Chapter 1555: I will talk

Stephen should’ve known when Hugo told him a new driver came to fill in. It had already happened, not just once in the past. However, a part of his mind wanted to deny it. After all, he still wanted to cling to the slightest bit of hope that those people who put his son in jail had forgotten about it.

After all, Stephen had already made peace with the fact that his only son was imprisoned.

He still had his wife and daughter, who were enjoying all the peace in the world under his protection. And Stephen wanted to keep it that way. He could only wish that Sven, who had found a way to the Lord, would continue to reflect on his actions.

“Though so.”

Hugo studied his uncle’s red face for a moment, then shifted his attention to the person he had just tossed on the ground. His foot tapped on the floor as he stared at the person, who barely had a bruise on his cheek.

“Should I…” he trailed off, frowning as he cast Stephen another look. “Uncle, you’re distracting me. Just go back to the car.”

Stephen’s breath hitched, his thoughts running and then blanking out. “Huh?”

“I’m going to beat the hell out of him if he doesn’t give me what I want,” Hugo explained. “And I don’t think you’d want to see that.”

“…” Stephen held his breath, his fingers digging into his palms. “I am not… going.”

“Why?”

Stephen clenched his teeth and then glared at the guy who was tied up. “I want to hear his reason.”

“Gosh…” Hugo shook his head, trying not to judge his uncle, but his face betrayed him even without words. “Whatever. Don’t blame me if you won’t be able to sleep at night after this.”

“I haven’t been sleeping well since all of this began,” Stephen breathed out. “And watching him getting beaten up is not going to be the first.”

Just like the driver, who had reported to his boss that “nothing was amiss” that time, only for Stephen to meet someone and tell them that he had actually “baited” Charles, was beaten, and perhaps, killed. Stephen didn’t stay to watch the execution, but he knew deep in his bones that those people had killed the driver.

Hugo didn’t respond anymore, rocking his head in understanding. He no longer focused on Stephen and set his attention on the guy on the floor.

“Let’s make this quick, alright?” He remarked casually, as if it were another Thursday for him. “Tell me. Will you give me what I want? Or should I break all your teeth first and talk without them?”

He paused and raised his brows. “Cutting your tongue is also an option since you don’t want to use it anyway.”

The guy on the ground shook his head in horror. His breathing was ragged and short, as if he were almost losing his oxygen. Considering the rope tied around his wrists, feet, and across his chest, his breathing was constricted.

Beads of sweat formed on his forehead, and he gulped. He made muffled noises through the cloth tied around his mouth.

“Uhh… ugh…”

Stephen darted his eyes between Hugo and the man. “Should I kick him? He doesn’t want to talk!”

Hugo’s face twitched, casting Stephen a look. This was why Hugo liked working alone.

“Uncle, what he’s saying is that he will talk,” he clarified.

“But he was shaking his head!”

“It means he doesn’t want me to do that,” Hugo explained, sighing in defeat as he pushed himself up. He then walked over to their hostage, pinning him by the shoulder until the man was lying on his stomach, then swiftly untied the cloth that was stopping the person from talking.

“After fighting for all these years, one of the things I’ve learned is that not everyone is as loyal as they claim,” Hugo muttered, grabbing the man’s shoulder as he pulled him up so the man would sit. Crouching in front of their hostage, he smiled.

“In front of death, even some soldiers would try to flee, even if it means throwing away everything they think they believed in. Life, after all, just feels too precious to lose in those moments, even for a cause,” he added, slapping the guy mildly. “Am I right?”

The man panted, feeling the soreness at the corner of his mouth. He then glared at Hugo, who was ironically smiling so innocently at the situation.

“I’m not…” the man trailed off, clenching his teeth as he shook his head. “I’m just a foot soldier, alright? I just take orders from my boss’s boss! I don’t know anything. All I know is that—”

Before he could even finish, Hugo grabbed his collar and pulled him abruptly.

Unlike the slightly innocent smile Hugo carried, his unsmiling face appeared more like a beast preying on its prey. The side of his face darkened as he lowered his head, his face close enough to feel the tension that was radiating from him.

“You know me,” Hugo breathed out. “That alone tells me you know more than that.”

The man’s breath hitched once more until his neck turned taut, unable to blink under his gaze. His body trembled a little as his stomach turned—not out of disgust, but out of fear.

‘This guy… he’s going to kill me tonight,’ were the words that crossed the man’s mind while staring at that pair of sharp eyes. ‘He will kill me if I don’t talk.’

The man was surrounded by not just a violent environment, but people who were more wicked than the last one. Therefore, he knew that the most vicious of all weren’t those who were loud or would brag about their violence. It was the people who were able to keep calm, even in the most chaotic situations.

And this?

Hugo wasn’t even mocking the man or simply trying to scare him for the fun of it. He wanted one thing. So, it was either he got it, or he would put the man in a drum of cement and roll him off into the ocean.

“I… I will… talk about everything I know,” he stuttered under his breath, his entire body shaking as if all of his strength — even his reserved strength — slowly drained along with his hope.

‘This…’ Stephen, on the other hand, gulped as he cautiously took a step back. ‘I forgot the nephew I was scolding is not just any soldier, but the most vicious one.’
