Chapter 1503: Good work, Nathan.
“Cassandra, do not worry,” said the lawyer across from her. “You won’t be in here for long.”
“For long?” Cassandra repeated. “What does that mean? Am I supposed to stay here tonight?”
“They will have 36 hours to detain you here, but after that, you’ll be walking out,” the lawyer reassured. “Even if they pursue this case, you’ll be free on bail throughout the trial.”
Cassandra couldn’t help but let out a laugh. “Free on bail?”
SLAM!
Cassandra slammed her hand on the desk. “I am innocent. Don’t tell me you don’t believe that?”
“I do, but we have no choice, Miss Smith,” the lawyer sighed heavily, extending his understanding because he knew this wouldn’t be easy for Cassandra. Counting the hours she had been here, his client’s frustrations were very understandable.
“Please, just hang on,” he encouraged. “Do not talk to them without my presence. Once you’re ready, they can ask all the questions they want. Answer the ones you want. If I think one is tricky, I’ll intervene.”
Cassandra pressed her lips into a thin line. The lawyer before her was not her usual lawyer, but someone she was quite familiar with. After all, this man was one of her grandfather’s supporters and had also handled Senator Smith’s affairs.
“What… what did my grandfather say?” she asked. There was nothing she could ask about her situation anymore. It would only disappoint her. “Does he believe me, too?”
“Miss Smith, it’s your grandfather who sent me in here to handle the case. However, because this news broke before reaching him, he has some matters to tend to.”
Cassandra didn’t answer, instead staring at the lawyer.
“Do not worry,” the lawyer nodded reassuringly. “After these 36 hours from the time of your arrest, you will go home.”
Still no answer.
Cassandra lowered her head, feeling a little more exhausted after hours of being in this small and suffocating room. However, even the thought of the outside world didn’t offer her any relief.
Her lawyer kept talking, but the more he did, the more distant his voice seemed. Before she knew it, two detectives were seated across from her, asking her questions—questions she had no idea about.

In the other room…
“What?” Kiara’s mouth fell open as she looked at the person seated across from her.
After rushing to the station, she had been told that she couldn’t see Cassandra at the moment. Only her lawyer was allowed to see her. But just as she was losing hope, an officer approached her. He took her to this room, only to make the most ridiculous request she had ever heard.
“Miss Kiara, I’m sure this case is surprising. It’s a huge case that involves many lives — children,” the officer said, looking at Kiara sincerely. “You are Miss Smith’s closest friend. If she is innocent, then the more reason you should help her.”
He paused, studying the look on Kiara’s face. “If Miss Smith is truly innocent, then you should help us convince her to tell us the truth. Convince her to tell who was the true mastermind behind this operation. If you can convince her, her sentence might be reduced with her cooperation.”
“But Cassy didn’t do that. I’m sure of it,” Kiara returned with certainty. “She’s not that kind of person, detective.”
“That’s what most people say, Miss Kiara,” he replied. “But not all the people we think are friends tell us everything.”
Kiara frowned and rose from her seat. “Cassandra is not that kind of person. She might not be perfect, but she would never do something like this. If this is the reason you brought me here and not to see her, then I’m leaving.”
With that, Kiara marched toward the door. But just as she reached for the knob, the officer placed his hand on the door to stop her.
“What?” Kiara looked up at him sharply. “Don’t tell me I’m not allowed to leave, too?”
“No, you may leave anytime you want,” he said, looking at her sincerely. “Miss Kiara, I know you’re a good person and a good friend. However, please reconsider. If you change your mind, you may always contact me.”
Kiara glanced down at the card he was handing her. However, she only scoffed at him and ignored it, yanking the door open and walking out.
When Kiara stepped outside the station, she slowed down and gazed at the media camped right outside. Her hands slowly balled into tight fists until her trimmed nails nearly dug into her palms.

‘Cassandra would never do such a thing,’ she thought, clenching her teeth. ‘Yet, all these people…’
Those detectives included, were already persecuting her friend.
It was nauseating.
Kiara turned away with a heavy heart, looking at the station one last time. Her eyes stung with worry, and she wiped them with her arm.
“Cassy, just hold on for a bit,” she whispered. “This will all end.”
Having no power to see her friend right now, with the law intervening, filled her heart with helplessness. She could already imagine the worst her friend was going through. Yet, there was nothing she could do but wipe her tears and pray for her.
All Kiara could do at the moment was hope this would be over as soon as possible.
In her heart, she believed it would be over soon.
Soon.
But somehow, another part of her heart couldn’t find comfort in that thought. Because even though the law wasn’t Kiara’s specialty, she was very familiar with it—especially the law in Anteca, with her family owning one of the biggest law firms in the country.
In other words, from the bottom of her heart, Kiara knew this would be a long and exhausting battle.

Later that evening…
Jonathan was seated in the one-seater chair of his villa’s living room, watching the news on television as if it was quite a comedy. The news was still covering the progress of the case filed against Cassandra and some of the news anchors’ opinions on the matter.
After all, Senator Smith had already held a press conference earlier that day, claiming this was a political attack aimed at stopping his campaign.
The corner of Jonathan’s mouth curled into a smirk. “Well, will you look at that,” he chuckled, raising his wineglass to his lips. As he took a sip, he glanced down at his phone, which displayed an incoming call.
He leisurely reached for it and answered. Before he could even speak, a woman’s voice was heard.
“I’m impressed,” she said. “Good work, Nathan.”
