Chapter 1703: Was he the reason this man had died?

[Continuation of Zoren’s Memory]

The sky was gray, and the clouds were thick. Rain poured onto the ground without restraint, drenching everything it could.

Water dripped from the umbrellas as countless were held up to protect those beneath them. The air was solemn as the mass continued under the pouring rain, all eyes on the priest standing behind the coffin.

The priest’s voice harmonized with the rain, along with a few quiet sobs from the crowd.

Zoren stood under an umbrella, staring emotionlessly at the priest.

“For the family,” the priest paused, nodding at the grieving family. “Please say your farewell.”

The muffled cries that followed grew louder as some people moved closer to the coffin.

A woman, in her sixties, wept as she hugged the coffin. The umbrella that had been protecting her from the rain toppled over, with some of her children holding her shoulders. Even then, her adult children cried behind their sunglasses.

Some of the attendees quietly wiped their eyes at the scene. Others turned away to hide their tears. A few, like Zoren, remained stoic.

It was as if the cries, the weight of grief, and the loss were nothing to him.

He just stared at the grieving family before shifting his eyes to the portrait being held on the side of the coffin.

It was the man he had called not long ago.

The man whom he had asked to pick up Penny’s case.

But on the day this man was going to take over the case, he tragically had a heart attack.

A heart attack.

With his age and unhealthy lifestyle, this man should’ve seen it coming. He smoked a lot, ate recklessly without regard for his aging body, and drank regularly. Had it not been for the fact that he was the best of the best lawyers in Anteca, this man would be just any guy who lived recklessly.

‘Is it really just a coincidence?’ Zoren wondered to himself, staring at the portrait. ‘Did you really drive yourself to your own death or… did I do it?’

He didn’t show any reaction, but somewhere at the back of his head, a curiosity lingered.

Was he the reason this man had died?

Or was it because of the man’s reckless lifestyle?

After all, it seemed like too much of a coincidence that a high-profile defense lawyer like him, finally taking a case as big as Penelope Bennet’s, would suddenly die. Not before or after, but exactly on the same day he was going to visit Penny to propose his strategy to her.

Zoren stayed throughout the funeral, but didn’t wait until they finished burying the coffin. Instead, he left when they brought the coffin down, barely approaching one of the deceased’s sons to express his condolences.

—

As soon as Zoren got into the car, he straightened his back.

The front passenger seat opened. Mark got in and looked back to check on his boss.

“Sir, do you want to make a stop somewhere?” Mark asked.

Zoren didn’t answer. Instead, he turned his head and looked out the window. From there, he could see the people still around the grave. He could almost hear the wife’s wailing.

“No,” he said, peeling his eyes from the scene and meeting Mark’s gaze. “Let’s go.”

“Yes, sir.”

With that, their vehicle, along with the escort cars, started moving away from the cemetery.

Zoren stayed idle in the back seat, eyes on the window. With how heavy the rain was, moisture started to build on the inside of the windows. The side of the road appeared a little foggy as well.

“Mark.”

After a long silence, Zoren’s voice was finally heard. Mark intuitively looked back at him.

“Yes, sir?”

Keeping his eyes on the moist window, Zoren asked, “Is it possible to induce a heart attack and not have it traced?”

“I am not the expert, sir. However, I can ask a professional.”

“Don’t bother asking a professional,” Zoren said, his eyes still stuck on the vague scenery outside. “I’d rather you ask the people who would do such a thing.”

Mark knitted his brows, understanding Zoren’s suggestion. Asking a doctor or any other medical professional wasn’t necessary. After all, they wouldn’t induce a heart attack to kill someone. But rather, Zoren wanted him to investigate and gather information on those who worked in the shadows.

“Yes, sir.” Mark lowered his head and didn’t ask any other questions.

When he lifted his eyes, Zoren was still looking out the window. Like usual, his expression was unreadable, making one wonder what was going through his head.

—

Mark was good at getting information, considering his network was vast. Therefore, the results of Zoren’s request came just hours later.

Standing in front of Zoren’s desk in the CEO’s office at Pierson Corporation, Mark’s expression was solemn.

Zoren, who was still in the middle of signing a document, paused. His eyes moved to the folder placed on his desk before lifting his gaze to meet Mark’s. He arched a brow, straightening his back.

“Did you find it?” he asked, and Mark nodded.

“There is a drug in the market that, when ingested, can kill through a heart attack,” Mark reported. “It’s a poison—a fast-acting one at that.”

Zoren rocked his head, not even showing the slightest surprise. “I see.”

“That’s not all, sir,” Mark added, this time piquing Zoren’s interest. “This poison is untraceable once the person is dead.”

“Untraceable?”

“According to the reports I gathered and the ones the Head of Homeland Security let me in on, this drug can induce a heart attack, but it wouldn’t kill the person immediately. This drug will put the victim into a coma, where the drug will slowly withdraw from the victim’s system.”

He paused. “And once it’s withdrawn, the heart stops beating. Hence, its high price in the underground.”

“Huh,” Zoren leaned back. “That’s interesting. Does that mean I can’t check if he died because of this drug?”

The lawyer, after all, had a heart attack on his way to prison. Meaning, he ended up crashing his vehicle with him in it.

“We can try, but I don’t think his family will agree.”

“Did they really need to know?”

Mark watched Zoren tilt his head to the side, as if he didn’t know the family he had just given condolences to. But this kind of logic was normal for Zoren. He might say he pitied someone, but in reality, he didn’t—not a bit.

“I’ll report again once it’s finished.” Mark lowered his head while Zoren kept his eyes on him, watching as he walked away.

Even when the door closed, Zoren kept his eyes on it.

“A poison like that, huh?” he hummed. “How interesting.”
