Chapter 1450: She escaped
Teddy, Shawn, Patricia, and Hayley woke up this morning without any thought that they would find their boss under a desk, working. Even in their wildest imagination, they would never have envisioned this.
But it was happening.
Right now, they were staring at Penny, who was crouched under one of the unused desks, surrounded by piles of documents.
“Penny, are you okay?” Patricia asked in disbelief, watching as Penny peeled her eyes away from her laptop. “What are you doing under there?”
“Meditating?” Penny shot back. “Can’t you see I’m hiding?”
“Hiding from who?” Hayley blurted out, only to bite her tongue as she realized how blunt she sounded. Shock had taken over for a second.
Penny ruffled her hair as she thought about it. “Too many to count,” she grumbled before looking at them fiercely. “Whoever it is, if someone comes looking for me—whoever it is—tell them I’m out somewhere.”
The four exchanged blank looks.
“What if it’s someone important?” Teddy asked.
“I don’t care if Satan himself comes knocking, alright?” she snapped. “Tell them I’m busy. Be creative. Do your job. Otherwise, I might forget to sign your paychecks.”
With that, Penny waved her hands at them, shooing them away. “Go, go! You standing here will look suspicious!”
They glanced at each other, still confused but ultimately shrugging. They had no idea what was going on, but since Penny had given them clear instructions, they figured they might as well follow them.
Returning to their posts, they tried to focus on work, though knowing their boss was hiding under a desk made it difficult.
‘I’ve only been here for two days, but… things just keep getting weirder,’ Hayley thought, stealing a glance at Penny’s hiding spot. ‘Is this normal?’
Teddy attempted to concentrate on the document in his hands, but Penny’s presence was distracting. Stealing a glance at the desk, he let out a shallow breath.
‘What is even happening here?’
Meanwhile, Shawn nervously pretended to read, but his thoughts wandered. ‘Is she spying on us? Checking if we’re actually working?’
Patricia, however, had a different reaction. Her face soured as she crossed her arms. “What did she do this time?” she muttered. “She’s always up to something.”
Having known Penny for years, Patricia understood that while Penny wasn’t exactly a magnet for trouble, she was an expert at creating it.
For a few minutes, the office remained silent as they slowly adjusted to the situation. But just when they were finally getting used to Penny’s presence, they noticed someone walking past their office.
All four of them turned as Grace strode toward Penny’s office.
They didn’t know much about Grace except that she was Penny’s personal lawyer. They had seen her during their final interview but never interacted with her directly. Still, when she abruptly stopped at their doorway and turned to face them, they immediately felt the weight of her presence.
“Where’s Penny?” Grace asked, cutting straight to the point. “Your boss. I need to discuss something urgent with her.”
Shawn and Hayley exchanged glances, tempted to tell the truth. After all, Grace was Penny’s legal advisor, and for her to say it was urgent meant it was important. But before they could respond, Teddy spoke first.
“Miss Penelope left about a minute after arriving at her office,” he said, rising from his seat slowly. “I’m afraid we don’t know where she went, but it seemed urgent.”
Grace arched a brow. “She left without taking anyone with her?”
“Apparently,” Teddy sighed. “I think Miss Penelope is still not used to having secretaries.”
“Tsk.” Grace clicked her tongue, narrowing her eyes at them. “You four. If Penny isn’t used to having secretaries, then make her get used to it.”
With that, she turned and walked away, muttering under her breath, “She escaped.”
Grace had only come to scold Penny for her habit of spiking people’s drinks and food. As a friend and her lawyer, she knew Penny would be in deep trouble if she kept up this behavior.

Once Grace disappeared down the hall, Teddy turned back to his colleagues. But before he could speak, Penny peeked out from under the desk.
“Miss Penny,” Teddy called out. “Are you sure you’re just going to let her leave? It sounded urgent.”
Penny’s face scrunched up. “If it’s really urgent, Grace will fix it and call me later.” Then, she smirked and gave Teddy a thumbs-up. “You’re a good liar. Nice work chasing her away.”
With a giggle, she happily sank back under the desk.
Teddy raised a brow before catching himself smiling slightly. Hayley, meanwhile, clicked her tongue in irritation as she puffed her cheeks.
‘Acting all aloof but smiling over a compliment?’ she huffed. ‘This isn’t good. I need to get in her good graces too.’
Silence settled over the office again, with Teddy visibly in a better mood. But just when things started to calm down, another figure stormed past their office.
All four of them instinctively turned their heads, spotting a man in ripped jeans and a t-shirt under a leather jacket.
“Who is that?” Shawn whispered.
Patricia scowled. “That’s her brother,” she muttered. “Her second brother. The one in the military? That’s him.”
Just as she said that, Hugo turned and approached them.
He looked at the group in confusion before asking, “Have you seen Penny?”
“She’s not here,” Patricia replied, feigning disinterest. “She left this morning right after arriving at her office. Seemed urgent.”
Hugo scrunched his nose, staring at Patricia. “Who are you? You look familiar.”
“What?” Patricia gasped, crossing her arms. “What’s that supposed to mean?!”
She had been one of the mini-antagonists in this story for thousands of chapters! How could he not recognize her?!
But instead of answering, Hugo clenched his fist, gritting his teeth. “She really did it this time,” he muttered before looking up at the ceiling.
“Did she really think I wouldn’t be here?!”
With that, he stormed off toward the penthouse, determined to confront Penny.
Little did he know, the person he was searching for was currently giggling mischievously under a desk, having successfully evaded capture once again.
