Chapter 1669: All thanks to Hugo
Earlier that day…
As the night approached, Kiara and Cassandra bid Grace farewell. They didn’t want to overstay, considering they had spent their entire day in Grace’s home. But as they were walking out of the building, Kiara paused.
“Hmm?” Cassandra hummed, looking at her friend with confusion. “What is it, Ki?”
Kiara pursed her lips before she said softly, “Aren’t we supposed to be careful? Because… you know?”
“…”
Hearing this, both were quiet for a moment. They remained standing just a step out of the building’s entrance. After a second, Cassandra pulled up her hood. It was a good thing she was able to bring Kiara’s hoodie last night.
Kiara watched her friend cover herself, sighing internally. ‘That’s not what I meant… but I guess it’s what’s best for us for now.’
She didn’t like the thought of seeing her friend act like she needed to hide. But with the effect of the ongoing case, they had no choice.
“Do you think someone recognized me?” asked Cassandra, pulling her hood down more until it was almost covering her eyes.
“Nope.” Kiara shook her head. “If they did, they would’ve been taking pictures of you… or something like that, right? You’re not a celebrity, but you’re quite famous nowadays.”
Her bubbly shift in tone and her wide smile made Cassandra wonder if she should laugh or be insulted. But in the end—
“Pfft—” Cassandra stifled a laugh, covering her lips with the back of her hand.
“Hehe.” Kiara smacked her lips, then huffed. “Anyway, we seemed to have forgotten the reason why we witnessed Anteca’s Lieutenant General beg his big brother. Do you think we should go back to my place?”
Cassandra shrugged. “Anywhere is fine, but I’m worried about our safety.”
“Me too…” Kiara pressed her lips into a thin line as she pondered what to do, where to go.
As she was thinking, she suddenly caught a familiar car pulling up from the corner of her eye. Slowly, she turned her head, brows knitting as she saw the window roll down.
Hugo lowered his head and looked at them through the window.
Honk!
Cassandra flinched at the honk, turning her head to see Hugo in front of the building. The lines between their foreheads deepened as they exchanged looks. Despite their confusion, they approached the vehicle.
“What are you still doing?” was his first question as Kiara lowered her head and rested her arms on the open window. He tipped his head, saying, “Get in.”
“Uh.” Kiara blinked and then blinked some more. When Hugo pressed the horn mildly, she clicked her tongue and glared at him. “Fine, we’re getting in.”
With that, Kiara straightened her back and faced Cassandra. “Let’s think about our plan on the way.”
“Mhm.” With that, Kiara reached for the backseat door and opened it. Cassandra offered her a slight smile and got in, and Kiara quickly followed inside.
But as they settled in, Hugo didn’t move.
Kiara lifted her head and looked at the driver’s seat, inevitably catching him looking back through the rearview mirror.
“What?” she asked. “Are we waiting for someone else?”
“Hey…” Hugo frowned, twisting his body as he looked back at them. “Do you think I’m your driver?”
“Huh?”
“I already helped in your warehouse for the food package benefit,” he reasoned in a knowing tone. “I also act as your bodyguard for free. And now, you think you can just make me your driver for free? Slavery! Tyranny!”
Kiara scrunched up her nose in dismay. Hugo went on and on as if he had just memorized a few words synonymous with slavery.

“Fine,” she relented, sighing. “Goodness. Just stop saying I’m a tyrant.”
She reluctantly stepped out and transferred to the front passenger seat. As soon as she sat down, she faced him squarely and huffed heavily.
“I’m sorry, okay? I didn’t mean to treat you like a bodyguard,” she explained, knowing that was her shortcoming, why he was doing a one-man unionizing.
Hugo’s brows shot up before he grinned. “Good! Now, buckle up.”
“Please don’t say it like we’re going on a race,” she mumbled as she put on her seatbelt.
Cassandra observed this from the backseat. She darted her eyes between Kiara and Hugo, who was grinning at her while she put on her seatbelt.
‘Does he… like her?’ she wondered.
Last night, it was clear to her that Hugo was only helping her because of Kiara. She didn’t think much about it, knowing they could’ve been good friends even with just a short amount of time. Kiara, after all, was not hard to get along with.
But watching this, Cassandra couldn’t help but wonder.
‘Or am I just overthinking it?’ she added, leaning back as Hugo readjusted his seat. ‘He doesn’t act that different with others.’
Cassandra shook her head, squeezing herself into the corner of the backseat. She knew thinking about this chemistry was just a distraction she was trying to create for herself.
As their car started moving, Cassandra stared out the window.
For a good minute, the car was filled with silence until Kiara turned to Hugo. Her eyes swirled with curiosity as she asked,
“By the way, where are we going?” She tilted her head a bit. “I didn’t expect that you’d come by today after you dropped us off.”
“I was in a hurry this morning, but that doesn’t mean I forgot about my responsibility,” he explained, eyes on the road. “I found you guys a place that you could stay in the meantime.”
Kiara’s brows rose in surprise. “Really?”
“Mhm.”
“That’s — that’s great!” Kiara quickly looked back at Cassandra. “Cassy, did you hear that?”
Cassandra jolted a bit before meeting Kiara’s eyes again. “Uh… oh, yeah…?”
“Where is it?” Kiara asked, facing Hugo again. “And what are the conditions? Is the security good?”
“…” Hugo didn’t answer immediately, giving her a side-eye at her questions. In a way, he was expecting a different question, but this wasn’t surprising at all.
“Yep!” Hugo cleared his throat, keeping his eyes ahead. “My first brother still won’t lend his place to us, but it’s a good thing my brother-in-law is willing to help.”
Kiara blinked once, then some more. “You have a brother-in-law?”
“Ahh… you didn’t meet one of them this morning, huh?” Hugo rocked his head, then cast her a look. “I do, so you don’t have to worry about your lodging for the time being.”
Kiara’s mouth stretched from ear to ear, intuitively looking back at Cassandra. The latter smiled back, albeit forced.
Even so, their crisis about where to stay was resolved—all thanks to Hugo.
