Chapter 1622: She might really become my sister-in-law.
There was only one reason Patricia had rushed to finish her job—and that was to continue “spying” on their new maid. She had already gotten a photo from Penny the day before, and while there was a resemblance, something didn’t quite match.
For instance, the maid had a mole on her upper cheek. But in the photo, there was none.
It was one of those cases where they “looked alike,” but not exactly. And since the photo showed a younger version, it was hard to make a quick judgment.
Patricia wanted to be sure—extra sure. Which was why she was now parked outside a grocery store with Hayley.
“Uh…” Hayley, who was behind the wheel, glanced at Patricia in the passenger seat. “Patty? What are we doing?”
“Shh!” Patricia narrowed her eyes, lowering her head a little as she peered over the windshield. “We’re following our maid.”
“Your maid?” Hayley tilted her head. “Why? What did she do? Did she steal something? Are you suspecting her of smuggling your groceries?”
“No.” Still watching their family van parked not far from them, Patricia observed the maid stepping out of it.
“Then why?”
Patricia didn’t answer, leaving Hayley blinking in confusion.
“Pat—”
“If you want a date with my brother, just shut up first, Hayley.”
Hayley immediately zipped her mouth shut and ducked behind the wheel, peeking over the dashboard.
“What are we supposed to do here? Just watch her?” she asked.
“Uh-huh,” Patricia confirmed.
“Got it, sis.”
The two of them sat in silence, watching as the maid walked into the grocery store. Once she was out of sight, they both straightened in their seats.
“She’s gone,” Patricia remarked with a sigh.
“Are we going to leave now?”
This time, Patricia turned to Hayley. “Hayley, can’t you see I’m on a delicate mission? How can I just leave my target?”
“If you’re playing spy, you shouldn’t leave her out of your sight at all,” Hayley said with a shrug. “I’m on your side.”
Patricia furrowed her brows, nodding in realization. “You’re right. I can’t just wait for her here.”
“See?” Hayley smirked. “Don’t forget—a date with Theo Miller.”
With that, the two of them jumped out of the car, skillfully evading the family driver. Inside the grocery store, they darted into the accessory section and threw on some hats and sunglasses, tags still dangling.
Patricia and Hayley may have had different reasons for following the maid, but they were equally committed. Pressing against aisles and hiding behind other shoppers, they tailed her as quietly and “professionally” as they could.
But alas, all they saw was the maid picking out some fruits, eggs, and other ingredients before heading to the self-checkout counter.
There were no shady encounters. Nothing suspicious.
The maid simply bought her groceries, walked back to the Miller family van, and left.

Still hoping for something, Hayley and Patricia followed the van, thinking maybe the driver would stop elsewhere. But alas, the van drove straight home. Now, the two women sat in their own car, parked a few blocks from the Miller residence.
“Patricia, you are a princess,” Hayley breathed in awe, staring at the towering gates of the upscale neighborhood. Slowly, she turned to her friend, wondering how Patricia hadn’t turned out to be a spoiled socialite.
If only she knew it took a beating and a life-or-death experience to knock some sense into her.
“You were born rich,” Hayley said, nodding at her. “Tell me—if I dated your brother, would your mom show up at my doorstep and slap me with at least ten million?”
Patricia ignored her, rubbing her chin as she sat deep in thought. This whole thing had consumed her mind. She thought seeing the maid up close would quench her curiosity, but instead, it only made her more restless.
The differences between the photo and the maid should have been enough to ease her doubts. But something in her brain whispered that it wasn’t over. That she had to be absolutely sure.
“Patricia.” Hayley’s voice pulled her out of her thoughts. “That’s it. Tell me what’s wrong.”
Hayley turned to fully face her. “What’s so intriguing about this maid that you’re starting to obsess over her?”
Patricia pressed her lips together, weighing her options. I promised Penny I wouldn’t tell a single soul.
Even though Hayley was Penny’s assistant, Patricia wouldn’t break that promise. Breaking it would mean breaking Penny’s trust—something Patricia had worked so hard to earn and was still working on. She couldn’t sabotage all that effort.
Still, maybe there was a way to say something without saying everything.
“Well… someone I know had a photo in her home,” Patricia began, crafting a more believable story. “It’s a portrait she doesn’t want anyone to see.”
Hayley arched a brow. “And?”
“The woman in the portrait looks exactly like our maid. But also… not exactly.”
“Like they just resemble each other?”
“Exactly.”
Hayley sighed. “So what? Are you saying this person is looking for her?”
“Not exactly, per se… but he did say the woman in the picture was his mother.”
“Is she?”
“I don’t know. Because the guy already has a mother…” Patricia trailed off, brows furrowing, eyes narrowing.
“What?” Hayley asked. “You look like you just figured something out. What is it?”
Patricia held her breath. A realization hit her like a lightning bolt. Penny had been swapped as a child. Which meant… if the Bennetts hadn’t discovered the baby swap, Penny would’ve grown up with a different mother.
Is that woman… Nina’s mom?
Her lips parted, eyebrows rising in shock.
Hayley frowned, then noticed a figure approaching from Patricia’s side. Her focus shifted. She quickly checked her reflection in the rearview mirror, breath hitching, just before a knock echoed through the silence.
Knock knock.
Patricia snapped out of her thoughts and turned to the window. Recognizing the person outside, she quickly rolled it down.
Theo leaned in.
“Patricia, what are you doing here?” he asked, instinctively glancing at the driver’s seat. His sharp expression softened when he saw it was Hayley and not some random guy.
“Oh, hello there.”
Hayley blushed and smiled, her voice suddenly turning sweet as she replied, “Hey.”
They exchanged smiles, while Patricia glanced between the two, her nose wrinkling in dismay.
She might really become my sister-in-law.
