the moment Yugi intervened, they suddenly allowed Shawn’s release. That was when Teddy realized something unsettling—no matter how reasonable their arguments were, in this station, power and influence mattered more than justice.
Besides, both he and Hayley already suspected that Patricia’s arrest had been planned from the start.
Yugi studied the two before flashing a small smile. “You two are kind of cute, you know?” He chuckled at their confused expressions. “Don’t worry about Miss Miller. She’ll be fine.”
He sighed, rubbing the side of his head as if picturing the chaos inside.
“Honestly… I’m more worried that someone else might end up getting detained instead.”
“Huh?” Teddy, Shawn, and Hayley exchanged puzzled glances.
Yugi waved them off. “Anyway, let’s get out of here. I hate the smell of this place.”

Outside the Station
Shawn, Teddy, and Hayley stood awkwardly in the station’s parking lot. They glanced at Yugi, who leaned casually against the bumper of a car as if waiting for something.
“Sir?” Hayley finally mustered the courage to ask. “What exactly are we doing here?”
Yugi cocked his head and smirked, raising his phone to show them the screen.
“I’m waiting for the sign to start calling every lawyer I know,” he joked. “Or, worst case, I’ll pray that the Lieutenant General’s phone still has enough battery to answer a call.”
Deep lines appeared on the trio’s foreheads as they processed his words.
“Lieutenant General?” They exchanged glances, surprised by their “boss’s” connections. Would he really pull strings if Patricia wasn’t released?
A mix of emotions swelled in their chests as they realized just how far Yugi was willing to go. They weren’t even officially hired yet, but he was already taking responsibility for them. Unbeknownst to Yugi, the three looked at him with newfound admiration.
Little did they know, Yugi wasn’t doing this for them—he was doing it for Penny. He wasn’t worried about Patricia staying detained. He was worried that Penny might end up in jail instead.
Looking away from them, Yugi turned his gaze toward the station entrance and sighed.
“I just hope she restrains herself,” he thought. “That nonchalance turning into cold fury when she heard the details of Patricia’s arrest makes me nervous. I already messaged Hugo—I just hope he sees it in time.”
Hugo might not have the money, but he had connections in several government departments. If Yugi was right, then Hugo would be able to help, since Patricia had clearly been arrested for a ridiculous reason.

Just then, Yugi hummed a tune and straightened when he spotted Penny, Grace, and Patricia walking out of the station.
“There they are,” he announced with relief.
At the sound of his voice, Shawn, Teddy, and Hayley turned to look. The moment they saw Patricia, the tension in their bodies melted away. However, this time, Teddy and Shawn also took notice of Penny.
They had seen her the previous day and assumed she had some sort of position in the company. After all, Yugi had simply dismissed her from the interview room when she left to fetch someone to open the bathroom door. Their eyes then fell on Grace, wondering who she was.
“Hey there, Grace!” Yugi called, waving. His usual smile remained, despite the clear irritation on Grace’s face. “Looks like you managed to get Miss Miller out of there.”
Grace let out a heavy sigh. “Those officers and detectives always cross the line. I’ve never left this station without feeling angry.”
Yugi chuckled awkwardly but stopped when he noticed Penny heading straight to the other parking slot and hopping onto her motorbike.
“Hey, Penny, where are you going?” he called.
Penny paused as she adjusted her helmet, considering the question for a moment. “Hospital,” she answered, casting a brief glance at Patricia and then at the other three applicants before looking at Grace and Yugi. “Take these four with us. They also need to get checked.”
With that, she pulled on her helmet and revved up her bike.
“Hospital…?” Patricia, still in shock, furrowed her brows. “I don’t need to get checked.”
Shawn pointed at himself. “I’m perfectly fine, too.”
Yugi sighed, casting the three an apologetic look. By now, he had a pretty good idea of what their future held.
“Just get in the van,” he said, jerking his chin toward the vehicle pulling out of the parking lot alongside a few others. Then, he turned to Grace.
“I’ll drive you instead,” he told her. “So you can start calling whoever she needs after this.”
“God…” Grace pinched the bridge of her nose. She knew Penny well enough to see where this was heading. Penny wasn’t the type to fix a problem. She was the type to get to the bottom of it.
And if there was one thing Penny hated more than anything…
It was people who used their power to twist the law in their favor and inflict harm and frame someone using the law.
Cassandra had just made a serious mistake.
