Chapter 1704: He wouldn’t let anyone—even the law—tell him otherwise.
Exhuming a newly buried body just to quench curiosity was something Zoren would do even without the grieving family’s consent. That didn’t matter, though. What mattered to him was knowing whether he had put the man to death or if it was pure coincidence.
Another night came, and Zoren idled on the balcony of his room. He stared out, watching the black panther run around the vast lot surrounding the residence.
On the small round table before him was a half-filled bottle of wine and an untouched wine glass. In his hand, meanwhile, were the lab reports about the tests done on the body. There was a high possibility that they could no longer trace the poison in the lawyer’s system, but he hoped they could. After all, the man had a heart attack and crashed, dying even before he could be put into a coma.
The tests had been done not long after the funeral.
Unless the poison left the human body’s system fast, the results would be nothing.
But it wasn’t like that.
Zoren read the lab reports again, his eyes focusing on just one part: positive.
“Does this mean if the person who ingested it dies instantly, the poison will leave traces?” he whispered to himself, rocking his head as he thought about it. “Putting the victim into a coma still keeps him functioning. Hence, I assume it’s how the poison leaves their bodies.”
It was a mere theory he came up with since he had been thinking about it since he first heard of it. Perhaps Mint, with this added information, was also coming up with the same theory. Zoren heard she had been investigating it, but she often reached a dead end.
“That means…” he trailed off, putting down the document and then picking up the wineglass. When he leaned back, he swirled the wine and stared at it. “… I did put him on death row?”
He stared at the wineglass blankly, wondering what he should feel at this moment. Someone as brilliant as that lawyer had died because of his orders. And yet, he couldn’t feel anything at all. Not guilt, not shame, not even pity.
He waited for any strong emotion to come, but none came.
After a second, he chugged a mouthful of wine. Cocking his head back, he swallowed it in one go, eyes closed.
“Hah…” he breathed out, reopening his eyes as heat immediately lined down his throat.
He gazed down at the documents once again and let out a shallow breath. “Penelope Bennet,” he whispered. “She’s the reason, huh?”
Or was he wrong?
Was the lawyer targeted because of something else? After all, the lawyer had quite a reputation as a defense lawyer. He might be the best, but also, the people he had defended were all morally gray. So, that was something to consider.
Zoren idled for a while until he finally decided to pick up the reports and walk back to his room. But instead of going to sleep or resting on the bed, he sat on the couch. He tossed the reports aside and picked up the remote control, turning on the television to watch some news from earlier that day.
He chose one news item in particular: the discussion about Penny’s case.
The last news he watched about her was also the first one where she was begging while being escorted into the station. And right now, these so-called experts and news anchors were discussing the rejection of her bail and where she was going to be held until her trial started.
“…” He blinked ever so slowly. “Boring.”
Yet, he watched the boring discussion and how they were all making such unnecessary comments. From one’s perspective, one might think they were simply having this discussion so the public could understand the case. But from Zoren’s perspective, it sounded like these so-called experts and even the people asking questions were doing something else.
“They are shifting public opinion,” he noticed, now the boredom in his eyes was peeking through. “And they’re doing it quite… in an interesting way.”
It had been a while since he found something this interesting.
Changing public opinion was very easy, but sometimes, it was done so boldly. This, however, was a different approach, one he hadn’t seen in a while. And thus, he found it very interesting to watch.
“There’s someone in this case that wants it to end the way they want it,” he whispered, narrowing his eyes.
Having his lawyer die because Zoren asked him to take Penny’s case was one thing. Of course, Zoren was already planning to get to the bottom of that. After all, he might not care about the bereaved family, but this lawyer was one of his people.
His intention might be different, but it would still get the lawyer justice.
The only thing was that now, it was clear to him what was at play behind this.

A person who could purchase such a costly poison to end the lawyer who could change Penny’s case, and also, someone who could manipulate the media to change public opinion. After all, Penny’s begging somehow touched other people’s hearts. By airing this, it could change a few minds and hearts because that was what this discussion was for.
Zoren tapped his fingertips against the armrest, not listening to the discussion on the television anymore. His mind slowly drifted to his own thoughts, stuck in a loop of Penelope Bennet, the deceased lawyer who had declared to take the case, and this lethal drug.
“…” After a second, his brow arched. “What was she doing for a living again?”
He tried recalling it as he had Penny’s file with him, only to realize he had simply read through the first few pages. After that, he had simply called the lawyer, who had recently died.
Just one question after all these mundane days: What does Penny do for a living? This question compelled Zoren to read thousands of reports all about this case.
Just that one question led him to another, and then another, and another, until one question rose at the back of his head.
Who was trying to put Penny on death row?
The trial had not yet started, but this case was huge, and with everything at play, he could already see the final verdict.
A death sentence.
And Zoren had no plans on letting it happen for one simple reason: what he believed was what mattered to him. He wouldn’t let anyone—even the law—tell him otherwise.
