Chapter 1407: Just this far
“What did you say?” Cassandra frowned, listening intently to the person on the other end of the call. “They want nothing to do with this? Are you kidding me right now? They were already paid to get this job done, and even has advanced payment for all the other things.”
A heavy sigh came through the receiver. “Miss Smith, I already know that, but I warned you about this! It’s dangerous, and if your grandfather hears about it, things will get bad for us!”
“That’s why I hired you, so he wouldn’t know,” she reasoned, displeased with the news. “I want Patricia Miller behind bars. Make it happen. I won’t repeat myself twice. Do you understand?”
“Miss Smith—”
Clack.
Cassandra hung up, uninterested in whatever her lawyer had to say. She’d heard enough, and it only fueled her anger. The officers she bribed to arrest Patricia had been suspended because Penny had gone to the police station herself. Worse, even the Chief of Police had gotten involved. So now, not only the officers were suspended, but they were under investigation. If they were proven for any crime, they wouldn’t be able to work in any government agency or any station.
Cassandra didn’t need details to know that Hugo had likely stepped in — probably to keep his sister out of trouble. Hugo had that kind of connection even if this department was not in his jurisdiction and had no power over it.
“That lucky bitch,” she hissed, grinding her teeth. She hadn’t been keeping tabs on Patricia lately, but had she known Patricia was working for Prime Group, she would’ve warned the officers beforehand. They never would’ve attempted the arrest on Prime Group grounds. Then again, the officers should’ve known that causing a scene right in front of the Prime Group wouldn’t be good. Had only they used their heads.
Did they expect Cassandra to tell them everything?
“I underestimated her,” Cassandra whispered. “Who would’ve thought she’d use Penny as a shield?”
Bitterness flickered in her eyes as she thought of the ever-unpredictable Patricia Miller. She hadn’t expected Patricia to seek refuge within the Prime Group. After all, just because Penny had bought the Millers’ company didn’t mean their relationship had mended.
This was business, and in business, acquisitions like this weren’t uncommon. Given what had happened to Global Prime Logistics, it was clear why the Bennets had made their move.
‘Prime Group… Patricia…’ Cassandra mused. ‘I just have to force Prime Group to cut Patricia loose. Then, she won’t have anywhere to run.’
“…” She arched a brow as a thought crossed her mind. But before she could dwell on it, noises outside the ward caught her attention.
“What’s going on out there?”
Her brows knitted as she stared at the door. A second later, she nearly jumped out of bed when it slammed open. Her eyes widened, her breath hitching as she recognized the person standing in the doorway.
Penelope Bennet.
A chill ran down Cassandra’s spine. For some reason, the sight of Penny reminded her of that small, chubby little girl who had once stormed into the greenhouse and hurled a flowerpot at Ray, fully intending to hurt him.
But this time, instead of a flowerpot, Penny was gripping an IV pole, kicking off its base with her foot.
Cassandra’s gaze flicked downward and her stomach dropped.
Her bodyguards lay unconscious at Penny’s feet.
“Pe—Penny—” Before she could say anything else, Penny’s cold, low voice sliced through the air.
“Tighten your stomach,” Penny stepped inside, spinning the IV pole in her hand. “I don’t have a baseball bat, but I guarantee this is going to hurt just as much.”
“What?” Cassandra’s lips quivered, her body trembling uncontrollably. Panic surged through her as she darted her eyes toward the door.
“Help!”
But there was no one to help her. The only ones standing outside were Patricia, Yugi Cortez, and a few others whom she had never seen before.
“No…” she whispered.
Penny’s footsteps echoed in her ears, each one heavier than the last.
Scrambling upright, Cassandra crawled across the bed, then tumbled over the edge in a desperate attempt to flee. The pain in her casted limb was suddenly forgotten as she scrambled to move.
But Penny simply hopped over the bed.

The next thing Cassandra saw was the glint of the IV pole swinging above her.
“No!!” A scream tore through the room as Cassandra curled into a ball, arms shielding her head, knees drawn to her chest. She braced for the pain, convinced she was about to be beaten senseless.
But instead—
THUD!
The loud crack of metal striking the floor rang out beside her. A faint gust of air brushed against her leg.
For a long second, she didn’t move. Then, after a moment, she cautiously cracked one eye open—only to nearly choke at the sight before her.
Penny was crouched inches away, her piercing gaze locking onto Cassandra’s. One hand gripped the IV pole, the end of it planted firmly beside Cassandra’s figure.
“I let it slide when you approached my sister, just to see where it would go,” Penny breathed, leaning in slightly. “But it seems you’re eager to cross the line you’ve been toeing just to see how far you’d reach before someone reacts.”
She arched her brow. “This far, Cassandra. Just one more step over that line… and I’ll cripple you.”
Her voice dropped lower, each word sharp as a knife. “Stay in your lane, Cassandra. Don’t ever make the mistake of swerving into mine again. I’ll run you over.”
Penny stood, towering over her, while Cassandra sat frozen in place, her complexion ashen. Cassandra’s shoulders trembled as she stared up, eyes wide, lips parted but speechless.
A smirk curled at the corner of Penny’s mouth. She spun the IV pole horizontally, tapping its end against Cassandra’s head.
“Keep that in your damn mind,” she murmured, the tap slow and deliberate, almost like she was mocking her. “Don’t touch my people again. Next time, I’ll show you what real abuse of power looks like.”
Her smirk deepened.
“And your grandfather?” She tilted her head. “He won’t be able to save you. In fact, you know him, don’t you? He’d kill you himself before he let you ruin the reputation he spent decades building.”
