Chapter 1627: How in the world did you three end up in this situation?
Doubting Penny would rescue the day was justified by both Hayley and Theo. Perhaps, even by Patricia.
Why?
Because if the situation were reversed, they didn’t think they would want to get involved.
This situation wasn’t just about buying a company or hiring assistants. This was a crime, no matter how one twisted the narrative.
Besides, they all knew that Penny wasn’t the hero type. If anything, she might as well be an anti-hero.
Penny had already helped the Miller Company, regardless of how the Millers treated her in the beginning. She also hired Patricia, even when the latter was not qualified. As for Hayley, she had already earned an early mercy by being given a chance for the interview.
What else could they ask of her?
Thus, when Theo opened the door and saw the person standing outside, his knees buckled. His front bravado quickly melted as he sagged against the doorframe.
“Penny,” he whispered. Theo could swear he had never felt so emotional in his life. The corners of his eyes reddened as his breathing grew heavier.
Penny, unfazed by the mix of relief and all sorts of emotions in his eyes, looked at him coldly. “Let me in.”
“…” Theo nodded but had to force himself to stand on his own.
Pushing himself away from the doorframe, he opened the door slightly wider. As soon as Penny walked in, he peeked his head out and checked from left to right. There weren’t any other cars parked on the street—no police mobiles or anything like that.
It slightly put his heart at ease, but not completely.
Closing the door behind them and locking it just to be sure, Theo gazed at Penny’s back.
“Where are they?” Penny glanced back at him, catching the drying blood on the side of his head. “You should get that checked. I’m calling one of my men in here to clean it and maybe stitch it up.”
Theo nodded without protest.
“Where is she?” she asked, not beating around the bush. “The new maid you think you killed.”
His mouth quivered as he answered. “In the bathroom. She’s bleeding, so…”
“Where’s the bathroom?” Unfazed by his clear horror, Penny asked.
Theo pressed his mouth into a thin line, pointing in a direction. Slowly, Penny followed where he was pointing and, without a word, marched toward the door.
At the same time, Patricia and Hayley peeked out from the kitchen. When they didn’t hear any yelling from outside, but rather Theo talking, they tried to listen carefully. The moment they heard Penny’s faint voice, they quickly knew she had come to their rescue.
“Miss Penny…” Hayley whimpered. Now, the tears she had been holding back began to flow freely.
Penny stopped in her steps and glanced at Patricia and Hayley. She briefly studied their reactions, not surprised by it, as they should be scared.
Hitting someone in the head was one thing, but keeping the body in the bathroom? Jail.
“Patricia, fill me in,” Penny continued, not dwelling on their mental state.
As soon as she resumed her steps, Patricia tried to keep herself together and followed Penny. Rushing to Penny, they soon reached the bathroom.
Penny opened the door without a second hesitation, only to be greeted by a small bathroom with a sink, bowl, and some other feminine toiletries. No one was there, although there were clear droplets of blood on the floor.
Her eyes traced the trail until she landed on the bathtub, covered by a shower curtain.
Penny gulped mildly, walking in and then stopping before the bathtub.

In one swift pull of the shower curtain, she was greeted by a body in a fetal position. Blood was everywhere—even handprints, probably because of how she was placed in there.
Behind Penny, Patricia stretched her neck and winced at the sight. Theo and Hayley remained just outside the bathroom, eyeing Penny’s back.
“Is this the one?” Patricia asked quietly, looking at Penny with hope. “Penny, I swear I didn’t mean to hit her in the head. It’s just… I panicked!”
Penny studied the woman’s face, catching the mole on her high cheek. Ignoring Patricia, she bent over and reached out to the mole.
“I know she has a mole, and the woman in the picture didn’t…” Patricia trailed off when Penny plucked the big mole from the woman’s face, leaving her gasping. “It’s fake?!”
She covered her mouth in shock. “It looks so real, though.”
Meanwhile, Penny studied the mole between her thumb, then glanced back at the woman. It was clear as day that the woman they had been searching for was her all along. She might be older than the picture—skinnier and darker—but there was no mistaking it.
Penny straightened her back and turned to Patricia. As soon as she did, she caught Hayley and Theo by the door.
“Miss Penny, do you know her?” Hayley asked. “Patricia is telling the truth. That woman just attacked us.”
Theo nodded. “She smashed a bottle on my head.”
“…” Penny studied the two of them, then looked back at Patricia, who wore the same look as the others.
Her mouth parted, but then she closed it again.
“First of all…” she started, tilting her head to the side. “How in the world did you three end up in this situation?”
The moment those words flew out of her mouth, the three of them zipped their mouths. Penny narrowed her eyes, looking at them suspiciously.
This wasn’t how Penny imagined catching this woman. They weren’t the people she expected to catch her. Although messy, well, it wasn’t that different from how she planned to corner this elusive woman. Still, she was curious.
“Well…” Theo started, clearing his throat. “Hayley and I… had plans to see each other.”
Hayley bit her lip and nodded awkwardly. “But then, we saw Patricia when I picked him up. We ended up following her.”
Patricia lowered her head, looking up at them like a child to adults. “I was following the maid and didn’t know these two had plans of eloping. So, when the maid caught me, there was a slight confrontation, then she tried to hit me. My brother came to my rescue, but this maid is really strong, you know? It took three of us—”
“Just two,” Hayley corrected. “I didn’t help… at least, not in that part.”
“When she was strangling my brother, I just reached for anything in the alley where it all happened.” Patricia continued, her voice growing smaller. “Then, I hit her in the head. I probably hit her a little bit harder that she lost consciousness immediately.”
